NCLEX review

Published

Hello guys...

I am preparing my nclex exam but most of the information is not sinking in to me... I am afraid i might lose it again the second time. Any good applications or study materials that u could suggest would be a very big help. Thanks.

Check out my post nclex advice! I hope it helps!

The question is too broad. Have you determined your weaknesses? what did you use to study the first time? How do you learn best? Do you need content review, test taking strategy or both?

i think its really important when you're reviewing to make sure you're understanding the content and not just memorizing (although certain information, like lab values, you do just have to memorize) for example hyperthyroidism can cause you to loose weight and have an increased sensitivity to heat. instead of just memorizing that information understand why...the thyroid gland is responsible for metabolism. if its hyper--that means metabolism is increased and when that happens you lose weight. the person is sensitive to heat because again, your metabolism is increased meaning your body is working overtime

once you know and understand basic information such as this it helps answering questions....for example if you had a question what should you do for this patient

1) give them extra blankets

2) give them extra finger foods

3) take their temperature

4) provide oral liquids

go through each answer choice. 1- you wouldn't give them extra blankets because they're sensitive to heat. 2) makes sense to give them extra finger foods because their metabolism is in overdrive and they're losing weight 3) important assessment but not as important as making sure the patient is maintaining weight and 4) again patient needs calories not liquids

so answer choice 2 would be correct

once you understand one disease you can usually understand the other. what i mean by this is that hypothyroidism then is just the opposite (increased sensitivity to cold, decreased metabolism---gaining weight)

hope that helps!

i felt the same way when i was reviewing that i wouldn't remember anything but you'll be surprised how much you do retain. make sure you're consistently going over your notes/review book and doing questions/reading rationales to reinforce what you're reviewing

if you're a visual learner like me youtube videos, mnemonics, and pictures really help also!

Gohanzone, you can also check out my posts to see if anything I did can help you.

Goodluck :)

Thank you all guys. I just want some push in this because i dont want to fail again. If you have more tips let me know.Im watching youtube videos now.

Yes i am a very visual learner.

Bronze 2, thanks a lot... Do you have anything about growth and development? Im very poor on this...

You should do some questions 75-100 per day and read the rationales. Don't memorize everything except the lab values, ABGs, etc. know the vaccine being given to children at certain age. 1st thing 1st, have a calendar and plan your study days and which content you want to focus on or goals for that day and week :) you can't memorize everything on the book but just try to understand :)

Specializes in Maternal Newborn.

For growth and development, know milestones for babies/toddlers (ie. when would they say mama/dada, roll over, pincer grasp, walk, what toys they play with, etc. Also know for example adolescents are very conscious about their body image and peers are a significant influence. For the elderly what changes as you get older - eye sight is one thing (glare) and their metabolism/digestive system is more sluggish. Saunder's comprehensive book has info on development stages which is very helpful. The more questions you do all this will sink in, and you will find you can easily eliminate the "wrong" answers within NCLEX questions.

Best of luck! We're cheering for you.
