New grad...desperate for a job

Published

Hi everyone, I am a new grad who've been looking for job for a while now....so far I haven't had any luck, not even one interview. I live in NY but I am willing to relocate. I am open to all shifts and all facilities....if anybody know of anywhere in NY, except for upstate, that's hiring please let me know, I don't know what else to do.

There are many threads having to do with this same problem, and with some good advice in them. Research the other threads, which can sometimes be quite lengthy. And good luck...this job market lull will pass, you will get experience, and eventually be able to pick and choose where you want to work.

Thanks for replying....I will do that.

Have you contacted any of the facilities who have open positions for new grads I have posted here on Allnurses over the last few months?

How about homecare? It's much more less stressful than a facility ...although some facilities are good ......

Home care skilled nursing is great...you can do anywhere from 4 hrs to 16 hrs a shift, and you work when you want, usually you submit your available days/nights and they will put you somewhere.......most nurses have specific shifts on specific days/nights with the same patient........ I do peds skilled homecare nursing for high tech pts.....it's really great and you can do 1:1 nursing care the way we should be able to....plus you really get to know your patient(s)......I have a couple of kids I care for on specific shifts on different days/nights........you might think about that if you like peds....... I absolutely wanted no part of peds in nursing school....said I'd never do peds........funny thing is that's what I ended up doing and wouldn't want to do anything else.....lol funny how things change.... good luck!

PMFB-RN...I am looking into some of the places you've mentioned....thank you very much for refering me.

MrsReillyRN...I have lost all preferences that I had before...I am open to almost anything. Though it seems as if even the agencies are asking for a year of experience now...but I am going to keep looking. Do you know of a particular agency that would hire a new grad for home care?

All usually require atleast a year experience, but I do know of a few nurses that went to agencies that did not verify the info, but they were CCT's & CNA's for a longtime first. I would not reccomend doing this!

Hi desperate, I too am desperate. I graduated in May, passed boards and have been applying ever since but no luck. Everyone wants experience, even home health care and long term care facilities. Now the only internships I have seen are requiring that you had an externship with them but they have not been offering either so I am curious how that works. Then there has been the issue of the facilities that are now changing degree requirements to BSN only which is hurting many since many I know had a bachelors in a different field and went for their ASN to finish sooner because they needed a job. So I don't know what to say accept to keep on trying and sooner or later things have to give. I am watching and listening to everything everyone is recommending in the hopes of getting some insight to better my search and hope it will help you. I want to thank everyone for their info and would appreciate any information anyone has regarding PA in the Phila area. Like others I applied to CHOP and the VA with no luck but I am very happy to hear that others were able to get into these facilities and wish them luck!!!! Well, thanks for all the info, keep posting and any help is appreciated. As for "New grad...desperate for a job", you are not alone, don't give up, you will prevail!!! Good Luck!!!

I've been working for a month now in a SNF, it's a nice working experience, you start to build confidence especially on your nursing judgment. I plan to move to another facility after a year or so. It's better to have this job than to not work at all. It gets hard especially at night when you handle 31 patients, do accuchecks every 6 hours for most of the patients, do med passes, charting, medicare, 24 hour report, do the Aid assignments, prepare dialysis patients. But once you have your routine it will be ok. :)

Thank you everybody for replying...I am going to keep looking, if find anything i'll let you know...again, thanks.
