you know amy I am not sure if I have to configure the loans to pay. I think you can pay as little or as much to any qualifying loan as long as you keep your receipts to show you are paying towards the loans specified in the agreement. My husband and I plan to pay towards the highest interest rates 1st. We deferred a lot of my loans for the next year and I think I have like 2 more years for deferrment so I will be able to apply the amount to those pesky higher interest loans and worry about the others later.

The only concern I have at this point besides if I actually got it, is I am 5 months preggos. I read somewhere that you only get 7 weeks off before you have to suspend your loans. I guess once its official I need to contact someone b/c I plan on being off for at least 8 weeks. I also have a friend that was awarded last year and she became prego while waiting for confirmation so maybe I should just talk to her. I know she did tell me it throws you into a way higher tax bracket when it comes time to pay taxes. she said it almost doubled her income. She suggested I put a little back on each pay ck to cover if we owe any extra.

as for how much taxes did they take out... I think the amount they agreed to pay was like $87000 and that put 60% somewhere around $55,000 and after taxes (wait for it) like 36999 is gonna be applied for the 1st 2 years. I mean it still puts me at right at $1500 a month and since half my loans are in default we will be able to double up on payments to those higher interest loans but I was a little surprised when I saw it. I had read other blogs in the past years but noone had actually put a dollar amount. forgive me readers if I am being crass for sharing my business but I know that I would have liked to know more specifics so there you go:) If I did get it I will be so HAPPY! What a financial blessing this would be:) thanks for letting me share!

Sully - no THANK YOU for sharing! I have been DYING to know specifics, but felt awkward about asking people their personal monies business, ya know!??Yeah, I was concerned about how the taxes were going to pan out in the end when it came down to actually paying taxes next year. I am worried about that but still, this would be a huge blessing!!! That is just another issue but I would cross that bridge when I came down to it....I may have to get an accountant this upcoming year because my husband and I usually do our taxes ourselves but with this whole extra income, we may need some assistance as not to owe. Anyways, congratulations on your pregnancy!!! I was preggo last year the first time I applied and was let down so badly when I did not get it, but I know for a fact I filled out the application wrong. I put I worked at a NON DSH instead of a DSH so I was in the second ranking instead of the first (when I actually do work at the right type of hospital). One little wrongly answered question shut me down!

Suzy - Yeah, I had broken down and asked my HRSA rep when I called a few days ago too about the letters and she told me the same ole speal...Sept. 30th. Blah! If I were you, I would have probably asked GM about it...only because she seems to like you and your neat application package. I, on the other hand, evidently had a messy ole application package so she don't like me...ha ha. Just kiddin. But seriously, I would've probably broken down and asked her when you could expect your letter when she initially emailed you!! You had your window!! ;)....you have more self control than me, I guess. Keep me posted if you do, though!!

I honestly don't understand the taxes part. They take taxes out of the amount they agree to pay... Like when you win the lottery? Or are you saying we're going to owe money back at tax time?

Sully,

Congratulations! I too am 5 months pregnant and a little nervous about the maternity leave. I thought I read on the contract that you have 3 months of a leave before you have to extend it. I decided not to stress about it because I will do what I have to for the baby even if that means extending the contract. But that decision was just to keep my sanity. I will try to find the information again and post it here.

Again, congratulations!

short suzy- i am just as confused as you:) I think in the past people were burned from not taking out enough taxes and now maybe they have decided to do it for us... or we get hit twice. I am not sure. I think what my friend was warning me about was just being in a higher tax bracket...b/c it doubled her original salary. I guess I won't really know until I go through it myself.

And NN thanks and congrads to you as well. This is our first and we are pretty excited! lots of exciting things happening these days... Now if only this blasted hot weather in texas would go away all would be right with the world.

praying for a letter in the mail today! thank you Jesus... AMEN!

Congrats to u Sully on both the baby and getting the award! Yay!!! It really pains my heart to hear that the taxes taken out is so heavy, ughh. It basically sets it like the program only pays for 40% of qualifying loans then and possibly another 15-18% the third year if qualified. That really sucks because I dont understand if the governement is giving us the money how come they are taking back a share thru taxes, dont get that part. Anyhooo, guess its a blessing for us if we get it cuz its still helping us out with bills for 2 years. I plan to literally sit outside waiting for the mail lady today, i cant take the wait anymore . I plan to clear up my other debt within the 2 years if i get this award, pay off my credit cards and my car so that when time comes back around to pay the loans it wont be so tough on me cuz then i would have less bills overall. Hoping today will be the start of lucky days for us, pleassssse! :twocents:

I E-mailed my account representative yesterday. I of course received the..."I know this is causing much anxiety, but try not to worry about it. The only official award communication is by USPS, anything I could confirm via e-mail is not official; therefore, not certain. The award letters will be sent by the end of September,"

Bummer, I really wanted to get excited. Looks like I will continue running home to the mailbox. Technically, we could be waiting another 48 days which is agonizing.

mhazlew01 - hey do you mind me asking who your contact person is....because i have a funny feeling you have the same contact person as me and shortsuzy....there has been one or two different contact persons who have told nurses that they received the award (unofficially), but our unlucky selves got a certain attention person who tells us nada! good luck!

Amybarberrn- My contact person is Gloria Majors. Who is your alls? I have this sinking feeling we have at least another month to go before we find anything out.

Also, do we know for sure if we can apply the grant money in large amounts to one particular loan? I included both my private and federal loans, but if I were able I would use all of the money towards my insane private student loans. Is that possible? That is if I actually get a letter this year.

Mhazle- I think from what I have read from past posts and been told by people who received the loans. You can apply the monthly amount any way you see fit as long as the loans are qualified under the contract. I have also been told to keep meticulious records regarding payment so when it comes to applying for the 3 rd year or if you get audited you have CYA. I hope this helps! I too have a ton of private loans with insane interest rates. I would like to get those paid off post haste!

Mhazle - yep, that's her alright! Suzy and I have the same exact one. I really think she isn't going to tell us anything, but that other one, Richard C. has been telling their attention people the good news. I am hoping that her little way of "telling" us is by saying, "please try not to worry". Because she told me that and Suzy that. So, well, here's hoping!!!!

....and that would totally SUCK if we had to wait a whole other month of this!! Torture!!
