New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi Aelith. I would like to ask if you have any idea about the competence assessment test part A? what type of examination and what are the review materials and books used? thanks. You are very helful to all of us.

thanks a lot aelith! yup, i do have a relative there that is why i prefer to study somewhere in sydney as i have nothing to worry about food and accomodation. Do you think i could still make it if i try to enroll now? and could you also guide me with that? hehehe i really don't know how to start. i have no problems with ielts. could you also share the strength and weaknesses of each of the universities program. like in ACU i guess its strength is it is a lot more affordable while in Uni. of sydney is that its already a masters degree program. please enlighten me more aelith.:banghead:

Hi Aelith. I would like to ask if you have any idea about the competence assessment test part A? what type of examination and what are the review materials and books used? thanks. You are very helful to all of us.

The areas that you need to tackle in the Part A examination can be found on page 27 of this thread.

Those are the areas that you need to focus. That's coming from the Program Coordinator. There is no materials available. You can actually view these information over the internet. check queensland health site and queensland nursing council site.

Thanks very much kit25. got to burn many candles tonight.

The clinical module is about 905 AUD too if I am not mistaken. If you look at the 4 Education Modules, 1 module is for the clinical part in Australia which is 4 weeks. The price per modules is 902 or 905 AUD according to Central Queensland University's website.

hi Aelith,

1. If I fail the clinical exam, how many education modules I have to take? 4 modules ? it means I have to pay 905 * 4 = 3,620 AUD? and I will take 4 *4 = 16 wks to study,right?

2. Which universities in Queensland offer the clinical modules to study after I fail in part B exam ? and this is called a bridging program?

3. If I go to Queensland to complete the clinical part, how long do I know that I pass or fail? When the clinical courses start in each year? Can I start to study immediate after I know the test result?

4. About written exam in part A,can I take it at IDP around the world? and if I fail in part A, can I take education module online without going to study in Australia? and which universities offer the course online?

I hope you don't mind answering my questions. I am really think about this because I have limited money to the whole process.

Thanks you in advance for your kindness.

Thought so. :) That is good for you. If you really want to go for 2009 then I really would need you to pass the application now. As in today or tomorrow lol. That is just application, then it will take another 10 days or so to process it. But I have a good feeling it will take some more time because this month is the deadline - will be pretty busy I reckon.

By the way, which area will you be staying because the University might be far away from your place?

Well for the Universities' Pros and Cons, I have listed the following as a general guide for you. But please note that this is based on my research and opinion only. :)

hi aelith,

1. if i fail the clinical exam, how many education modules i have to take? 4 modules ? it means i have to pay 905 * 4 = 3,620 aud? and i will take 4 *4 = 16 wks to study,right?

a: if you fail part a, the number of modules you have to take will depend on which areas you did not answer well in the exam. it doesn't necessarily mean that when you fail part a, you will have to do all of the theory modules.

also, the education modules, if i'm not mistaken is divided into 3 theory and 1 clinical. each module is designed to be completed in 12 weeks only. you are allowed to take/enroll in more than 1 module at a time.

2. which universities in queensland offer the clinical modules to study after i fail in part b exam ? and this is called a bridging program?

a: should you fail part b, qnc will advise you to take the clinical module. the clinical module as well as all other education modules are facilitated only by central queensland university.

the bridging program is the cas program itself. the cas program has two pathways: education modules and challenge test.

3. if i go to queensland to complete the clinical part, how long do i know that i pass or fail? when the clinical courses start in each year? can i start to study immediate after i know the test result?

a: i cannot tell you how long it will take as it is a case to case basis. it will also depend on the bulk of applicants qnc is processing at the time.

i am not sure what clinical courses you are asking. can you elaborate more, so i can give you a more appropriate answer? :)

what test result are you asking? and what will you study?

education modules and challenge test are two very different pathways. you will have to choose which pathway you will take and tell that to qnc. they will ask you later on, so you don't need to tell them right away when you apply.

4. about written exam in part a,can i take it at idp around the world? and if i fail in part a, can i take education module online without going to study in australia? and which universities offer the course online?

a: i am not sure about idp in other countries if they can give the said exam. but here, they don't have that. (i'm not in the philippines)

the education modules are offered off-shore (outside australia). all you need to have are a working computer and internet. however, the clinical component of the module is only to be taken in australia. qnc will advise you where you will have your placement for that.

again, only central queensland university is offering the cas program.

i hope you don't mind answering my questions. i am really think about this because i have limited money to the whole process.

thanks you in advance for your kindness.

i hope that helps. :)

i hope that helps. :)

million thanks for your answers :yeah:it really helps ~

btw,i am so sorry about my ambiguous questions as well :D

q: if i go to queensland to complete the clinical part, how long do i know that i pass or fail? when the clinical courses start in each year? can i start to study immediate after i know the test result?

i mean if i choose the challenge test, i must go to queensland to take the clinical exam. after i taking part b clinical exam, and i know the result that i can not pass it.

i must take clinical module, rite? is it only cqu offering the clinical module? and when i can entry into the clinical module in cqu?

i head that in pre-registration program which i have to study about 2 years has one entry in march ,thus i am curious that in the clinical module of the cas. i have to start on march too?

don't worry, i don't really mind your questions. just that i want to give you the answer you really want so i need some clarifications. ;)

cqu is the only one providing the cas unlike in other states where you have more than one provider. the same is true with nsw, wherein only one body is conducting the competency program.

when the cas program can be taken, will depend on which pathway you chose. education modules are offered on a rolling start basis, which means enrolment into the modules is ongoing. to enrol in a module, you need to send the enrolment form and fee only for the module/s you want to study to the cas. on the other hand, the challenge test is held on the second wednesday of every month and all efforts are made to ensure that you can take the test as close as possible to your town of residence. your application must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the exam date you are applying for.

the clinical module will be scheduled by qnc, they will tell you when and where you will have your clinical competence practice.

the pre-registration degree is different so don't confuse yourself with that one. cas program and degrees are two very different things. :)

thanks again aelith! you're really a great help to everyone! my aunt lives in liverpool. i have another set of questions! hehe 1.) what's the difference of a graduate entry from the normal bn degree? 2.) could you please also this line have to apply for credit for the normal bn degree (maximum credit will be 50% of the duration of the degree) this is about the acu program. 3.) what does this mean? philippines is assessment level 2 for higher degrees 4.) where will you get the penal clearance? 5.) lastly, since i might be out of time to make it for the 2009 intake for the universities in sydney. could you suggest other uni that are somewhere near sydney with a low tuition fee? thanks in advance!:)

liverpool? she's living a bit far from all the universities in sydney. she's in the southwestern part. you can check on maps.google.com.au and compare the area where your aunt lives and the areas of the universities. i have provided the suburbs in my previous post about the universities in sydney. it'll most probably take you an hour (if you have a car) and more if you're going to take the bus and train. :o tell her the location and she'll tell you how far she is from any of them. uws will be near, only if the graduate entry is offered in other campuses, but unfortunately, it is only offered in hawkesbury and that's soooo far away from your aunty. the closest (and still so far lol) is sydney university.

1.) what's the difference of a graduate entry from the normal bn degree?

graduate entries are 2 years in duration opposed to the 3 years duration of a normal bn degree. graduate entries' main requirement is any bachelor's degree, while, a bn degree only require you to finish at least the first 1-2 years of our degree in the philippines. graduate entries will not have any basic/unrelated subjects anymore as you will only be taking the core subjects and some related elective subjects. a bn degree will require you to go through all of the basic subjects. you can apply for credits in a normal bn degree, however, you almost always cannot apply for credits in a graduate entry scheme as credits have been already given (that is why it is shortened to 2 years).

2.) could you please also this line have to apply for credit for the normal bn degree (maximum credit will be 50% of the duration of the degree) this is about the acu program.

elaborate you mean? in any normal bn degree, or any degree for that matter, you can apply for credits. credits simply mean that there will be some subjects that will be removed from the normal list for that certain degree because you may have taken up the said subjects before in your previous tertiary studies. every university has their own policy and maximum allowable credits per course. as for acu, the maximum allowable credits to be granted is only up to half of the duration of the bn course. for example, you can get credits up to 1.5 years worth which will shorten now the course to 1.5 years opposed to the original 3 years. and in acu, you can only apply for credits after you have enrolled. meaning, you will only know the duration of the said course later on. pretty risky but that is entirely up to you. some universities though allow application for credits together with the application for the course; that way, it will be a lot easier for the student.

3.) what does this mean? philippines is assessment level 2 for higher degrees

for student visas, australia's immigration have come up with assessment levels for countries applying. the assessment level is from 1-5, 1 being the countries with the least restrictions and requirements, and can also apply online; and 5, being the exact opposite. also, the assessment levels would not only depend on the country but also on the level of education you are applying for.

for example, philippines has different assessment levels. if you are applying for a higher education (e.g. bachelors degree, masters by coursework), the assessment level is 2 (less restrictions and requirements but cannot apply online). postgraduate research degrees though are assessment level 1. if you are going to study an english course only or certificate/diploma courses, the assessment level will then be 3. in general, assessment levels 3-5 would need a pre-assessment process first prior to lodging and a lot of other requirements.

so, basically, the assessment level will guide you as to which documents you need to prepare and submit for the application for a student visa.

4.) where will you get the penal clearance?

penal clearance simply means police clearance. in the philippines, there are so many places where you can apply for the nbi clearance. as the name implies, can get them from nbi offices or any other satellite offices. hehe :D. as for the other countries you have lived at for more than 12 months in the last 10 years, you will have to apply in their corresponding office. i wouldn't know exactly where lol.

5.) lastly, since i might be out of time to make it for the 2009 intake for the universities in sydney. could you suggest other uni that are somewhere near sydney with a low tuition fee? thanks in advance!:)

those universities i have listed in my previous post are the only ones in sydney area that offer the bachelor of nursing degree. other universities in sydney do not offer such degrees. if you really meant "other universities outside sydney", it will take you ages to get to that certain university imho. sydney itself is really huge.

acu would be the cheapest really. that's one of the lowest i've seen in all states, as far as my research goes only. you can research some more, as i may have missed a certain university. however, for sydney, i'm sure that's all there is. it is really expensive to study there because you are going to be an international fee paying student. they charge you the full fee and a bit more than normal fee-paying local students. add the cost of living... a big ouch! for sure. :crying2:
