i am 22 years old, recently graduated in May 2015, passed NCLEX in july.
I have applied to about 3 hospitals, got one interview but did not get the position.
Ive called several other hospitals but they have told me that they arent hiring new grads until further notice.
There are residency programs, but their applications dont open up until mid October/november.... the thing about this is that i want to move out within the year, and signing a contract for 2 years with these programs will make that impossible... my parents want me to sign up for these programs, but i cannot imagine myself doing so because it is not what i want.
How do i go about finding a job? Apart from applying to residency programs...
Do clinics hire new nurses?
Should i limit my applications to one area or submit to surrounding areas? (BTW I live in Miami but want to move to Georgia)
Anything helps.
Thanks.
Carilion Clinic in Roanoke VA is looking for RN's. Level 1 trauma center. New RN pay is embarrassing but a nurse union is needed!!! With the cheap cost of living etc. its not a bad gig spite their disrespectful pay. (31% lower than the national avg.)Acclrtdbsnstudent :)
Sent from my iPhone using allnurses.
If you don't mind my asking, what is the new RN pay? and the national average?
The national average is pretty skewed due to places like California and NYC. Keep in mind that while you may be making a bit more $ in those areas, housing and other COL expenses are typically triple or more what they are in the lower wage areas of the country. People often overlook this and just look at the hourly $. Make sure you take into account how much of that hourly you will actually see once your expenses are paid.
I'm really curious to know what this volunteer program will be like when you get into it. If you think of it, post how it goes so I can satisfy my curiosity
well, todayy was "training" and we got out job descriptions which sounds more like a CNA job than RN.
Since we arent employed with the hospital, we cannot do any RN tasks.
So i'll be volunteering my time to help with ADLs, transferring patients for procedures, getting them supplies (food, water, bedding, etc), & taking vitals, etc.
but hey, its a foot in the door for the hospital and hopefully will get hired/interviewed at the end.
This is true and can testify this is what happened to me- I was a new grad and was in the same position as you- applied all over the place and was only able to get a job in an ambulatory clinic. That was 4 years ago and now when i apply for other jobs they say I lack experience. No one will give me experience because of my position now.Good luck
Keep looking
Just an FYI; that url I posted up the thread a ways often has positions posted for residencies for working nurses that want to get into critical care or some other specialty but lack hard experience but aren't new grads (lots of residencies want people with no more than 6 mos, preferably none). You might have to relocate but it is an option.
They'll look something like this one:

Oh my gosh I am in the exact same position, only I live in Orange County, California. I know exactly how you feel, I thought I would get a hospital job so easily, but that's definitely not the case. Hang in there you aren't the only one and good luck! :)
Thank you! Good luck to you as well!
