New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand Part 2

World Registration

Published

Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.

Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

Part 1 thread New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand - Nursing for Nurses

good day! i have been following this thread for quite a while now and thought of signing up so that i'd be able to be informed too of the latest updates on ahpra-wa approval. i sent my application in december of 2011 and received an e-mail (final approval) last february 22, 2012. i followed up but they only responded with the usual "[color=#454545]please be advised that your application is still in assessment. "

i have some friends who applied last september and october 2011 and haven't received their loe yet. i'm just wondering if there's anyone who had already received his/her loe this month.

this whole application process is indeed a test of patience for everyone but let's keep our hopes high. god's timing is perfect. =)

hi gaygeekynurse,

a lot of forumers here including me, have not received the loe from ahpra-wa, my receipt date was november 1, 2011, i know of some way back august who have not received theirs too. as per ahpra-wa today, my application is awaiting the decision letter / final approval from nmba-wa. the thing is, the board only meets once a month. that is why i'm conditioning myself for the long haul. you're not alone, there are a lot of us stranded in this boat.

A notarized copy of the board certificate/diploma would suffice

hello everyone!

regarding the Course Description for AHPRA, would having the basic nursing subjects be enough for it? or should i have all the subjects be included ( minor subjects like english, math, chemistry, zoology, speech etc)?

My school only issued the nursing subjects' description :(

also, regarding the vaccinations, plz correct me if i'm wrong:

most schools usually require 2 shots of MMR, 2 shots of varicella, as well as Dtap which is only one shot.. Am i right? thanks everyone!

Hi :) just a question.. do I still need to have 2 shots of MMR and varicella even if I already have a certification from my pedia that I have been given those shots way back?

i might confuse some of the followers of this forum with the enclosed "final approval" email on my first post. what i meant was i received a reply wherein my case officer wrote that my application has been already escalated for final approval.

anyway, how often do you follow up your application? my receipt date was december 12, 2011. and i followed up my application 3x from february 2012 up to now. i keep on receiving the same response that my papers are still in assessment and because of the high volume of applicants, a time frame cannot be guaranteed. "you patience is greatly appreciated" line on their email somehow makes me think that it would really take a while.

how did you know that the board meets only once every month? did ahpra-wa confirm this thorough email?

i am hoping to hear some updates from you once in a while. let's all keep in touch. thank you! god bless us all. =)

yes, most of our applications have been escalated for final approval.

answers to your questions:

i follow up once or twice a month. through email mostly.

we are receiving the same generic email, but if you try to call them, they could give you more details.

they (the board) would usually meet once a month, this is also true in other states, this was confirmed when one of the forumers here called the ahpra office in wa, another one also got an email about it. try to read back 5 pages or so of this thread. i think it was marclouiemarco's post (ahpra-nsw) the minutes of their meeting are usually at posted at ahpra's website.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I guess we all have to wait with a good attitude and fervently pray for God's grace regarding this matter.

Hi Everyone,

I am in my final steps (i.e. gathering of required documents). As I was writing my CV, it was stated that I should put clinical/procedural skills. My hospital follows an annual/bi-annual nursing competency assessment which includes all the nursing procedures undertaken. Every time I sit for the competency assessment, it takes at least 1/2 day to answer all the skills written in the policy and procedure of the hospital. Do I need to include ALL the skills undertaken? Should I attach the copy of the latest competency assessment? I am not sure if the nursing education department will allow me to photocopy the said document. Thank you in advance..

I would like to ask if theres anyone here who are planning to enroll for OET training and preparation in australia> I want toknow the requriements and expenses for OET ???? thanks...

Good day everyone.

Okay, so I've successfully read all 820 pages of this thread and it has helped out a lot. Really comprehensive. Although I only scanned the latter parts of the thread cause majority of the posts have been redundant.

I'm pretty much clear with all the requirements needed, where to send the application, etc. and hopefully I get to gather and send all of it this or the next couple of months.

I graduated 2011 and recently just passed the NLE last December. I have no experience at all since I did just pass the NLE. Though I've been taking up seminars and courses (BLS, ACLS, IVT, etc.) which I think would be useful for me "personally" as this would give me additional knowledge in performing certain procedures and since, from what I've read in some posts, those certificates aren't really recognized in Australia. I would like to address these queries to cerydwin, joiemike, bobby or cioman as you guys are the most knowledgeable in this thread and with these kind of situations.

I'm planning to take up an EMT course here in the Philippines. After i'm done with the course my next step would be is to volunteer as one since i've read in the AGOS-40 form that you need at least 3 months full time experience. My questions are:

1. Would this volunteer experience as an EMT be considered as a "nursing" experience? I know it seems apparent because obviously both fields are the different, but just to clarify things and since those fields are relatively the same, i'd still push through with the question.

2. This EMT course i'm pursuing is Australian accredited, well at least according to the institution that conducts this course, it is. The certificates and ID's actually comes from Australia and they said those licenses are valid for a year. So my question is, would this course increase, even just the slightest nudge, my chances in landing a job in Australia? Especially in the hospital setting? The fact that those licenses are Australian accredited?

I have other questions but i'll just stick with these two first so as not to ask too much from you guys. Thanks!

Can you give me any suggestions of agency here in the Philippines that offer work &study program for Australia...I'm planning to study 1yr in Brisbane Aus.,but have to work in a nursing home to pay for my expenses also..I need an enlightenment to anyone who are concerned about my querries..

1. Based on my understanding and from what I've been reading, the experience you gained should be within the capacity of a registered nurse. That's why they "accept" volunteer experience as long as the task that these volunteers are performing is still within the scope of nursing practice.

2. I personally think that EMT experience will somehow help you in finding a job, but maybe not as much as a nursing experience would. I mean, both professions are still under health care and skills are sometimes transferable. But again, the scope of practice is different. Some (or most) employers would want to see actual nursing experience. Others are saying that the job market is beginning to get tight so it will be to your advantage to have a nursing experience.

I'm sure other members have a better opinion. Good Luck.
