Hello future nurses,
I have recently applied to cohort 57 for National University in SD and was denied then decided to skip cohort 58 and get more study time in for the next cohort. I am not as nervous as I was in the first time I applied, people seem to be getting higher and higher teas scores which makes the program more difficult to get into, which is good it challenges all of us. When I took the essay i was super scared and didn't practice all the prompts, I didn't score well but scored better then I though I would have.
I am excited to hear from others that will be applying for the cohort 59 for July 2019!

Congrats to those that got in!! Unfortunately, I was not accepted to this cohort. I have an above average TEAS score and a competitive GPA, but keep getting low scores on the essay. I consider myself to be a good writer and I've prepared for the writing sessions. I have even scheduled time with the tutoring center prior to the exams. I directly answer the prompt, I keep it under 2 pages, and I follow the 5 paragraph format.
If anyone that has received a 4-5 on the essay could shed some light my way, that would be very helpful. My next application will be my final attempt I would greatly appreciate any guidance.
Thanks!
What is the content of your essay? Are you telling them what you think they want to hear, or are you expressing your personality and setting yourself apart? The former isn't so much what they're looking for. I personally treated the essay like an interview and flowed through it sort of conversationally and added quirks. I literally used the phrase "who the hell" in mine, lol. Be bold.

I stuck to the dreaded 5 paragraph format. I practiced each prompt several times until "I" knew that this would sell better and had friends and family go over all my writings and arguments. Don't be afraid to go Hollywood on it either because everyone is doing it. Be honest about your feelings and why you want to do it. I think the truth brings the best out of us. Going to the writing centre is also helpful as the people there are superb and helpful. But of course, none of this will help. Apparently the essays are being "phased out" and replaced by interviews. I think that's great.
