Need information about base rate pay for new RN (bsn)

Published

Hey guys!! I am about to enter nursing school, but now my dad is starting to ask me a lot of questions that I am not sure how to answer. Mainly, he wants to know what the base rate pay for a just graduated RN is. I need to know it for the states of TN and AL. Any responses would be greatly appreciated!!

Im not in TN or Al but close to TN - live in Tri state area TN GA NC, ASN RN are starting out around 20-21 base pay I think, I was able to start out a bit higher because I was an LPN for many years before becoming a RN, they counted my LPN experience when I started out. My understanding is that a BSN doesnt make much more than a ASN prepared nurse though : (.

Eh, if you don't live in a high cost area I've seen anywhere from $19-25/hr starting.

If you go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, they have salary info for specific regions. Although, I don't know if they just give an average or have any way of breaking down starting salary vs. experienced.

Those are usually the average salary for every level of experience. I think it's misleading for a lot of people. The average starting salary for my area is around $45,000, vs the $65,000 median for the entire profession

And not only does pay differ based on state but it also differs based on where you live. I live in Texas and the pay in Austin could be different from the pay in Houston, for example. It all depends on the cost of living.

Of course, some states will pay you higher, such as CT or CA, where nurses start at $40-$45/hr, but the cost of living in those areas are much higher.

There is usually no pay difference between an ADN or BSN...if there is it is minimal....like 50cents to a dollar.

You need to look at what area and in what facility before you can begin to narrow it down. I'm pretty much in the same category as Georgia Peach, however in the area that I work and the position that I have, the pay is $36-40/hr base pay with NO benefits. But there again, years of LPN experience and 3 years RN experience all or mainly in med/surg in the right facility that is in the right location will give you this rate of pay. If I stay in this position once I complete my BSN degree, the pay will be NOT ONE CENT MORE, even going to the units! Again, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION within a specified LOCATION.
