Just a reminder to those who have high schools. Tomorrow is National Walkout Day for high schools to protest gun violence. I am all for students voicing their opinions on such a strong issue. What are your thoughts?

Philadelphia area schools mostly supported the event. Like what Garnett Valley HS did to support Parkland students:

From WPVI TV-

Local students take part in National Walkout Day

...Garnet Valley Schools in Glen Mills, Delaware County planned to take the day of action a step further, by recognizing the 232 lives lost in the school shootings since the Columbine massacre.

"Bookbags were donated. Students will have an opportunity to lay flowers on those book bags, they'll be wearing white voluntarily to represent life," said Marc Bertrando, Superintendent of Garnet Valley....

Why dont they protest rape, violent rap songs, violent video games, teen pregnancy and violence on the elderly, where were the protests after 911?

Actually I think , first they should pull up their pants.

A lot of people don't know this, but it's possible to care about more than one thing.

Your post reeks of, "I can't logically refute their actions, so I'll deflect to other stuff and attack their appearance."

None of these things are being sanctioned by the government of the country in which these children live. Gun violence is something that can be addressed, but it will take the cooperation of their government, a government which is now being put on notice by a crop of soon to be voters. Now, the government will need to decide who is more important, their constituents and the children of those constituents, or, the NRA. The government, as it stands today has chosen lobbyists and the NRA. These kids are exercising their right to put the government on notice that our "leaders" are failing them, and that they are not going to sit quietly as their lives continue to be put into jeopardy unnecessarily. I applaud them, and am grateful that they have joined a growing chorus of voices who have had enough. In the end, I don't know if it will do any good, but I respect their political awareness, activism and understanding of their rights. Many, many thanks to all of the educators and other adults in these children's lives who are supporting their right to speak out. These kids make me more hopeful for the future of our nation.

Then they turn 18 and vote out any politician in bed with the NRA.

So...what do you do from now to then?????

This what we're hearing from the students in our community as well. Not a "no more guns" rally, but more of a "our schools are not safe, something needs to change" demonstration.

Of course. There isn't one political official that I'm aware of, regardless of political party, who has called for, or is calling for confiscation of all guns. That's just a tired trope and inflammatory claim from those who transparently use fear to keep the money rolling into the gun manufacturing industry. That industry is out of control and has a ridiculous amount of power in our government. I personally have never owned a gun, or have known anyone who has owned a gun. So to me, the notion that in contemporary society a gun is a necessity or even a rational/safe option seems ludicrous. But, I have no expectation that guns are going to cease to exist in the U.S. Any claim that that is the ultimate goal here is ridiculous and is meant to stop debate.

They're kids. They're doing a hell of a lot more meaningful stuff than I did at 13. They don't hold a lot of political power, so they're doing the best they can with what they have. I'll cut them some slack for stopping off at the school nurse. They're still kids.

My 13yo came home upset that about half the walker-outers acted stupid during the walkout at his school and just used as an excuse to get out of class. And he talked about the cold, but he said that people in Michigan were doing it (we're in the South), so if Michigan can deal with it so could he.

It was 33 here, and that's considered balmy for our kids :) Most wore hoodies.

You participate in peaceful protests like this to let politicians know that they have a tidal wave of anger coming for them at the voting booth. And that it's easy to see which politicians are choosing the blood money of the NRA over children's lives and it's not acceptable. There IS power in numbers, in organizing, in civil disobedience. Will things change tomorrow? No. But these kids are making it clear they do have a voice and I think it's a powerful message.

I asked my son if anyone walked out at his school & he didn't know of anyone although he had heard a few people talk about maybe doing it. We are pretty rural. Like so rural that the first day of shotgun season is always designated a teachers institute day off because otherwise half the kids will skip out to go hunting, lol.

Oh ok, got it. Well that settles it. Everyone is safe now.

??? I literally said the exact opposite, I acknowledge that things will not change overnight. What is your solution?

I protested for civil rights and against the Vietnam War back in my younger days. Nothing happened overnight, but our voices were heard.

Wow, that was a lifetime ago!
