Needing a Live-In nurse for my Mom, does medicade cover it?

Published

Basically my mom's Hip broken due to her radiation and chemo.

She is healthy but unable to do many things.

She lives in GA and needs a live in nurse because she does not want to go to a nursing home.

Does medicaid cover this?

Where do I apply and get this from?

Any information would be great.

Again she does not want to go into a nursing home.

I'd try contacting Medicaid.

Call a home care agency in your area to find out if their home care staff or live-in nurses are covered by Medicaid or Medicare.

The intake personnel at a local home health agency would be a good source of information on this as they deal with medicaid reimbursement on a daily basis. Basically the physician signs off on it if she meets the criteria.

Do you realize what a live in nurse would cost? No....medicaid will not cover that.

In Washington state, medicaid only paid for caregivers(live-out) to come to the home. You get only so many hours depending on the medical diagnosis and care needed. The more medical problems you had, the more caregiving hours you would get. I have never heard of medicaid paying for a live-in nurse.

If medicaid paid for this few if any people would end up in a nursing home. Medicaid only pays +/- 150$ per day for 24 hour nursing home care her in Texas. That is only a few hours of nursing care in the home environment. I wish they did though, the thought of having to put my father in one kills me and I work in a nursing home. Good luck in finding care.:heartbeat

I didn't mean to be rude....but i thought it was almost comical. Maybe you can help take care of Mom!

From what the OP wrote it doesn't seem any bit comical. Their mom is obviously going through a lot, which I am sure puts a lot of stress on them and they might not be in a position where they can take care of mom. A lot of people don't know the ins and outs of health care and have to ask.

The the original poster, I hope you find a solution for your mom and I am sorry for all your going through as well her.

medicaid, medicare, the government and taxpayers are only going to pay so much. bottomline, they don't pay for live in help if someone needs 24 hr help, they'll just pay to put them in ltc if they qualify (it's cheaper than 24 hr live in help and gets her 24 hr help, doesn't really matter what she wants or you want). if she qualifies, she may be able to get help at her house (8 hrs or so), but it won't be live in, if you or she want's live in help, someone else is going to have to pick up the difference ($$$).

Both of my parents had alzheimers. I left West Virginia and moved into their home in Washington state to take care of them. Dad died 4 months after I arrived. Mom lived for 8 more years. After Mom ran out of money, she got medicaid. Medicaid sent caregivers to help out during the day. It was hard for me to work and care for Mom. But then my best friend moved in too to help out with Mom and that was really great!!!!:yeah: I really lucked out. I wish you the best of luck too.

Yes, it was not at all comical. Working 72 hours a week to give her money and support her and my girlfriend; plus going to school. I'm not able to help her out as much as she needs.

Just seeing if I would be able to get like a minimum of 5 hours of help for her under medicaid daily.
