Hi there where do you work? I am a new grad in Norfolk, VA too, and found the ideal setting for new nurses.
Please e-mail me, and we will talk...

I have 2 suggestions for you:
1. Take out the name of the facility in your post ASAP.
2. Run out of there and get a new job ASAP. No reason to stay in a place where you are unhappy, with red flags popping up all over the place. There is a nursing shortage- you should have no problem finding a better job out there. Run!

I was shocked at how nasty some nurses can be. I am desperately holding my own, trying to get to the one year mark---10 weeks to go!--- where I will feel more better about myself as a RN to get another job. Then I am OUT OF THERE! I agree with the other posts. Nurses are needed everywhere, there is no sense in being misreable.

My first jobs were in nursing homes also and you describe to a T how the working atmosphere was. If I would have let the other workers influence me, I would have been unemployed. None of them would have supported me or my family. You have to learn to just go in, do your job to the best of your ability, and let them act how they want. Nothing says that you have to take them seriously. Many times groups of workers act this way, because they only want people like themselves to be working at a place. Don't let them walk all over you. Just do your job. Meanwhile spend every waking moment, seeking a job elsewhere. Send out your resume, make phone calls, answer ads, go in person to fill out applications when you have breaks. But remember this, if you can only find a job at another LTC facility, you will probably find the same kind of atmosphere. At some point, you will need to learn some coping strategies for being in the presence of poor coworkers. Otherwise, you will allow them to make you sick or unemployed. Good luck.

I am originally from Norfolk, although I have never worked there as a nurse. Two of my kids live in the area, so I try to keep up with the community. Why are you working in a LTC right out of school? You would probably do better in a hospital, and there are a lot to choose from in your area.

I just quit my job on a floor where many of the nurses ate their young! i was told to ask questions and when i did, my director told me I wasnt wanting the responsibility.....said it was "how" I was asking the questions?? so...I would say to a nurse, this is my problem, i think I should do this, do you agree? And STILL....I was told i needed to be more independent. i fwelt like i was damned if I did and damned if I didnt.......I got so many mixed signals. they tell me one thing and do another???? I finally had all I could take. It was like living under a microscope.........some of the nurses I thought were nice and asnwered my questions...after all, if youre not sure..ASK...turned out to be backstabbers. they were nice to my face but went behind my back to the director!!!!!!!! I finally QUIT! I tried my best to do my best. My patients were ALWAYS safe...I never did anything to hurt a one.......I just felt like I didnt know what they expected of me. when I asked i was told to take care of my patients and practice safe nursing...which i did.......yet, I gotten written up for stupid petty things.......like having med pages out of order.......which I have seen other nurses do on a daily basis........thats why you lok at EVERY page of your MAR before passing meds!!!!! I felt like someone had it in for me and it was time for me to leave. Ive only been a nurse for a few months. This job left a bitter taste in my mouth. i'm currently looking for another job. i dont even know what all is out there for nurses! I worked on a very busy oncology unit.......very acute patients...many were post-ops.....tumor debulkings and chemo perfusions, colon resections and fundoplications. Drains and tubes everywhere...I loved my patients and taking care of them.........it was some of the people that made it unbearable...........mixed messages and backstabbing. I'm brand new!!!!!!!!!! It was too much for me combined with being so new and learning my skills along with everything else on the unit. I pray someone will give me a chance somewhere. I know in my heart I am meant to be a nurse. i will be the best nurse ever when i find my niche.........how do you know where you belong? i like the hospital setting..maybe a place where the patients arent quite as acute and the unit less busy??? Help! where do I belong??????? After venting...........my point is.... RUN! And dont look back! You dont need the added stress of nasty people!

I think you might want to consider seeking a position in a large teaching hospital. Often there are interships available, and a preceptor that volunteers for that job, not someone who looks at it as just an added burden. Unfortunately, some people (not just nurses) are so bitter and miserable, they can't wait to pull the rest of us down into that too.
If your supervisor can't/won't help, then you need to get out. Usually *hit runs downhill. So if the person at the top has a bad attitude.....run awayyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Nursing does tend to eat it's young, but we're not all carnivores! :w00t:

I have had the most horrible experience with Nursing since I moved to
San Diego, CA Sept 2007. I cannot get hired. As soon as the Nurse who interviews me sees I have not done specific skills for about a year then I have wasted my time. I went to Nursing School for 4 years for this? Received a BSN and have a vast knowledge of Pharmaceuticals as I was a Certified Pharmacy Technician for 18 years before Nursing School.
I have come to the conclusion, experience is the number ONE priority and degree is secondary. I am so very irate with the Nursing profession I could scream. What is this shortage about? Where is it? If they need Nurses so bad why will they not train? I am extremely willing to work. Very wiling to learn. I do enjoy Nursing. But in the last 7 months I have really and truly and have begun to boycott this profession. I am a male. For some reason when a female interviews me I feel looked down on because as one put it "you really did yourself injustice when you were a spinal cord injury Nurse." We have Sharp Hospitals here in San Diego, CA. That is a dull subject. Anyhow she hired me but constantly berated me and watched me. It was horrible. I have no respect for this woman. She was quite nice when I showed interest in the Hospital but then would constantly make snide remarks. What is so funny, staffing continues to call me today from this Hospital when they are short in MED/SURG. I have not been employed there since July 2008
I could go on with it but the bottom line is, and all students need to read this: Experience is primary, degree is secondary. That is so pitiful. So you students need to student hard and work, if you're able while in school (I didn't), and get as much
MED/SURG, TELE, Critical Care experience as possible. If you don't forget all this studying you did! You've wasted your time.
Recruiters call me all excited and when I tell them it's been about 2 years since I worked ICU I never hear from them again.
It's a joke. More Will Be Posted. I have got to go scream !
