I am starting in September I figured it would be nice to start a thread where all of us new students could come and and share our experiences/help eachother out as we are on our way to be nurses :)
I will be starting January 4th, LPN school, and boy am I ever nervous and excited. I am 49, and have been out of school a lon gtime. I am a mom to five and grandmother to 10. This is was on my goal list for ages. Now that it has come I can't wait to get started!.......
Pray and wish me luck. Hope I can ask you guys lots of questions should I need it. You can ask me too. Support will be needed for all of us I believe.
Happy HOilidays!.....................
Hi JamNurse,
I passed the entrance exam and am now part of the part-time LVN program term 1. We have our first practice for clinicals tomorrow, the saturday after Christmas. I'm looking forward to learning more and I'm not concerned with the social drama of the school. I'm there to learn.
Hi, guys! I have orientation on January 14th and classes start on the 20th. I am already FREAKING out!! I am so nervous & excited! It's been a while since I've been in school, so I am trying to figure out the best way to attack the matieral. I am getting WAY to OCD with the whole situation, I think! I have started watching youtube clinicals and looking up flashcards already..I need to CHILL!!! LOL! :selfbonk:
Congrats.
These classes are like boot camp!
I read my chapters and do the workbooks, then we go over the powerpoints in class, then review the material at night for the test the next day. It is a lot of work learning something and testing on it the next day but at least it is small managable chunks.
If you have your book I would recommend statring to review the medical terms, the prefixes are not bad, the suffixes are a bear.
Good luck and enjoy!
hey guys, i just now found this website. seems cool! i have been applying for both lvn & rn programs for the past 3 years and finally got into the lvn program here at my local jc. although i'm excited about starting lvn school my dream is to be a rn so that i can work emergency. i'm hoping that i'll be able to slip into the rn program at my school. if people drop the rn program they first fill those spots with eligible lvn students...and i'm soooo eligible. regardless i'm just glad that after so long of trying that i'm finally in a program! i start jan 19th...not long now!
just curious, but how much lifting is there in the beginning? i ask because i had shoulder surgery in november and although my orthopedist is going to clear me for school my rom is still limited and i'm still in my sling.

hey,
in response to your question about heavy lifting in the begining, it all depends on how your program is set up. you usually do the most lifting during clinicals, but for example, my program is a whole lot of theory the first level (6 months) and we don't get into clinicals until after the first 4-5 months. some programs alternate theory days with clinical days. just give your jc a call and i'm sure someone can let you know! :)
good luck and have fun!!! let me know how everything is going (i don't start until march and i'm sooo nervous :uhoh21:)...
I'm about to start my 3rd term, halfway through the program. I have evening clinicals this time, which is kind of a bummer. But it's close to home.
Can't decide if i love or hate my school. The important thing is, I'm doing really well and learning a lot. Will be glad to graduate so i can move home.

BlkQueen8,
How is school going, are you liking the instructors and the campus?

I'm from Iowa and go to school at Kirkwood Community College. I just finished my first semester and start back January 11th. I'm looking forward to focusing more next semester as first semester I was touring to a lot of shows all over the US for the Celtic Thunder Street Team and my husband was at ARMY training so I was home alone. I'll be honest: I've said since Junior High that I wanted to be a nurse and now I think I'd rather be in the music industry but this is how the cookie crumbles and with this economy I need to have something to fall back on...nursing it is! I've worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of Iowa since 2007 and LOVE IT!
First semester for me was dealing with disease processes in the elderly and my clincals was in a LTC facility. I'm looking forward to getting OUT OF GERIATRICS this semester and working with PEDS AND OB! Can't wait!
Take Care and Good Luck...those of you just starting ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME BECAUSE ONCE YOU START NURSING SCHOOL THAT'S A SACRIFICE YOU HAVE TO MAKE TO DO WELL. I refused to give up my tour dates and barely passed because I didn't study at all SO WORK HARD EVERYONE AND HAVE AN AWESOME SEMESTER!
