new grad: cant find a job

Published

i am 22 years old, recently graduated in May 2015, passed NCLEX in july.

I have applied to about 3 hospitals, got one interview but did not get the position.

Ive called several other hospitals but they have told me that they arent hiring new grads until further notice.

There are residency programs, but their applications dont open up until mid October/november.... the thing about this is that i want to move out within the year, and signing a contract for 2 years with these programs will make that impossible... my parents want me to sign up for these programs, but i cannot imagine myself doing so because it is not what i want.

How do i go about finding a job? Apart from applying to residency programs...

Do clinics hire new nurses?

Should i limit my applications to one area or submit to surrounding areas? (BTW I live in Miami but want to move to Georgia)

Anything helps.

Thanks.

I meant clinics*

thank you.

Don't be walked on. Stay persistent. Expand locations if needed.

I live in Savannah, Ga and the hospital I work at hires new grads.

Specializes in Neurosciences, stepdown, acute rehab, LTC.

I just have to comment about not being sure how hospitals think new grads will get experience.. I dont think they consider giving new grads experience just for the sake of it. It's an investment on their part and it doesn't matter to them how you get experience, as long as it's not a loss for them. They're not thinking about your career development when hiring you. They think about who will be the best investment for them. Paying thousands to train someone moving within the year is a bad investment.

I believe you need to widen your search a lot. You said you only applied to 3 hospitals. Not sure if there aren't more where you live or not. There are some people on these boards who can't move due to a spouses job etc. Sounds like you could move, but your parents don't want you too, but you don't want to stay where you are for two years anyway, so start looking out of the area. I know someone who applied to over 100 positions, they kept track on a spread sheet of each place applied to and noted when a rejection was received. Eventually they got a job but had to move out of state. Many threads on here of people in your same situation.

Specializes in Pediatric Critical Care.

Why not apply to new grad residencies in GA if thats where you are wanting to move to?

When I was a new grad, I wanted to move to a different state....so I applied to a residency there and moved. I'm so glad that I did.

they should consider it experience seeing how hospitals are difficult to get into without any prior experience yet hospitals still wont hire new grads.... again, not sure how they think we'll gain any sort of experience if all hospitals have the same mindset of not hiring new grads...

Okay but LOTS of hospitals DO hire new grads. Many of these positions are in new grad residency programs. Look for a residency program in GA and move there for it. That way you wont have to stay where you are unhappy...just go to GA now. Is there a reason that you cant? If its money, then believe me when I say that you can move cheap if you try. I've done it multiple times. Two years flies by. Besides, you really need to stay in your first job for ideally a year MINIMUM to get a good foundation.

thanks. will do.

which hospital is it?

i completely understand what you're saying.

training someone is a big investment.

this is why im trying to avoid any sort of residency program so as to not leave midway through it.

thank you.

yes, ive applied to 3.

some ive called and they straight out told me that no new grads are being hired.

the others, their program applications are not up yet and i am not able to sign up.

there's a big hospital (their program opens up mid october) here that owns several other hospitals, and its sort of just one application. so i have to wait till that opens up.

only thing really keeping me here is that i dont have the money to move (also a biggie, my parents dont want me to move or apply elsewhere other than local hospitals)

thank you

i definitely dont have anything really tying me down to stay here in Miami, FL other than that i dont have the money to move right now (and my parents dont want me to move out; they dont want me to apply elsewhere other than whats local). this is why im trying to get any job at this point (other than residency) to try and save up money in order to be able to move where i know ill be happy.

i would hate to start a program here and leave without finishing the years. not only would it be bad for the hospital, but id feel bad for doing so and also would have to pay lots of money for the time they spent training me.

there are 3 hospitals in GA that have residency programs and ive heard are great hospitals. im thinking about just sending an application off to one of the those im truly interested in just to see what happens.

thank you

Have u tried LTACH's?
