NCLEX-RN Exam on April 2011, need motivation?

Published

Hello Nursing World,

I finally decided to make an account after coming to this site almost everyday, for the past several weeks, to research nursing topics. It has helped me greatly and Thank you all for you contributions!

I recently graduated from an ADN program and I am soooo happy and grateful that I was actually able to complete it because it was the MOST challenging experience I have EVER gone through in my entire life. I have to admit, it has been extremely hard to get back to the studying for the NCLEX. It's like my brain rejects the information every time I try to pick up a book and do questions... my brain says: "oh, no not you again." hahaha.... ugh! :uhoh3: Never the less, I know I have to prepare for this beast which brings me to this post. I was thinking... Why not challenge some of you who plan on taking the NCLEX late? March/early April 2011? :yeah: What do you guys think? Maybe we can message each other here by the end of the day and share whether or not you met your daily goal. For example, I have 2 books (lacharity and Davis Q&A) and I plan on doing 100-150 questions a day until my test date. Even if I do 20-25 in increments throughout the day, the point is to do them daily. Then I will come here and share how my day went. That way we can motivate each other through this excruciating journey.

Whaddayasay huh?!?.... I plan on starting this Sunday... Let me know if any of you guys are interested, I would love to motivate and be motivated by you guys... We need to get together and tame this beast! Lets do this!!!!:lol2:

hi

i have a question here.....tomorrow m going to start with my Q practice from kaplan Q bank ....m wondering which one would be better ::: taking the test from each content area or from all the areas....

i will rally appreciate ur help...thank u......

I use to do them all together.

I would have done them all too... I bought the qbank 2 days before I took the NCLEX RN..

What I hate about Davis is that it has waaaay too many SATA. I only take 30 question quizzes at a time and i get anywhere from 8-12 SATA everytime...and I almost NEVER get them correct because of mostly 1 option (I either shouldn't have chosen or should've...mostly the latter). And I feel like some of questions purposely try to deceive you...like a SATA that asked about what to monitor for in an adult patient w/ diabetes, who just had a cast put on for a femur fracture. Not straight up because of course you have to think about their circulatory compromise, which is cool because I saw that right away...but then I selected "vascular necrosis," and got the entire question wrong because, they're explanation was "the patient is at are at risk for avascular necrosis" (yep, and they italicized it and all). There is no such thing as vascular necrosis, so what's the point of that? Just to see if we can literally remember EVERY terminology we were taught? Seriously

Funny thing is that I ace the SATA in ATI and Saunder's...Davis is just retarded I tell you. It is not straightfoward for the most part...it literally tries to trick you on most questions.

Sorry to ramble :)

When did you reschedule to take your exam?

Hey Takiyah and Crayam81 ...I just wanted to update you guys I PASSED my NCLEX RN on the 27th!!! I was praying for you Crayam81 and came to find out you rescheduled..I still wish you luck!!

Takiyah Davis is a good book to practice, but I also like Prentice Hall and of course La Charity...I did randoms in both cd's and would switch when I got bored. Davis prepares you for alternate format and most of the time i got those wrong, but the NCLEX SATA were very easy....mines were straight forward signs and symptoms or complications associated with the disease...Towards the end of your studying you might wanna pick up Lippincotts alternate format questions and do them..so of the questions were very similar. at first I was hesitant to use it because they seem a lil easy but like i said they were similar...I did mainly Prentice hall toward the end of my studying and am glad I did...ITS ALL OVER I CANT BELIEVE IT I AM OFFICIALLY A RN!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!:w00t::rotfl::thankya: GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!!! YOU GUYS WILL DO GREAT!!!!

OH and Prentice Hall pharm chapeters are great to understand..it has this great memory aid boxes in all the chapters and are pretty much dead on....I had 209 questions...Most of my test seemed like it was Priority and infection control. I swear the last 50 questions were all further assess priority and infection control...I had 4 drug calcs spread out throughout the test(easy)...get this I had 5-6 meds and I knew them all...only killers were priority and infection control...guys know that like the back of your hand..I didnt pay much attention to them thinking I had a good grip on it so study the La Charity book well..there are 18 chapters..I think i did 4 and how I wished I would of done more because they were similiar. Oh i had a few milestone questions, one peds, 1 maternity a lot of med surg on endocrine and GI and 4-5 psych questions, recognizing diseases and therapeutic communication...Overall when I left I knew I did well, but then I thought about the question # and was like crap I probably didnt...then the agonizing 48 hour wait even with the good pop up....basically NCLEX wasnt easy but didnt seem that difficult either....its doable, so dont let people scare you about the test, thats what happened to me the first time and it was unnecessary. Its unpreparedness that makes it seem difficult. FOr content I used Illustrated guide and then looked at some chapters in SAunders but just the pyramid points. Oh and remember everyone's test is different. If anyone has any questions let me know and I will be more than happy to get back to you. My dad told me before when I went in you can only taste what you put in your mouth(sounds funny in English I know) but he was trying to say what you give is what you get..GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL AND GOD BLESS!!!!

SOrry for the crazy long messages and they might seem vague because I just wrote my train of thought. JUst wanted to clarify I did questions from PRentice Hall and used Illustrated guide for content...looked at the pharmacology, tubing, IV chapters in the Prentice hall book...Hope this helps.

Oh and I did 100 pages of random facts, just skimmed through and highlighted what i didnt know...then look at it before i went to bed...it was really helpful...ok i am gonna stop posting posts like a mad woman...GOOD LUCK!

A big Thank You to all of you for posting your troubles and triumphs for all of us to learn from! And congrats to those of you who recently got the good RN Pop up!!

I was wondering if you all paid for the Kaplan QBank on your own, or was it included in your school stuff? I'm trying to decide if I should just study on my own, using the books you all have suggested (i.e. LaCharity, NCLEX 4000, ExamCram), or should I fork out the $ for a Kaplan review course? Or just the Kaplan QBank?

Let me know what you think!

Thanks!

Awww it'smynurse,

Hey Sparklegirl_007,

I will be completely honest with you... you will get different responses to your question because they all pretty much work great. And there are so many resources out there that soon enough you will fine yourself studying from different ones and becoming overwhelmed, I know most of us did. lol

I think, regardless of the option you choose, you have to make sure you are ready to give 100% of yourself to it, and stick to one at a time until you understand what it is trying to teach you. For example, if you get LaCharity than just stick to it until you get a hang of answering all those questions THEN you move on to the next, if you'd like additional info. Personally, looking back I would choose one that has it all in one... content, concepts, questions, strategies, etc.... NCSBN learning extension seems to have it all and its made by the same people that make the NCLEX exam.

What really worked for me was the Kaplan Qbank along with the NCLEX-RN Kaplan book that elaborated on the strategies, I was literally hooked on it. (I paid for it on my own) For some reason DAvis Q&A made me depress, lol... Didn't even get through the first few pages. I hope you find something that suits you well and I wish you much success on the exam! :)
