National University (San Diego) Cohort 56: October 2018

Published

Greetings! Wondering if there are others who will be applying/have applied for Cohort 56, which would begin October 2018!

If anyone is out there, hopefully this thread will a serve as a place to ask questions, provide insight/advice, vent, celebrate, wallow, etc. :)

For my situation, my prereq's are completed, and have recently completed the TEAS. I submitted the application (which was crazy quick and easy to my surprise), and am just waiting for a date to take my proctored essay.

Hope to speak with fellow applicants of cohort 56 soon!

I am applying as well to Cohort 56! I am kind of freaking out! I am really bad at essays and I am pretty good at taking exams. I am trying to practice writing essays, but every time I look at an example prompt I blank out.

Hi Maria,

I applied to this cohort as well. I saw that you took the test a couple of times but I'm wondering where we the rest periods between the tests. I haven't been to the forum since last year so I forgot most of what they said lol however on the NU website it says we can't take the test more than 3 times and with a 60 day rest period in between? Just seeing how you did so. You give me hope girl :)

Sorry for the late response... You are allowed to test as many times as you want outside of National. If you test at National you only get 3 chances to test. Check the ATI website and look for testing locations. There is no wait in-between ..if you want to test the next day after you already tested you can do that. Each time you are paying $100 though.. I thought it was worth the investment so I tested many, many times. I would wait one week then test... that way I could rest a bit then cram 3 days before my test date. You can do it !!! I know its a lot... I went from a 52% to an 86%....YOU CAN and WILL PASS... Good luck!! :)

I too thought I was in the clear for my essay! Make an apt with a tutor that is what I ended up doing and got a 4.5/5 on my essay!! After meeting with the tutor I had not idea how I got the score I did the first time. The essay is not what you think you need to write about.... Good luck !!

The essay was what I worried about the most as well but I recommend you make an appointment with the writing center to discuss ideas. When I did my essay the question I got was along the lines of what skills or qualities do I have that will allow me to be a good nurse. I just chose 3 qualities and said this is my quality ...this is how I use it and this is how/why it pertains to nursing. I highly recommend using the writing center, they were a huge help.

Congrats on getting in! For your essay, how did you format your name and title of the essay?

You don't do a title for the essay and when you save it you do so under your name.

Here are some sample essay prompts that have been used in the past.

* Compare and contrast nursing as a science and as an art.

*Describe a time you had to use interpersonal communication to work through a difficult work situation.

*What are your strengths and weaknesses?

*The nursing program is very rigorous, what would you do to ensure your success?

*Why do you want to be a nurse?

*What skills or attributes set you apart from the rest, and how will these help you while in nursing school or in your nursing career.

So I was a little late to the game and only focused on studying for the TEAS and didn't make an appointment for the writing center/ have not practiced any essay questions. I thought it was going to be fine since it's just an essay but now after reading all of the comments I'm a bit nervous and now it's too late to make an appointment since my essay date is Monday May 14th. Anyone else in the same boat or have any recommendations for how to practice on my own? Haha kindve freaking out a little over here now!

Someone from the cohort 55 posted this information and its basically the outline for the essay. Just make sure to refer to nursing. My essay question was about what qualities I had so I made sure to include examples as to why such and such quality is important to have in the nursing field. I got a 4/5 on my essay.

1. Introduction

a. Hook

b. Thesis - with three parts that you can break down in the body

c. Transition

2. Body 1

a. Give background info (2-3 sentences) on part 1 of thesis

b. Referencing example #1

c. Commentary (2-3 sentences explain citation) Why is it so important, etc.

d. Citation #2 Another example...

e. Commentary (2-3 sentences explaining citation) Relate to nursing...

f. Transition statement (transitioning to next paragraph)

3. Body 2 repeat for part 2 of thesis

4. Body 3 repeat for part 3 of thesis

5. Conclusion

How'd your essay go? I'm sure it went well!!

Essay I feel went well! Only thing I'm nervous about is that the proctor said not to go over 2 pages, and even after proofreading at the end and cutting my essay down to get my closer to the 2 page cut off, I was still about 4 sentences into the third page...anyone know if the graders will dock points for being over 2 pages?

My guess is that the graders will only read the first 2 pages, you could probably ask Elizabeth and see what she says.

For those who have taken the TEAS prior and don't plan on taking it at NU, do we need to submit our score prior to our essay date, or are we able to submit it day of?
