Big favor to ask for anyone who replies. I'm a RN student and I'm looking for a job at our local hospital. I got a call not long ago and they wanted me to do a preliminary screening first over the phone. I did this and she asked why do I want to work there, what is your idea of excellent customer service. Well needless to say I did not get the job. Today I got another call for a similar position and I now have another screening this coming Monday. I really, really want this job. They must like my resume b/c they called me twice. So my question to all u lovely fantastic folks one Allnurses...what do I say to guarantee a job with this hospitAl????? Advice please!!!!!

I know telephone interviews are hard and I know I get really nervous, but if you are that interested in the job I think you should be able to answer those questions on your own.
Good luck!
Thnx...I'm sure I can do it...just really nervous and don't want to screw it up this time around!
I know it can be had on your nerves!
How about writing down important things you want to say so you won't forget. Or, if you know the types of questions they are going to ask then go ahead and answer those and write them down too. That way you aren't fumbling over your words because you are nervous.

Research about the hospital on their web site for instance and if they have been in the news mention that you want to work for them because they are well known for whatever ie cardiac care, any new research or technology program they have started or even a human interest feel good story about them or their nurses, staff that you aspire to work for that hospital.
Re customer service I would mention that I would treat the patient as a member of my own family, something heartfelt, about the personal touch, an example that shows empathy and compassion for instance and what made you decide to go into nursing ie a personal experience of yourself or family member or something special you read or saw on TV or news. Something positive and honest.

We all can use some help some time ... noting wrong with that and nothing wrong with asking. I like what brandy said about heartfelt but I don't know. You know they want a certain answer. Research nursing customer care and see what the big guys are saying about it. I'll bet you get some real good tips you can use at the interview.
This never was an issue before (customer service) and I think it's a little on the moronic side. We're suppose to RNs not hotel concierges. Also, what the poster brandy said about researching the hospital is a good idea as well. Good luck to you.

I think Jess hit the nail on the head. Telephone interviews are so nerve racking to begin with, so being prepared with written notes helps tremendously.
Do you have a friend that can call you so you can reheorifice? Sounds silly, and you might get the giggles, but at least you can do a 'cold run' with a friend. You already know the pitfalls from the first telephone interview, so you will definitely be better prepared anyway.
Brandy made a GREAT suggestion regarding research. It would impress your interviewer if you knew and understood the hallmarks and goals of the hospital for the year.
Good luck to you!

That is great! Congratulations on two phone interviews. I agree with all the other suggestions and will make one more. I also always role play with my husband. He interviews people for his job and is great about giving me feedback. Find someone you know that has experience hiring and role play. Remember you want honest feedback not someone that is going to tell you what you want to hear. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Lol the ironic part for me....I was a hotel concierge and guest services mgr for 10 years before I became a nurse. It does come down to customer service in many ways, because if people aren't happy with their hospital stay, they can go elsewhere.

(I just deleted the beginning of a post about how people need to get over the negative connotations associated with the evil, demeaning term "customer service" when used in the healthcare context. How this is, in fact, a business, & patients, clients, consumers are actually customers, & how (@ OP) "exceeding expectations" and "showing initiative by assisting beyond job responsibilties" hardly seem like bad things, especially if retention is something your organization is concerned about. I'm tired of being so critical on this site, getting wrapped up in something or someone that I may not necessarily agree with, & going off on a tangent instead of addressing an OP's heartfelt questions or genuine concerns. So I won't do that, okay? I'll focus & be kind & tolerant & try to help instead of being a self-important jerk all the time, all right?)
Uh ...
Thank you very much to all who replied. I have written down numerous things to be prepared for this phone interview. I think I have some good stuff. I really want this job so I am determined to get it. I'm gonna WOW their socks off....lol! I hope. Thanks all nurses friends you are absolutely wonderful!

While reading this I was thinking about the term Holistic Nursing. In our jobs we are susposed to provide care for not just the patient but the family as well. I see this as customer service like. If your caring for the family as a whole then you are providing customer service:)
