NCLEX befuddled

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I took my NCLEX this morning. Expected the routine 75 questions and was rudely surprised by 259! To prepare for NCLEX, I took Kaplan and did their entire Qbank and all their Qtrainers with all %'s in the high 60's (one even a 72), read Saunders AND listened to Hurst audios.

Since I'm in CA., I'm not going to bother trying the "Pearson trick" because it sounds bogus. I find myself wondering why in God's name they can't just straight up tell you the day you take it! How annoying.

Anyway, just venting a bit and keeping my fingers crossed. What's done is done and I know I did the very best I could. Can't figure out what I could possibly have done differently or for that matter how/what I'll study IF I have to re-take.

Welcome to allnurses!

Where on earth did you get the idea that 75 questions on the NCLEX is "routine"? It's not.

I don't know if it helps but I am hearing of more and more people these days getting the full 265! Even people from my class that got all A's in nursing school got 265. But, most of my friends that got the 265 have been passing it too. Only one friend hasn't.

The statistical average number of questions received by a passing candidate in NCLEX-PN/RN is around 125. 75 questions is nothing more than the minimum number of questions for NCLEX-RN to determine pass/fail with a specific statistical significance; not a "standard"

I suppose I just kind of 'expected' 75 questions because I felt I was overly prepared for the exam. It was frustrating all the while expecting the exam to STOP, but instead it just kept spitting out more---some repititious questions too. Also, I've spoken to 4 classmates that all were shut off between 75-76 so I think I was imaging the same would happen for me today. Thanks for the encouragement----maybe I didn't entirely blow it.....gotta' wait (ahhhhhhh!!!!) & see.

I took mine today and got 150. I was totally hoping and praying for 75 and once it hit 76 I had to get up and take a break because I started to panic. I just told myself if it is still going then I am still in the game. But then it shut off at 150 and I left the testing center numb. My test was over 50% select all that apply so I was sure I failed. I did the Pearson Vue trick and got the good pop up. Hopefully the trick worked for me. But all kinds of people are getting odd numbers and still passing. I bet you did fine.

What is the Pearson Vue trick?!

I don't graduate til July so I'm trying to prepare myself for the NCLEX early!

Thanks for sharing your experience and encouraging words. I think there's a really good chance you are streets ahead of me....although I was getting some quirky "tough" questions. I'm leary of the Pearson trick because I've heard that it's not always trustworthy....do you mind me asking if you were brought all the way to the credit card page and it then wouldn't allow you to register?

It took me all the way to the credit card page, I put in my card number and I had to hit submit. At that point it gave me the pop up saying "Our records indicate you recently scheduled this exam. Another registration cannot be made at this time". I did a screen shot and sent it to a friend that got the same thing and had passed and she confirmed It was the same thing she got.

I am pretty sure this was right. Another weird thing happened. At the testing center once I was done I had to follow the TA out of the testing room where she had to do something on her computer to submit my test I guess and I saw a flash of my results. It was a very fast flash but I am positive I saw that it said I passed. I guess I will see soon. Usually in my state they do have the results up in less than 48 hours.

Oh! that's good to know the Pearson may still be a viable alternative way to find out results quicker than waiting for BRN to get off their hands ;O) Once again, Thanks for the info and a huge CONGRATULATIONS to you!

I wound up doing all of the questions and had about 60-70 of the more challenging questions (select all that apply, put in order, etc). I did all the extra questions, classes, etc just like you. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how many questions you got, it just matters if you are a nurse or not. Best of luck with you and your future career in nursing.

Thank you so very much for your encouragement. I'm still here biting my nails waiting to hear.
