New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

So this natl reg thing means that we don't have anymore chance to get into the bridging course after july 2010?

No! As long as the board of nursing continues to assess and accept applicants then you have the chance to enter the BP. Like mentioned in the previous postings, the schools offering the BP's have more or less an expiration date under the nursing board in which the bridging courses will still be offered until the time that their accreditation expires. While some schools that can also offer the BP have seemingly stopped offering them is mainly due to lack of enrollees for some of these schools are situated far off in the outskirts of the city.

While QNC on the other hand stopped offering their Competency Assessment Program is due also to the fact that their program expires sometime June if I am not mistaken, and probably also in anticipation of the change coming up during the National Registration. According to some, QNC's special way of offering licensure under CAS is not that effective as compared to a student undergoing a few months of study course so perhaps this type of assessment will not be anymore continued. However, we don't really know this, for all we know, after the National Registration, they will once again come up with a type of program similar to CAS of QNC.

yes you have to wear a uniform in most cases its white top and navy blue pants...some of my classmates bought their uniforms in the philippines.

no need for you to bring bp app, steth etc...its all provided, but it wont be yours, they will only provide it for the purpose of return demontrations...

bring the same documents that you have submitted to the nbv ;)

in most cases, institutions will ask you to have these vaccinations: hep a,b,c(of course theres no vaccine for hep c yet),mmr, meningo, swine flu, dpt, polio (these are deakin requirements)...vaccinations can be done in australia..i would suggest for you to just have your hep a vaccination in australia...:)in most institutions, they are offering screening and vaccinations to its students just like deakin university.

*note: you need to check it with your bp provider, as some of the requirements may differ in each institution..:)

to add to ryan's info, here are a few more travel tips:

-- you are only allowed 20kg to 23 kg of checked luggage and 5 kg of carry on.. unless you are willing to pay 22 (usd) for every excess kilo

-- i am hinting that when you arrive here, it will be the colder season so just bring a couple of your jackets and pants that you really like and shoes then buy the rest here maybe pack for about a 10 days trip then wash n dry it :) anyhow you'll be in uniform

-- buy the navy trousers in the philippines. you will only need it for 3 months so 1 is fine because you can always wash n dry again . chabeli got a navy blue pants from dockers for about 1500php.. it will be harder to get a trousers here for 30 aud unless it's really super made in china, lol ..so get it there.

-- for la trobe, they ask the students to buy the littmann stetoscope from them but if you have one already you don't have to buy.. any brand will do as long as its high quality

-- i'm not really sure if you need to bring books but chabeli and classmates would just borrow in the libe or get their notes online. so if books will make your luggage heavier let go of it , lol

-- bring your laptops with you because assessments and homeworks are passed online (for la trobe) which means you should also look for accomodation which has an internet

--if in case you have a driver's license, bring it since it is another valid proof of identity plus you can rent a car on a weekend so you can go around and explore (the buses here in bendigo are very limited), you can drive here using philippine license as long as you're on a student visa -- i think for the first 6 months only then if you need to drive longer than that, you need to convert to australian visa

--chabeli got the swine flu free from the oshc , i can get mine for free too but i did not get yet , all you gotta do is present the oshc card

@ ryan : when will you treat us out for lunch at nando's :) :yeah::D

hey, who's taking their bridging at Western Australia? :sofahider is it true that all bridging course providers there have one year duration?

Anyone out there who might be just lurking in the forums that will go in the next intake of LaTrobe? I am really very anxious and my anxiety heightens with each passing day... I am worried that I'd get very lonely and emotionally traumatized when I get there. According to Chabeli's gf, it's really lonely there even when they are already together. Now what more if I'm alone...? Aside from the fact that I'm already on a very tight budget since I paid a hefty price to an agency whom I applied with. Now I will have to contend with emotional distress, living expenses and personal needs all on my own. I know I am not ready and will never be ready unless I just jump into it. I just pray that I'll be able to endure and make it.

That aside, my friend that applied same time as I did (July 2009) with NBV hasn't been approved as of yet and the case manager of hers just wouldn't attend to her application even if she calls them up for update. Imagine being told that your application is waiting to be assessed when you lodged in your application 6 months ago? And the case manager wouldn't give her a time frame for when she will get any news at all. That's just dumb. I mean I know that they have many applicants but I would guess that her case manager just isn't efficient enough in dealing with applications and aside from that is that I feel they are favoring Indians over Filipino applicants as Indians gets to be assessed faster (I am not against Indians) just that I have a feeling that there are some bias.

Well if there's anyone out there LaTrobe bound for the June intake, pls post here so that at least I know there would be another Pinoy going there. I hope I keep my sanity when I'm there all by myself.

I just received my Assessment from QNC and i'm not eligible for registration as a nurse but as an EEN.I'm surprised as I studied my nursing course for 5 years in a Top performing school here in Baguio and transferred in a 35 plus year-old well established nursing school, and a friend from same school received a positive assessment from QNC. Anyway,it is still a blessing coz it is not doable for me to proceed with CAS even if i had a positive assessment .

Since almost end of last year QNC has been processing applicants as EEN not because of your lack in nursing qualification but because they are still finishing a lot of those taking the part A and part B of the CAS when the program has already set a date of cessation. It will be hard for them to accommodate those who will still be granted RN and be able to finish both parts of the CAS program. You have to consider that most CAS applicants have to undergo a 160hour on the job training and this will be a problem if the said program is already nearing its final end. It is also hard for you to just be starting now with your CAS exams and by March if ever you will be taking the part A exam, you will need to have passed 3 out of 4 components of the exam or you will be forfeited to finish the program.

Sadly, you had to wait for this long just to come out empty handed but your best bet right now is to apply for the IRON bridging courses.

hello,

my opinion is that your initial findings based on your research is true, i.e. i doubt you will be given work permit or 457 visa as EEN as it is not part of the "list".. but i may be wrong in the sense that you may not be eligible for immigration but you may be eligible for 457 visa / work permit.. this reminds me of the previous pages of this thread about a manila based agency which "could" send you to Australia and "work" initially as EEN then afterwhich the employer will pay for your BP.. I had doubts on that scheme for the same reason that i have doubts that Oz grants work permit for EEN.. Just the same, i maybe wrong.. You may ask the thread member who raised that issue in the previous page...

good luck... i hope im wrong so that you will be able to go to australia.. im too is a 2nd courser but thru a 3-year nursing program.. i bet that you are in a 2-year nursing program which resulted to an assessment of EEN instead of RN..

pray, it helps...

Hi cioman, thanks for relplying. Anyway after some research I found out that YES, EENs can be legally granted a 457 (work) visa granted that an employer will sponsor you. But I have yet to see info on whether they are eligible for PR after some time of legally working as an EEN or EN.

I finished my BSN for 8 semesters so that's 3 years plus 2 summers without repeating or failing anything. I studied in a University, not just in some college. Hey no offense to those who took up their nursing in a college okay? I am just trying to explain my situation here :). I dunno why they assessed me as an EEN only. But I guess they're the authority and that assessments are on a case to case basis so... Anyway I have paid for the written exam already but now I feel as if I shouldn't have. But my hubby said to try every avenue (so that we wont have any what ifs in the future) so I guess I still made the right decision. I am now a daily visitor of www.immi.gov.au as I am really looking into every page that can give info on how to convert a 457 as an EEN to a PR in the future. I have also tried ringing a couple of migration consultancy firms but they cannot give me a straight answer because they said I have to pay for a migration assessment fee. I repeatedly told them I am not interested to sign up for that (the skilled migration thing), but that I'm only willing to pay for a consultation or advice of a registered migration agent. They say their agents do not process such situations.

Please please if there's anyone out there who's already in AU, if ever you have friends or friends of friends who are in the same situation please post it here. As to what actions they are gonna take, what advices were given to them I really need the advice. See I haven't taken up the exam yet so in actuality I'm not an EEN yet. But if you've read in my previous posts, I have also applied to another Board so I'm thinking, what if I'll also be assessed as an EN? Is it worth the 10,000AUD tuition for the BP?

I am hoping that the assessment of the other board of nursing will be RN. If so I'd gladly shell out the money for the tuition (even if it means a lifetime of servitude to my relatives who will be funding for it). And I'm hoping that I will receive the assessment at about the same time that I receive my test results for the Part A of QNC. So that I can compare the two. But I am also worried that CQU's result for my part A will reach me earlier that the other board's assessment. I'm not saying I'll pass the Part A 100%. I'm just exploring possibilities. Of course I have to do my best and study for the exam to do justice for the almost 11,000 pesos that I paid. Oh boy....

I am sorry for my long post. It's just that I am really really confused as to what my next step will be after taking the Part A. Even if I have just recently passed the NCLEX my heart is now set for Australia so I am looking for ways to fulfill this dream of ours (mine and my hubby's). Sorry again and thanks... :crying2:

Hi chocokat79

Reading your post reminded me that according to the migration consultant that I applied with, I was lucky because I was granted RN and not EEN because likewise I'm a 2nd courser but finished my BSN for only 2 years. I guess even if one applies with the other nursing boards other than QNC there would still be chances of being granted EEN rather than RN status. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to EEN, therefore I would also benefit from your research regarding this matter if ever one wishes to apply for work and about PR.

I would try to ask around about EEN and if ever I do get some news ill inform you right away. I hope you get good feedback from other boards you applied with soon and good luck with your exam.

Thank you Haoyin for replying. I would do the same and post here whatever info I can gather regarding EENs. Are you here in Manila? May I know the migration firm you are talking about? You can PM it to me. I'll be willing to pay for a consultation service to them just as long that they are knowledgeable and willing to answer my questions regarding EENs. Then I'll post the answers here for the benefit of those assessed as EENs or ENs.

Which also got me thinking, Are there people here who were assessed as ENs or EENs by other boards other than QNC? Please please, if you're hesitant to post in this thread kindly PM me. I just want to know if there is SOMEONE out there who's in the same situation as mine but was assessed by boards other than QNC. I wanna know your opinion, if you'll still be doing the BP even with the fact that you'll be doing the BP for ENs only.

Thank you. I really apologize for my emotional outburst. :crying2: I'm really just plagued by this problem of mine. Not to mention that QNC's deadline is looming. If I fail one component, will it be wise for me to study for the module (assuming that it's only one module, I think I'm allowed to take just one)?

hey , i didn't mean to get you anxious. i guess it's really normal to go through loneliness when you're in a completely new place because we don't have our circle of friends and family around and not even neighbors or a nearby sari-sari store where we can hang around when we're bored. so it's just me and chabeli face to face with each other each day.

but anyhow, you don't have to worry bec the moment you do clinical placement, you'll be too busy to even think about it. you just want to sleep on your free days. what's harder is the distance from one place to another.. like it would be cool to meet up with ryan and the deakin pinoys, like an "eyeball" hahaha.. but it's kinda hard coz they're in melbourne. only internet is keeping me sane and tv too although we don't have tfc. lol. it's too early to be worried so just save up positive energy there, shoo away negative energy :redpinkhe

but remember also that you have your classmates that you can agree to hangout with on a weekend ... bendigo is just a really peaceful and quiet city. conducive for retreat lol...:yeah:

You don't mean to make me anxious but I get more anxious with what you're saying LOL. I mean look at you, you have Chabeli with you yet your still lonely as hell. I can't imagine how I will fare once I am already there. I hope I get to meet more Pinoys there and also I get to meet with you and Chabeli.
