Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.
Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

Part 1 thread New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand - Nursing for Nurses
Hi Mhai, just wanna ask, I have a friend who'll be taking aged care course in TAFE next year, and he wants to ask if they will be given a working visa? I told him I think they won't be as it is not on the skilled immigrants list, but anyhow he still wants to know. Because if not, after the course, he will apply for BP (that's if he will be permitted). Thanks in Advance :)
I'm not sure how to answer this... but as far as I know, my friends have been working as a PCAs for more than a year now while on a student visa... They were never able to change their visa to working.. Both of them applied for BP, the other one have finished her course last july and will be starting her job as a nurse next week on an employer-sponsored working visa. My other friend will be with me in the ETEA intake this Oct..
Basing on their situation, I guess the answer is NO, he can't be given working visa as PCAs. It would be better if he'll apply immediately as a nurse and take the BP rather than doing it the long way...
Hope this helps...

If your friend is still keen on taking the aged care course in TAFE (for the life of me, I don't know why you'd want to do that) and apply for BP then better start applying at AHPRA now because after your carer course and your visa expires, what then? Enrol on another course just to stay in Australia? The aged care course would not even mean squat to AHPRA because if you are a nurse that would have made you overqualified for the course to begin with.
You are right to say that after you finish the aged care course that you will not be entitled to get a work visa because it is not on the shortage occupation list. Good advice. Tell your friend to cut his losses and apply for your eligibility at AHPRA.
I'm sure his agent said "you will not need to pass the IELTS"

I have a colleague, too, that took this route. If by getting into this caregiving course, you will be exempted from the IELTS requirement because you have studied for 2 years in Australia then, I fully understand these people (If they really think they can't pass the minimum IELTS score). But, I wonder, how the new IELTS requirement of AHPRA will affect applicants who will go through this route? Hmmmmm........
hey thanks guys! sure i'll tell my friend about it. Good for me i didn't push through with aged care too, because as I've told him, it's a waste of time and money! Surely He will feel bad about this as he had payed half of his tuition already. I guess i'll tell him to start applying at AHPRA now. I also have another friend who's currently on his 8th month with the E.N course, and he's currently waiting for AHPRA's reply, as he plans to take BP.
As for me, I'm planning to retake IELTS too, too bad i got 6.5 with writing.
By the way, do BP schools consider volunteer work as experience? I have 5 months volunteer work experience and hopefully this May 2012, would mark my first year. I am planning to apply at AHPRA come February soon after I pass (hopefully) my IELTS. And when i'll have my eligibility, I'll be looking for some BP schools who only requires 1 year experience (as I continue with volunteer work here, to continue gaining experience). I really hope I could make it next year :)

Yes they do accept volunteer work experience... I think someone here posted that AU understands that its hard for Filipino nurses to get stable jobs in Phil... So no worries about that...
God bless on your IELTS!! Keep practicing your writing... If this helps, I got 6.5 in my writing the first time I took IELTS 4 years ago, I focused on this area when I took my IELTS again 2years after and got 7.5, just last month I took IELTS for the third time since the previous one expired again, and I got 8!! So just keep on practicing and Im sure you can do it!!!
Re : IELTS Writing
To all those having a hard time getting the minimum score in writing, I suggest you continue to practice on your own. Continue reading newspapers, especially opinion columns and editorials. Try to follow the writing style. Then, you can research or download sample IELTS test questions from the net. You can also go to National bookstore and check their IELTS manuals and copy the writing test questions. You don't have to buy them. But if you can afford the price, go ahead. The manual comes with an Audio CD.
Anyway, you can practice on your own with writing. Make sure to be conscious of the time limit given per task. But you have to have somebody check and critique your work for you. You can go to your alma mater and look for an English essay teacher that can help you out. Somebody I know hired one for, I think, P1,000.00 for 1 month.
hi. I sent my application last Sept. 6. And AHPRA received my application Sept. 9, but until now, they haven't acknowledged that they have already received my documents. Do I need to email them about this or do I have to wait for the confirmation? thanks.
hi netzkee..how come you knw that they received your application? through the tracking number of a courier? Where did you send it, in Vic?
that is unusual that they did not acknowledge you application and documents they received. is it complete? i heard that the processing in WA is getting slower each month due to a number of applicants, while in my case i was emailed 4 days after i sent my docs last july. Well, you can wait till this week or if you wanna be sure and end your doubts you could just send them an email too..:[anb]:
