New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

still try reachin etea to put you on waitin list, just in case. :)

the interview questions were mostly about your experience... what you usually do? citing examples when you had to make a decision? cite a specific situation where you used initiative, when you had to escalate a situation...etc , etc...

for all those needing help in finding accomodation in Bendigo, just PM me... I'll try my best to assist you.

chabeli, the interview advise was helpful. :)

congrats reiken, don't worry at least you'll have more time to prepare for everything. :)

i hope imsodizzy can give us some idea about etea's bp. :)

Thanks, bro! How's your application to them going?

Hi there, still in the middle of the BP. I'm a guy by the way hehe. :D Everything's going smoothly so far. Most of my classmates are Filipinos as well & I also have classmates from India. They're all very nice.

imsodizzy,,, oopss sorry.

so, are you stayin in heidelberg? alone or with family? how's the cost of living? apologies if i ask too many questions.

It's 12 weeks in duration with option for 9 weeks early exit. So if you do well in class, in the hospital, you can graduate early (9weeks). If they feel that you still need time then you'll extend to 12 weeks.

Hello there. I'm staying with a family friend. The 1st 3 weeks will be in the classroom. Then 4 weeks of clinical placement (kilmore), then 1 week classroom then 1 week clinical placement again (kilmore). If you do well they you'll graduate in 9 weeks, if not you'll extend to 12 weeks. So you have to work on your accommodation with this schedule in mind. Accommodation in Kilmore will be facilitated by ETEA (facilitation only, you'll still pay the weekly rent which is around $100 a week I think).

Hmm...cost of living..with regards to food, just bring your own lunch with you 'coz food in the shops along Burgundy street is expensive. I once made the mistake of buying a $7 sandwich. Cannot really tell you in detail about the cost of living 'coz it will vary from person to person (where you are staying etc). Just keep in mind that you'll be spending also for internet connection, mobile phone etc. Just bring everything you need before you leave for Australia like pencils, pen, notebook etc so you won't have to buy it here.

Don't worry about the questions, this is what the forum is for. It's only my 2nd week here but I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability.

Ryan, those students who did their clinical placement in sale, Seymour, Portland, and warrnambool, were they offered a job at the hospital where they did their placement? These are in regional Victoria. Probably easier to find a job here?

What hospitals are affiliated with deakin? Are there some of your classmates who were destined in regional victoria?

no. im not sure. theres no assurance that you will be offered a job.

yes i think so..it is easier to get a job in regional victoria because in metro melb theres a lot of competition.

deakin has tied up with hospitals around melbourne...if there are no vacancies then thats the time you will be sent to regional vic. only two of us where assigned to portland which is really far from melb. and one of them went back to india as her visa expired and she cant land a job...oh well, things happened.

ryan09, my nursing background is in general medicine and Adult ICU.. with this experience, will it be easy for me to learn or adjust to the work/duties of an aged care nurse? any other additional special skills should i learn?

thanks again, sorry for keep asking..

hi, it doesnt matter, as during the aged care placement you will be taught on how to be an aged care RN...

nothing much really, you just need to know on how to deal with old people, most of them are demented, incontinent, etc...

having a background in general medicine would help you...:)
