I was doing my regular questions and came across this questions
An order is written to give MSO4 100mg intramuscularly now , the nurse should:
A. Check the order prior to sending it to the pharmacy
B. Notify the physician for clarification of the order.
C.Notify the pharmacy that the order is needed immediately.
D. Gather the supplies needed for an injection
any takers,

thats morphione, u need to know how much p/kilogram to give, usually 0.2ml/k so even if u weigh 200lbs, you'd only give 18 ml
My rationale is that's way to high for an IM injection of morphine, and would want to verify that with the physician & another RN nurse..
Unless you are trying to get this patient into respiratory failure with that amount..

Great also another rationale for this is MSO4 is an abbreviation that is on the Joint Commission's "do not use" MSO4 can mean morphine or magnesium sulfate. Notifying the physician to clarify the order will prevent a medication error from occurring :) thanks for participating. i thought that was an interesting question and i had to share
