New nurse making job unbearable!

Published

Well here goes. I have sat on this for a week. I work in a small rural hospital. Many of the staff have worked here for years, some their whole medical career. So as far as new staff coming in, we actually only seem to have new nurses or techs come in a few times a year. When someone does move on it is to take a new a new position elsewhere or retirement.

We had a new grad RN start last jan. She first was in L&D, then ER, and two weeks ago we were told she would be starting in the clinic. I have heard thru the grapevine she has been moved so much because of her inability to get along with staff. And was that rumor on the money!

We have a wonderful LPN, ("Nellie") who has worked for this hospital for 42 years! She is the clinic manager. She is my "go to" for everything. I totally admire her for her nusing knowledge along with my other co-workers. Being the clinic man. it is "Nellies" job to orient the RN to the clinic. In the a.m. before we open to pts., Nellie assigns each of us to a doc or an NP. As assignments are given out Nellie asked new RN to call back first pt. and give allergy shot. New RN looks at "Nellie" and says "I am an RN and you are just an LPN. You give the shots". OMG. Everyone just stood there.....speechless! Nellie had a private chat with her, but nothing has changed. In one week our clinic (we see around 150 patients a day) which is usually a wonderful place to call work, has become a tense, "walk on eggshells", battle zone. RN is constantly finding an LPN to hand off assignments that she feels are beneath her. Her constant comment is "I didn't go to school for 4 years to do this".

PLEASE KNOW THIS IS NOT A LPN VS RN POST. I am looking for ways to handle this personally. I am not someone who deals well with confrontation. So each time she finds me to pass off a pt. etc I just do it to keep the peace.

I know I can't keep doing this. I have almost doubled my pt load during my shift. Everyone says it is a matter of time before she runs out of depts.to be moved to and gets terminated. I think this sad. "Nellie" is trying to guide her in the right direction but she is just as frustrated. :banghead: Everytime I try to get some backbone with her she reminds me she is the RN!

I just don't understand where these people are coming from. In my last facility, we ALL worked together. One day the NHA and I were shampooing the carpets. I helped when we cleaned out the garage of older beds, walkers, furniture, and other equipment and loaded it on a truck for charity to a third world country. two days after my new NHA started, a dietary aide came to the kitchen and stated the evening cook had not showed up (dietary manager was off d/t a funeral). NHA was mortified on what to do. I went to the kitchen, got out the evening menu, followed it and made the meal for 65 residents.

Even though we all went to school to receive our degrees and passed our boards does not mean there is ANYTHING that is beneath us. We need to all work together for the better good of those we care for.

If you have to do her job, you should be getting her paycheck.

We had our meeting today. The DON, Nellie, two other nurses from the clinic and myself. Seems like things have only got worse this week and EVERYONE, including our clinic NPs and a PA ,put their 2cents worth in about new RN! Yesterday, she told a patient, "Don't get your panties in a wad". Jeez!

In the meeting we each expressed our concerns. No one raised their voice. We all remained calm, but we each let RN know that her days of playing Princess RN were over. The DON asked her a few questions.

"Why do you feel you are above (you name it, she does)....."blah, blah.

New RN began an absolute tirade about how she has been forced to do scut work since she started at our hospital in jan. and the last hospital she worked at treated her in the same way! The DON quickly retorted, "I was under the impression this was your first nursing job since graduation." New RN, stated she would not be treated this way, said she quit, and stormed out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I SO BADLY WANTED TO QUIP,

"DON'T GET YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD!" LOL

Wow! I guess this was her second job in 6 months. I feel bad for the next hospital that has to deal with her. I have no idea what profession this women should pursue but the nursing world is no place for her. Thanks for all the great posts. If I had not put my frustration on this forum and asked for advice, I would not have asked for the meeting. And she still might be there:bugeyes: You guys are the best!

I don't know how she even made it through nursing school with that attitude. She is a real snob.

Scut work? Like emptying bedpans and feeding patients? I thought we were taught that scut work in school. That's scut work? I don't know how she even made it through nursing school. Anyhow, I guess it's a good thing if she said she quit. I hope the DON doesn't give her a recommendation. And I'm sure the next place she works will be looking into why she's left two jobs in over 6 months.

I wonder what she thought nursing was, I am sure there are many RN's on this board that have done far more than their share of dirty work. Myself, I have cleaned up tables, poured drinks to help out, whatever. This girl will eventually just self destruct. At least she is out of your life.:D

If the new staff can't get along with others management needs to encourage her to use EAP for help with personality issues OR encourage her to pursue new opportunities.

Oops she self referred herself for other opportunities.....Thats what I get for replying without following the thread all the way through...

We'll have no way of knowing, but I'd be willing to bet that the next place she goes will know nothing about the two jobs she's had in six months.

If she can't come up with a good reason to leave them off her resume (she was recovering from the stress of school, maybe) then both facilities will have badly mistreated her.

It's possible that she may get a clue, but not too likely. I too am surprised she made it through school.

She gave herself her own referral?

I hope that she had a piece of everyone's foot up her rear as she walked out. She is a grown woman, and she is well aware of the fact that she was employed in a clinic where nurses (RNs as well as LPNs) administer shots and a host of other things. In fact, the scope of practice is a bit broader for LPNs in clinics than it would be on the floors. You'd have a hard time telling the difference in most cases if you visited mine!

Well good riddance, and I hope that this fool does not float to our end of the woods!
