Here's another soon-to-be newbie. I attend orientation June 19th and begin classes June 30th. Clinicals begin in August. Excited and a bit nervous about just how much my brain can take in at my age...I'm 46.I'm expected to graduate in June 2009 with my 4 children and dear hubby cheering and thanking God in the audience.
I must add that our 12 y.o. son is looking forward to checking out mom's textbooks. He's already asking if I can take him to a hospital to observe an operation...I told him I'd try to work something out.
Congratulations to all of you who are beginning your nursing studies soon! Here's to you:
UPDATE: About 8 weeks into my LVN program in So Cal. Fundamentals was insane! But I survived & passed, by God's grace. Into clinicals, Med-Surg1 & Pharm now. 2.5 days of clinicals, 6:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., and 1.5 days of theory. Most Fridays off...niiiice. Overall, some days are better than others. At the hospital, we're pretty much just doing VS, head-to-toe assessments, and basic patient care (i.e., measuring I&Os, turning, bathing, bedmaking, wiping bottoms, oral care, etc). Haven't yet inserted a Foley or removed one, but it's just a matter of time. I enjoy speaking with my patients if they're up to it. Some are not, but I do what I can to let them know I'm here to help them as best I can. Not passing meds/administering injections yet, but we will be in about 1 month IF our instructor thinks we're ready. (Speaking of meds, I cringe at all the meds some of my pts are on.
) Also, staff nurses at my current clinical site vary. Some are very helpful & appreciative; others make you feel like you're unworthy of their time. Oh well, no surprise there. Welcome to nursing, right?
Oh, and it's true what most LPN/LVN students say on this site: study as much as you can. Secret: Because I'm older, my brain just doesn't retain as much information the first time I hear or read it. I have found that rewriting my notes 1,2,3 times helps me greatly. Also, studying with 1 partner is about all I can take because when there are more, study time is far less productive. Also, if you can afford a PDA with Hippocrates downloaded into it, buy it! They are expensive, but perhaps some of us can afford the expense. Having the PDA helps us during clinicals because sometimes we're told to look up our patient's diagnosis if we aren't familiar with it and having the PDA in your pocket to do that is beneficial. Otherwise, I have to wait until I get home in the evening--when my brain is fried and my feet are sore--to research my pt's condition. Don't like hitting my head on the keyboard because I fall asleep at the computer.
Hope my fellow nursing students are all doing relatively well. 9 months to go for this ol' gal...can't wait. (I'm really looking forward to L&D rotation)
God's blessings to you all!
I finished my first quarter last fall, but had to take a break due to the death of my mother-in-law last November. I hope to start back in Oct '09. We live in a rural area, and the LPN class will not be offered again until then. Best wishes to all of you who will be starting soon!:redbeathe
Hey Vintage Student!! I'm 43 and ya know what? Our brains are still in great shape! I have heard of an elderly woman gone back to college to get her degree at 84!! I wish you all the best. You are so lucky to have your husband's support as I am doing it against my husband's wishes. He wants me to work part time and care for him and our two girls 13 and 17. I say enough's enough. It's Momma's turn. Four kids? My best to you.
