We just added a Glossary option to the site to help with all the Nursing lingo and tech lingo used online. Hopefully you will find this helpful.

We have already added several terms/abbreviations that are commonly used on this BB and nursing terms, but we need your help to populate the list to make it more useful.

Please post your suggestions to this thread, please include the Term and its definition.

I used to work in a Catholic hosp where any diaster was announced as an "Ave Maria" I always liked that for some reason. I guess it seemed appropriate.

FRS = "Funky Rhythm Syndrome" (i.e. no clue what it is, but it appears to be perfusing and the patient appears to be alive...)

CYA = "Cover your...ahem...you know...)

E.N. Enrolled nurse Aus.

E.E.N. Endorsed Enrolled nurse

R.N. Registered nurse (aka "Sister")

C.N. Clinical nurse

C.N.C. Clinical nurse consultant

N.U.M. Nursing unit manager

S.O.B. Shortness of breath.

W.A.C. Without a clue

Specializes in CVOR,CNOR,NEURO,TRAUMA,TRANSPLANTS.

Emily, code brown in the hospital that i work at is chemical spill.

DNA- diploma nursing accelerated

residude= male resident...residette= female resident.... Bed Queen= Unit Manager (male or female) on call. LOL=Little Old Lady endearing term Weather Check=Going out for a cigarette Sunrise Services=Last break on the night shift

In my hospital, a Code Brown is a patient incontinent of stool....!!Lots of stool.. Guess that could be a chemical spill..LOL

Not in the Glossary (don't know if they're mentioned yet, forgive me if they are):

TAH: total abdominal hysterectomy

T&A: NONONO! NOT what you're thinking-- here, it's tonsils and adenoids

Appy: appendectomy

Open Chole: open cholecystectomy

Lap Chole: laparoscopic cholecystectomy

At my facility we use:

CGA - contact gait assist

D & I - dry and intact (for dressings)

A & O - alert and oriented (x1, x 2...etc)

PA - personal alarm

TX - treatment

H & P - History and Physical
