Nclex preparation and requirements

Hello everyone,

I am new to this site and I am hoping that many of my questions can be answered. All responses are greatly appreciated.

I am a U.S. citizen and I am currently studying in a nursing program in the Philippines. I will be graduating

this March 2012. By this time, I am trying to gather all the information I can which will prepare me and allow me to become a Registered Nurse in my home state of CALIFORNIA. To my knowledge, I have heard many stories that U.S. citizens do not have to take the NLE (Philippines). So basically they can take the NCLEX directly. I know that the NCLEX has been offered in the Philippines for several years now. So my question is would there be any difference if i would take the NCLEX in the Philippines compared to the NCLEX in the U.S.? Would the NCLEX in the Philippines be credited as the same? I've heard if i take the NCLEX in California, I would have to wait several months waiting for processing and paperwork. This is what im trying to avoid, so I am leaning towards taking the NCLEX in the Philippines.

Secondly, would anyone happen to know what specific requirements would be asked for

upon applying to take the NCLEX in the Philippines?

hi! i just took the NCLEX on nov 18, 2011 and passed, i'm now a CA RN.. im also a US Citizen and studied in the Philippines..

NCLEX no matter where you take it is still the NCLEX.. It doesnt matter where you take it.. Also the processing time is still the same.. i would only consider the time it takes the mail to arrive.. because Cali sends mail through snail mail so it takes around 3-4 weeks to get to the Philippines.. but its better to process it while your still in the Philippines, because Cali requests a lot of paper work especially if your foreign educated.. go to rn.ca.gov to check the requirements..

hi there.. like you I am a US citizen that graduated here in the Philippines last March 2010. I recently took my first nclex in Manila but sadly, did not pass. it doesn't matter where you take your nclex, as soon as you receive your ATT, it's up to you what Pearson Vue office you choose to take it in. I recommend you choose the Pearson Vue office nearest to you :)

The Philippines doesn't have a Board of Nursing for the NCLEX. What you first need to do is choose a certain Board of Nursing from the 50 states in the US, since NCLEX is US-based. Since you're from Cali, pick BON of CALI.. go to their website, and find out what the diff requirements are to make you eligible to take nclex. pass the requirements to them as soon as you can..

after a few months, you receive your ATT from the BON of Cali. Now that you got your att ready, register at Pearsonvue.com and then schedule your nclex date. It's up to you WHERE you want to take the nclex, so like I said, choose the Pearsonvue center nearest you :) once you've passed the exam, you become an official US registered nurse. with your license you can work at any state in the US, you just have to inform BON of cali that you want to work in another state if that's the situation. hope I helped..

NCLEX is a national exam and the questions regardless on where you sit it comes from the same pot. You have to register with a state once you have graduated and they may or may-not require you to either sit NLE or provide proof you are not able to sit it

I am a foreign graduate nurse too (UK), and I can say from experience, you should stay in the Phillipines after graduation and apply, in the meantime, working to build on your experience. The fact is, nursing boards across the US is slow, and you will be missing months of experience, which will go in your favor when you apply for a job here in the US, which is very competitive.

When I was returning home to the US, I called the FL board of nursing and I was told, oh you have a BSN, yeah, just come and take the test, you will not have a problem. I only worked 5 months after graduation, got to FL, and nothing was as I was told. There are so many red tape and hoops to jump through, long story short start to finish the whole process took approximately 18mths...........18mths that I could have been working and building on my experience.

Well I finally passed, and it took me 3mths to find a hospital gig, because the experience I had was so minimal and I had graduated 4yrs ago.

Experience teaches wisdom, if I had to do it again, I would have stayed in my graduating country, and do all my paperwork, because not only do you have to deal with the Nursing Board, there is also CGFNS, and no matter how you send in all they require, they will always write back to say we need this or that is missing............I would say about February, you can apply to CGFNS, and start the process, that will take 6 - 8 weeks minimum, before the nursing board will even look at your paperwork.

Good luck........and it is good that you are starting to think about this. For your revision, make sure you have your Saunders NCLEX-RN Comprehensive book, P/D/A by Linda LaCharity and know your core content, Hurst Review is great for that aspect, she gives you just what you need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam.

I know how it is when you just want to get back home, but you are almost there, and you dont want to rush it.........

@kazza: yes i totally agree with you that US hospitals are in need of RN's with experience..but I don't think we're capable of getting hospital experience here in the Philippines if we don't have a license for the Local Board. You have to be a citizen of the Philippines,or have a dual citizenship, to take the Local Nsg Board.. and based on what scan87 said, he is a US born citizen.

My aunt told me that a dual citizenship nowadays costs big money. I dunno,I should ask the embassy some time. hehe

sorry for digging up and older post, but wow, you're the first person from the ph that has gotten passed the either the concurrence or the insufficient hours that's been denying your fellow ph grads. notwithstanding the issue of being a us citizen (having your s/s# was golden), but the fact the ca bon gave you your att, without any problems with your school's submission of documentations! congrats!

if' you go to the international section, you'll see the frustrations and problems affecting everyone from ph to getting their approval to take the nclex. i was thinking maybe you could help out other's there in the various postings on how to help with their problems and offer some advice!

so none of your other classmates had any problems with getting their att? or did you graduate a couple of years before the strict ca bon enforcements started and began your application process more than a year ago or so?

Actually I graduated April of 2011. As soon as graduation i applied for eligibility in Cali. I was found eligible sometime around October. Then some of my classmates who took the Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam (NLE), before applying for CA BON were being denied. So I guess that I was just lucky to be able to meet eligibility before they had the new rule. My friends told me about it. That the MS and OB subjects would have to be taken in a CA accredited program, because the cases were not able to be completed within the specific semester such as MS and OB. So all in all, I was just lucky that I have applied before the new requirement was imposed.

Hello again to everyone!It's been about 5 months since my initial post here on allnurses.com

I appreciate all the comments and advice everyone has offered within the past few months.

So as of right now, I am reviewing at Kaplan for the NCLEX. From my initial post in December i stated

that I will be applying to become an RN in California. Due to various reasons, I have reassessed my options and

decided that I will applying to the BON in New Jersey instead. To my knowledge, as of right now the NJ BON requires both

the CES(credentials evaluation service) and an ENGLISH proficiency exam (TOEFL/IELTS).

1. For the CES requirements, i have already printed out the paperwork and all i need to do is submit it to my school. Since I am a U.S. citizen i will not be taking the local board (NLE). So one of the documents included states for REQUEST FOR VALIDATION OF REGISTRATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION. If I am not mistaken this particular document should be processed by the PRC, but since I won't be taking the local board I am a bit worried that if i send all my documents without it that it will be rejected and i would have to start the process all over again. I hear some people say that you would have to write a letter to CES stating why you will not be taking the local board in your country or should i just send it in to CES with them assuming that I am a U.S. Citizen.. So basically Im kind of lost on what to do in regards to completing the CES since i will not be taking the local board.

Hi, Im also a graduate(2009) in the PH, i took the local board exam and submitted my cases as one of the requirement, my problem is since im planning to apply NCLEX here in Ca.. Im pretty sure their gonna ask for my cases :( sad part is, i dont have a copy of that since I submitted them when i took the local board in the PH back when i was there. what should i do guys???? Can I just tell the bon of ca, that i already submitted those cases into the local board that i took before, or either way are they still gonna be asking for my cases?? Do i need to go back to the PH and do my cases all over again just as one of their requirements here in CA? :( can anybody help me in this matter please, i would really appreciate the reponse so much!
