New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

It seems that you don't have trouble with funds so I guess you should go for it if VCHN responds favorably to your application. If only I have relatives also in Melbourne then that would be great as it can lessen my costs for accommodation for the meantime.

I also hope that you get your NBV assessment soon. This will be great as you, Chabeli and me can get to meet up or something, plus I know that there are plenty more applying for NBV. That would be fun if we could all end up together in one place.

With luck, 3 months. Without luck, at least 6 months? Ooh, la la! So, that means Latrobe and Ballarat will have to wait year? Man! I can't wait until next year, my IELTS expire on Feb '11. But then again, there's Murdoch. I have to rob a bank to get there though.

Are you also waiting for your NBV letter or are you in Oz already?

If you can back read on page 404 of this thread I wrote about my own experience with regard to my application with NBV. It's probably a hit or miss thing when it comes to your case manager but like I said I know a number of people who applied way back and haven't gotten approved as of this time.

I am still here in the Philippines but I already got my partial acceptance letter from NBV and will have to submit some further requirements before my approval gets finalized. I am still waiting for my final acceptance with LaTrobe, they already gave me an offer after a month of waiting, but I have yet to submit all the required forms and payment (tuition) early next week. So I will have news probably late next week if I already have a slot with them for the June 2010 intake.

Good post you have there! What a gruesome experience you're having with the NBV application. I'm preparing myself for the same thing. I really hope you get everything with NBV and Latrobe eased out A.S.A.P.

Since I now know about you, let me say something about myself. I'm a second courser too but my course is 3 years. My 1st degree is BS Social Work which I finished in UP. My nursing school North Valley in Kidapawan City but I'm Davao based now. I know about Lanting since I used to live in Tandang Sora. My only paid working experience as an RN is at SM as a mall nurse. I had a hard time looking for another nursing job when my contract expired. All I got was a 1.5 month volunteer work at a secondary hospital which is one of the few hospitals here that don't ask for a training fee. I tried applying for Canada, too, but unfortunately, my visa application was denied. Hence, the Oz plan. But during this course of my Oz application, I am also reviewing for NCLEX which I am scheduled to take this March (I already scheduled my test before I knew about the IRON/BP).

About the documents for NBV, did they really ask for NBI clearance, board certificate, certificate of graduation, training certificates, course description and bank certificate? Because the only papers I attached were the ones in their checklist and the certificate of commission for notary public of the lawyer who certified my documents. Do you reckon I should send them the documents they asked of you as early as now?

I really want to go to Latrobe too but I don't think I can make it this June intake. But they said that I can apply now for the January intake next year so I might be doing that. Did you apply online?

I got the assistance of an Immigration agent to help me out in my application because I got swayed by them saying that I will encounter a lot of problems if I do it on my own and they said it will cause me money and time since I am not familiar with the process. So since I already entrusted my application with them, I did not bother searching for stuff before not until lately where I realized that I had to research and do follow ups on my own to speed up my application with NBV and LaTrobe. The agency was not very efficient in doing the follow up or rather they don't.

As far as I recall, I did submit my original transcript and RLE, NBI clearance, certificate of good standing from PRC, certificate of graduation, letter from school explaining BSN course for 2nd coursers along with subjects credited from 1st course, IELTS scores (I think I did pay British Council to send my IELTS to NBV), certified true copies of board rating, board certificate, diploma, BLS certificate and Hepa B screening certification. These are all that I can remember now, but I also handed my agent bank certificates as they said it was needed although I'm not sure if they sent it to NBV. I'm guessing they need it for themselves to know if I can pay them and also for my application for student's visa later on. I was also asked to get course descriptions from Ateneo and Lanting, for both courses, but then they didn't find the need to submit it. It would be wise also if you can prepare an affidavit regarding work experience as this would also be needed or you can provide them a certificate from your employer in case you have work experience. However, I would advise to stick with what NBV is initially asking from you and wait for their response on what else is needed. You don't want to bombard them with too many documents that might just cause them confusion while assessing your application. If after assessing your application and attached documents, and they find the need for you to revise something (ex. error in you name) or they find that you need some supporting evidence from your school or whichever, then that's the time you hand it to them. It will cause delay but that's how it is. You just have to be patient and you can try calling your case manager for updates if he/she is approachable then you won't have any problem.

I didn't submit training certificates as this was not asked from me, if this was asked from me then I would've given them about an inch thick of certificates from all my trainings/seminars. Also, in my case, I did not anymore submit a statutory declaration about having no work experience as my case manager was very kind to just ask me about it through email.

Yes, it was a very gruesome experience and I really hope I would get everything sorted out soon. It's really exhausting the wait and all. But so far, I keep my fingers crossed because God has been really great in helping me with my application. It has been running smooth since the start of this year when I got my acceptance letter from NBV. I really hope that my friend can get hers soon as we applied at the same time. Still there's no good feedback from her case manager.

Good luck to all of us!

By the way, you mentioned that you can apply with LaTrobe already for the next Jan intake? Are you sure about that? Because from what I know is that you have to meet their criteria of submitting to them the approval letter from NBV and your IELTS scores with all 7 in all sub tests before you can start your application with them. After you meet such requirements, you can apply with them. You will be given a portal with your username and password to verify if an offer has been made by the admission's officer. And this will take about 4 weeks according to the operator I was speaking to from LaTrobe. It did take me 5 weeks before I got an offer.

After you receive an offer, you still are not guaranteed of a slot unless you fill out the offer form, submit extra requirements they ask of you and pay for your tuition. Then your admission's officer will check the form you submitted and stuff before finally granting you the slot. Then you will have the letter from the school wherein you can use to apply for your Visa and also you need to finalize things with NBV after, by submitting to them in writing what course you are applying for, what school, course coordinator, venue, commencement date and this should be done prior to the commencement of your BP.

wow, wahine and haoyin...sure got a lot of information from your posts, thanks!

@haoyin, oh no, I have limited funds too, that's why Im carefully choosing which bridging course provider to take. And that's the reason why I want to go to Melbourne because I have relatives there who can "adopt" me and, thereby, lessen my expenses..hehehe. Yeah, I really do hope I get the NBV letter soon. So with Reiken and Newmac, who submitted their letters within the same time I did...and for the others who are waiting, too. It would be fun if we could all attend the BP together...:)

@wahine..hey, you're from NVC? Im from NVC, too. Do you know Blinq? Small world, huh? hehehe

Lots of luck to all of us!!! God bless!

@Haoyin

Yes, LaTrobe told me that I can start applying for the January intake as early as now whilst waiting for the NBV letter. I just don't know how to do it, I'm having a hard time with the ISIS since I don't know what type of program IRON is, whether it's an undergrad, postgrad, ELICOS, etc. I'm going to call them tomorrow for assistance. Or I might just do it my directly sending hard copies of my documents. But if you already went through the same thing, can you help me with it? :) I'm getting more anxious now learning about the 'lacking' documents that are the basic the cause of delays. I totally made sure there are no lapses in my papers and sent them exactly what was in the checklist. I just hope my package will fall in the hands of a kind case officer.

@drednag

Yes, blinq is my batchmate at NVC and she was the one who opened my eyes to this BP thing. We actually just met up last week, updated ourselves with each other's progress. Yup, small world it is! What batch are you?

I guess you have spoken with some sort of 'general' operator from LaTrobe since I was able to talk to the admission's officer herself, and according to her, I am not assured of any slots not until I complete all the necessary documents and and pay for my tuition. Besides, I do not know how they will give you an offer if they have not received your letter from NBV as this is their basis for giving you an offer. Although, you can try submitting an application nonetheless, I guess it will just be there but it won't progress unless you submit to them the required docs.

Since you are having trouble with the application process, let me try to help you.

Okay, If you go to LaTrobe's website,

1. Click on International Students

2. On the Left hand side, click on apply and accept

3. Click on how to apply

4. Click undergraduate and post graduate courses

5. Read step 1 and you can find IRON program here:

http://www.latrobe.edu.au/coursefinder/international/2010/Initial-Registration-for-Overseas-Nurses-%28IRON-Program%29.5519.html

6. Go back to number 4 and read step 2
