New PCT job and crappy coworkers rant!

Published

So I have been an ICU tech in a level 2 for the past 4 years... recently I started a new job in a much larger well known level 2 ETD as a tech as well....

I work the night shift and the person orienting me has been great! he shows me where everything how the machines work and answers all my questions with no problem...and he knows I have the tech experience so he pretty much just lets me do my thing

But in this ETD not only do they have techs they have NA's... The techs being responsible for EKG's, Blood draws, Urine dips and preg test, Traumas, codes,..... while the NA's are to assigned to a separate holding area of the ETD for pt's admitted but waiting for beds....

But there is one woman tech, and this one aide who seem inseparable and drive me out of my ******* mind...I came in here fully expecting to have to prove myself and get some slack... but damn do these girls take it to another level....

We had a cardiac arrest come in last night... the other tech and myself are setting up the room, getting the cart and everything, and while we are doing that the other tech and aide (both of which who were not assigned to that area) came over saying "wheres this wheres that they have to learn" blahhh blahh blahhh.... (there are multiple new hires)

keep in mind i worked ICU for 4 years and i have worked PLENTY of codes in that time..... i know what I'm doing

So the pt comes in.. other tech continues compressions while I hook them up to the monitor... while I'm doing that I'm listening to to Doc who immediately calls it....So... it's over... But i guess this girl was more worried about what i was doing cause she kept yelling at me to get the damn blood pressure cuff....after the doc called in and RN said dont...

And then we get a trauma(MVA)... now we go in to set up and she's hootin and hollarin about this that and the other thing....I kinda of just ignore her and do what I'm supposed to do.... pt comes, i hook them up to the monitor and then have to draw blood... RN on one side trying, me on the other... pt is cold... I hit the vein but it's running slooowwww.... cops need alcohol level

She pushes me out of the way with her her hips so she can also try (and also fail) to get the blood... Pt's gets warmed up and I get the blood

These two girls are driving me nuts! I can tell they jsut want to make the new girls look stupid.... who show us that they are something special or something....

And don't get me started about the NA trying to tell ME how to hook a pt up to a monitor....PLEASE WOMAN!

I'm just gonna keep doing my job and keep a cool head and ignore them. I know I am good at my job and once everyone sees that they have nothing to say!!

BLAAH!!!

thanks for letting me rant... :-)

Well, unfortunately there are going to be these types almost everywhere....those who think their poo does not smell. They will criticize everyone else and then blame just about anyone else for a mistake that is clearly theirs.

I know you didn't really ask for advice, but here is a bit anyway...I would say to ignore them. If they get in you way of doing your job and they are not in their assigned area, politey (at first, by the 3rd or 4th time, not as politely) inform them that they are in the way and you are not in need of their help here. If they insist on being in the way and butting in on your job, then tell the charge nurse and they should do something about it.

Otherwise, let you work speak for itself. If you do a good job, it will not go unnoticed by the RNs.

Keep doing your thang, girl! Your skills will be noticed by your peers. Take your own advice and ignore Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

It might be difficult at first, but stand your ground.

This is true. I took a lot of guff where I was once employed, including being directly attacked verbally, but I just pretended I didn't hear the remarks, went about my work and when I left the job, I was the ONLY EMPLOYEE who was given a going away party with a bonus check for $375.00 Plus a wonderful letter of recommendation.

The only way ur going to 'win' over them is to stand up for yourself.

If they push you out the way, push back! NOBODY would come & push me out the way if I was in the middle of something. When they push u out the way, that's like saying: we don't need or want u here! Just say excuse me but ur in my way, and continue on doing what ur doing. They will not leave u alone until u show them who's boss and you CAN do ur job.

If u don't do it now, they won't respect u. But if you stand up for urself, I can almost guarantee u that they will back off, at least to a certain degree. They know ur new and see u as weak (u may not be).

I know what I'm talking about, cos as an agency nurse, I've had to stand up 2 other staff numerous times, & they do respect u in the end.

Come bak & let us know how u get on anway. Good luck!
