How are your prospects looking? Should we believe that healthcare is booming?
I graduated in May 2011 and I had a job lined up in mid-February at one of the newer hospitals in the area. What I suggest is if you can do it work at a hospital doing something while you are in nursing school. I worked as a Pharmacy Technician at a hospital in the system I am going to get a job with. I applied internally and got my dream job. Cardiac step-down unit, full time night shift. It is not the facility I worked at but one of the smaller sister hospitals as I worked on the main hospital campus. But that is the best thing I could have ever done for myself. It is a LOT easier to get hired internally then externally. Out of my class of 90 something I was the only one in mid-February who could say they already had a job.
good job on getting those jobs lined up! i recently graduated and got only one call back even though my app and resume have been out one week so far. this job was for a rn position at a ltc-post-acute unit, but i would only have one cna and they expect me to take 10 pts a day with no lpn or other cna on the floor. the pay is great because they want to hire one rn to do the work of 2! not safe!!! kansas really needs to adopt the whole nurse to patient ratio so people can be taken better care of. i really wanted a job too! ugh. :grn:
i graduated in 2010, took me 9 month to finally land a job in ltc sub-acute unit for night shift. i have 34 beds on my floor, usually with 29-31 pts. at night there is only 1 rn (me) and 3 cnas. got 7 days orientation, but the previous night rn was too busy running around to really orient me. i have 24:00, 04:00 and 6:00 med pass which takes half of my shift and the call lights never stop at night!!! these pt came right out of hospital post surgeries and procedures. they were on a lot of prn pain meded and needs more care. the facility still use paper chart with mostly hand written order on mar - genetic names and trade names were used interchangeably. only working there for 6 weeks (including orientation) and already 5 incident reports for patient injuries and falls. never took my breaks, always stayed late to finish. management also don't like it when you stay late, because they have to pay overtime, you get a nasty email about the importance of time management. others working there for years told me it is normal. i am turned-in my resignation last week. i can not keep the pt safe with the workload, and i am risking my license. no wonder the facility can never keep night nurse for longer than 6 month. the previous night nurse stayed for 5 month, but she has years of experiences in ltc; the one before her quit after 1 month.
i should also mention that i received a job offer for residency program at a major hospital 2 days after i turn-in my resignation letter. sometime things work out perfectly.
I finally resigned into applying at my home hospital where I did clinicals at. I would have been thrilled if the hospital one mile from my house would have called for an interview, but they did not, and the NM said wait through the end of the week because they were so understaffed and with a full-house that even the NM was at bedside. Hello, why take 3 interviewes to hire then? The system as any other has flaws. My home hospital is 100 miles round trip from home, but I applied anyways for the Rehab Unit since it's only four 8's and it would be day shift and I'm used to driving that distance anyhow. So fellow RN's....apparently there ain't no nursing shortage in middle America!
I graduated from Excelsior College this May 2011, applied to 3 different hospitals in my area as a graduate nurse. One called me back out of the 3 and I got the job! I was hired as a gradate nurse in June, but I just passed my boards so I will be starting July 5th as a RN :) It's on a med-surg Ortho/Neuro floor.
Graduated in May, sent out 3 apps. I got 2 call backs, interviewed, accepted one of the positions and will start July 5th! Passed boards last week and am really looking forward to starting :) Most people in my class have jobs now. I live in the southern part of VA. Good luck to everyone!!!
I am one of the fortunate ones to have a job line up, contingent of me passing the NCLEX:)
I started applying to new grads internship/residency program back in December, and put out close to 50 applications all over the country. Had three interviews, two out of state and one instate and got offered the job in my state about two weeks before graduation:)
once I passed my NCLEX in July(fingers crossed), I will be set for orientation in August.
All I can say to those who are still looking , is that I'm praying that something will work itself out soon for you:)
