Need Help with Abbreviations, Medical Terminology

Nursing Students Student Assist

Updated:   Published

Hi, I'm a Freshman nursing student and I'm working on my abbreviations and definitions for lab. You would think that they would give us things that we could find in our text book or our medical dictionary, but Noooo ;)

Anyway, I've been looking in my texts and even googling the terms and have come up with nada, so I'm hoping some brilliant soul from allnurses can help me out.

Can you tell me what these things mean or at least point me to a website where I can find them myself?

amb

amb cass (there is supposed to be a space after c and a s s but it didn't let me type it out)

as tol

str

Also, I'm having trouble finding functional position. Seems to be a rather simple term, but I found nothing about it in my texts.

Thanks in advance!

I'm starting my BSN program the first week of January & am worried about learning all the terminology. Thank you to everyone who has posted helpful websites!

Hi Idgy20004, I'm going into my last semester BSN RN program in January. I just wanted to let you know that you will be picking up the terminology while going through your classes. It would benefit you to know the basics before the program by googling "medical terminology". Hope that helps!!

Most nursing and/or medical terminology comes with learning the course work of a specialty. The book you have obtained, along with the prudent asking of questions, should give you all you need for a BSN program. Please do not over-obsess about this. Congratulations for getting in the program, BTW!

You just keep an open mind and never be afraid to ask questions about what you need to know or what is unclear (as in the lecture). Some may laugh; to them I only said it once : "At least I am not afraid to ask what you are all wanting to know and don't. Only fools suffer quietly."

Right back atcha!

It could be "no concentrated sweets".

Thank you. who makes these abbs and where you can find all of them.

Hi Everyone,

I was doing a drug round with my preceptor this morning and we had to administer a controlled drug. Since this was my first time doing this, my preceptor went through the process with me. We were looking specifically at Morphine. We had 3 bottles of sub-lingual morphine, two bottles were prescribed to specific residents, one bottle was BSO. Could someone please describe what BSO stands for? My preceptor mentioned that 'any of the residents can have it' but that didn't seem rational due to potential risks.

Thanks in advance for all replies.
