New Grads - where is there a nursing glut?

Hello,

I just wanted to ask those of you in the midst of job hunting whether you believe your area has a nursing shortage (meaning that new grads find hospital jobs easily) or a nursing glut area (new grads are struggling to get hospital or any jobs). Please name the area/state as some of us from nursing glut areas may be considering relocation. Thank you.

I live in NY and the city hospitals want you to have experience first! Its tough to get a GN position

Specializes in med/surg, ER.

I work in Turlock and there are hospitals all around this area, Modesto, Manteca, Merced...I don't know about new grad programs but you can check out http://www.emanuelmedicalcenter.org/working_at_emanuel

they have their job openings posted. In Modesto, there is Doctor's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center. They also have websites you could google. Good Luck!

To December2905, Sierra View in Porterville is currently hiring RN's. They have an online website where you can apply, and sign on bonuses.

I don't know the truth of this, but a recruiter came to our school and told us that Sierra View is really making an effort to provide the nursing staff with nice little perks and a lot of time off. They work 12 hour shifts and you get 8.25 hours personal time on each two-week paycheck. This is of July 2009.

Good luck in your Job Search.

Gad, this is really getting depressing! If the hospitals in NYC are reluctant to hire GNs, you can be pretty sure there's a glut going on in the NY metro area. Well, let's try to think positive...

I was just looking around in the Hawaii nurses forum... don't start fantasizing about getting a nursing job in paradise! Especially if you are a new grad. Darn.

Specializes in med surg.

I find that a percentage of new grads are particular about what they want, no evenings, no night, no weekends, and there salary.

Med surg is not the bane of nursing but rather the backbone of all other specialites, ER nursing basiclly is med surg nurse with a twist. Cardiac nurses must know more then just the heart to be good in CCU/ICU.

Patient to nurse ratios scare people away from Med Surg but you will definitely learn time management and organizational skills when you have 5 patients as opposed to the 2 you have as student nurses.

There are jobs available, you just need to take what is available and live with it for a year if it is a safe environment for you and your patients and then move to the speciality and med surg is a speciality.

Every job I have applied for I state that I can work any shift, any day of the week, including holidays, and I don't even put a desired salary unless it is a required question on the application. Yes, I am particular about the fact that I want to work in pediatrics, but I am not particular about which type of pediatric setting (floor, ICU, ED, psych). I have even applied to some OB, L&D, and ED jobs. I simply don't want to work with adults and I don't think I should have to suffer through a year of doing something I never wanted to do. If there is a so-called nursing shortage, it shouldn't be so difficult for me to find a job. I have been applying in 4 different states, by the way!

please don't give up........as I mentioned I had to go outside of Boston area to find the right hospital position for me. Look into rehab hospitals.....not to be confused with rehab in nursing homes. Rehab hospitals is not a bad place to start and the pay is good. You will find some med-surg type patients since we get a lot of patients who have just had surgery. The hospitals are discharging these patients early and we get them. I get 5/6 patients on the evening shift.

So after you get some experience you can go on to your dream job.....some have where I work but stayed as per diems....

all the best......

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.

I live in SC. I got a job already about 2 weeks after graduation in my hometown hospital. Other new grads from my class had secured jobs as well before we walked across the stage.

Let's see. Drexel had 2 career fairs this last quarter alone. I think they had 2 the previous quarter as well so that's 4 in less than 5 months. There were more recruiters at the first career fair. Less, at the second one and even with that, some of the people who came didn't come to hire, they just came to provide information about their institutions because they currently have no positions. My question was why waste your time coming if you have no positions. They took down names, addresses, phone number with the "we'll call you in future if a position opens up" kinda attitude.

The other 2, one was a lunch kinda thing and the other was dinner, both hosted by two different hospitals. Were they hiring? you tell me.

I've worked in recruiting before (healthcare related, not clinical recruiting however). Some organizations attend a career fair, pass out flyers, take resumes, etc. knowing full well they can't hire that year because they are trying to maintain the relationship. Because next year the hiring freeze will be over. Sorry to say that, but it's true.

Hi,

i am a new grad from the wash dc area (NO GLUT!!!) who moved to Southern CA (Orange County) and i believe there is a HUGE GLUT here. after applying all summer, i gave up and accepted a job in inpatient psych unit. i am discouraged and wonder if i blew it and will never get a medical hospital position. :(

i am a bsn (3.9 gpa!) who did a mid-life career change (from IT). i can't help but wonder if ageism is involved or maybe its just the sour grapes talking :imbar . i just took acls and met some 20 something new grad ASNs who recently got hired. sometimes i wonder if i would have been better off had i earned "B"s instead and worked as a tech. i wanted to keep my grades high becuase i didn't want to close the door to an NP program which were extremely competitive back east. oh well. live and learn.

i have been working with a recruiter and she says ANY experience is better than none. i hope she is right.

has anyone ever taken a job and then begged to other departments for another job??? i wonder what is the minimum number of months to work here without creating bad blood with my current unit???

good luck to all the new grad nurses out there!!!!
