Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.
Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

the 457 visa is the type of visa that your employer will be sponsoring you for work, am i right?? so if it take two months for that to be processed, that means... you'll be staying in AU for the entire two months doing nothing and just waiting until you get the visa??? That sure is a long time or waiting and a huge amount of money to be spent.... =(
From the time you apply and your employer sponsor you , it takes 2 to 3 weeks to process the subclass 457 business long stay visa. I don't know though if it's the average time line. But that's what my niece and her friend experienced early this year.
Were you also given a multiple travel 456? If yes, how do you think can we go about extending our stay for more than 90 days? I already bought a round-trip ticket way before I received my visa but it's okay coz I can always re-book the return for later. My question is, will our multiple 456 be cancelled should we opt to apply for a 676 while we're still there? Plane fares are so expensive that's why I wouldn't want to come back here then go back to AU after a few weeks just to look for work...
Hi Sweet,
I'm curious about your buying a plane ticket before your visa got released. I also planned to do that since buying my ticket early on is a lot cheaper. Right now, the PAL round trip ticket is about US $1K listed in the website. But the PAL call center rep and the Embassy advised me to purchase the tickets only after I receive my visa. I might end up paying so much more. . They told me I run the risk of having to rebook my itinerary if my visa entry date will not jibe with my pre-booked arrival at Melbourne.
My niece purchased her ticket late last year only days from her departure. She ended up paying US $1,400.00 round trip!!! That's $400 more that I could definitely use for pocket money. My budget is really, really tight already considering my ETEA tuition is way more expensive than the average Au $10,000 of other schools. And the exchange rate between the Australian dollar vs. the US dollar right now is not helping. I ended up remitting to ETEA US $1000 more because of the conversion. And I still ended up owing ETEA Au $ 13.00 based on their bank's conversion rate!!!! Never ending expenses.... and I still haven't even stepped foot in Australia yet!!!

Takes 2 years before you can apply for pr. Gees you can have tourists applying otherwise after 1 year!
We had our PR in 3 months...had a 457 visa before moving from the UK (we are a Filipino). Started work in Feb 09; we asked if we can apply for PR in May 09. Submitted our forms by the end of May and got our PR June 10 09. Where my wife works, 457 visa holders now wait for 1 year before they were given the go ahead to apply for visa. My wife came over as an RN, 3 months later she became a Clinical Nurse and by Feb 2010 she has now been working as Director of Nursing...and she is only in her 30s. I had no restrictions to work and started with agency work and now I work in the public sector.
Once you get your 457 guys, work hard and make yourself 'valuable' to the company you work for coz it does pay off.
Tourists are a whole different animal altogether, normally can only stay from 3-6 months I think without work privileges and they can't get PR with a tourist visa.

take joiemike's advice. It took us around 2 months because we were overseas (we were in the UK). I guess it would be different if you are already here.
Very impressed pr In 5 months from a sponsored visa 457 Only 6 months old, my English friends have never been able to do that when they were sponsored, one only applied the other day and was told to wait by Diac as they had not been in the country for two years, this was recent.
I think between 2009 and 2011, a lot has changed in policies at DIAC. The same with AHPRA, a lot has changed recently about the stricter English proficiency requirements. (Who knows what changes will happen with DIAC and/or AHPRA next year .) That is why I really decided to grab ETEA's offer for the Oct intake and not wait for other bp schools offering for the intakes next year. I didn't even wait for Mercy Health's interview scheduled this month for the Nov intake. I might have to sacrifice now for blowing my budget altogether considering ETEA's very high tuition fee.
I can't imagine how far I have come already. I originally planned to go through the NZ route (I had eligibility last year July), go through bp there and just apply for reciprocity with Aus. Much much cheaper supposedly. But no available slot for me up to this time even when the NZNC granted me a 6 month extension. I even hired an agent at US$500 just to help me look for a slot to no avail.
Now, I am bracing myself for another challenge, i.e. getting through the bp and hopefully be able to avail of the early exit.
But I am not complaining though. I still am thankful to God for guiding me so far up to this point. I always claim the verse in the Bible that says : "Everything will work together for good to them that love Him and are called according to His purpose".
And am very grateful to this thread and all the members here who have contributed their inputs, comments, advices, and even arguments. The sharing of ourselves here have really strengthened my resolve to finish what I have started. I consider this thread my support group. Every chance I get to give my two cents worth is my way of paying it forward. Cheers to all of us guys.....err.......mate!!!! Ozzie, ozzie, oi, oi, oi!!!:redbeathe:up:

2 year requirement has been around for sometime....http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/sir.htm
explains ways to permanent residency....our local hospital sponsored nurses, in 2002 and 2003 and 2004 and all had to wait 2 years to apply for permanent residency and now in 2011.
@milyong: you also have the no further stay?! me too. plus mine was single entry =((( panic mode :uhoh21: so what happens when the 3 monbth is up? go home and just wait for an offer for a working visa?
if you have a no further stay in your visa and single entry... is there a possibility you can request for that to be changed? like, can you write a letter of request to the immigration stating that you wish to return to AU??

Yes I bought the ticket a week before I got my visa. I booked a week before paying. Try Quantas. They did not ask for my visa. I know it's quite risky purchasing the ticket before having my visa but I knew in my heart that I'll be able to get my visa before the deadline CON gave me (super prayers!!). I bought a round trip ticket. I wasn't sure if I'll be given a 'no further stay' condition. Besides, the return ticket can be re-booked. All in all it costed me Php 45+K.
Check Quantas' website. You can compute your total fare just by choosing your flight dates.

yes, you don't need to attach one.. AHPRA requires the original copy from PRC itself...
