National University Accelerated BSN

U.S.A. California

Hi Everyone:

I am currently in the process of trying to get into national university's ABSN program for the fall 2009 at L.A location, anyone who has gotten into the program (both L.A and S.D) before or still in the process of applying, I would really appreciate any feedback from all of you guys about your general status (overall GPA, TEAS, etc) or your insight about this program overall. I feel like nowadays every nursing program becomes a lot more competitive than before, even for the private schools. So any feedback or comment would be very welcome from all of you guys, Thank you.

I forgot to answer...yes, all of the spots are lumped together for generic entry and post bachelor. Everyone goes through the same nursing classes together.

Thanks Elle Guerira and ExPharmagirl. Now, i been hearing about this "cohort" thingy. What is that? Also, as far as the essay, is it a random questions they'll ask that you really can't study for? I'm taking the eng II online in June at NU to complete my prereq. for the July app. deadline. I hope it helps in terms of writing a good essay that "they wanna see." I'm also taking the Biomed stat in May online as well. How's that class? Is it doable with 3 other classes i'm currently taken at a jc college which ends on the 2nd week of May?

I start in July 2010. It is the 23rd "cohort" or "group of students" to go through the program. I am in cohort 23. It their way of identifying which "class" we are in. So, instead of saying you are a July 2010 student, you would say your are a cohort 23 student. :)

I haven't taken the biomed class. I enrolled before it was the requirement, so the stats class I had with my first degree was fine. As far as the essay, just make sure you write clearly and concisely, and answer the question they give you. Have an opening and a conclusion!

Gotcha! Thanks expharmgirl for clearing that. I'm applying for the generic entry bsn. I heard that the generic entry and the accelerated bsn applicants are competing for the 20 slots? I'm attending the info meeting tomorrow, so i really hope thats not the case because wouldn't that lower my chances of getting in when people who are applying for the same slot as i am already have their rn license? I mean, wouldn't you think they'll only accepts people with their ADN going for their BSN? Cause if thats the case i may need to rethink about NU. I'm already paying over 2,000 to take the biomed stat and eng online for a month long just to apply early.

Ditto on what ExPharmaGirl said =]. You'll bump into the term when you take Biomed. I took Biostats as part of the core for my previous bachelors & there is a bit of math involved, but not too overwhelming. Here's a tip when doing the essay: never give a canned answer! My essay question was along the lines of "What motivated you to get into the nursing profession?" & it seems as though the trend with the essay questions revolves around the "why nursing" statement. Avoid stating that you want to be a nurse because you want to help people; that kind of response is dry & is such an expected response. I like to see the essay portion as a biographical statement of who you are, so as much as possible highlight your strengths, your weaknesses & what you have done to improve on that weaknesses. Mention any healthcare experience you may have whether as an employee &/or volunteer. Mention your accomplishments.

Nobody on my cohort has their RN license & besides, the LA campus only offers the generic & ABSN program. I think five people in my cohort are in the generic program & the rest of us are in the ABSN program. If I'm not mistaken, the RN-BSN program is only offered at San Diego & Sherman Oaks.

Ours are all post bachelors and generic entry in San Diego. They have a LVN-BSN too, but they aren't in the 50 that are accepted. They are stuck in at a different time of the year since they need less classes.

Thanks ladies. I really appreciate all the tips and advices you guys have given me. I'm really excited about this whole journey. I've been placed on the alternate list twice at the college i'm currently attending, but that won't stop me in becoming an RN. Prior to this, i was a surgical assistant for an Oral&maxillofacial surgeon for over 4 years. I decided to quit my job and persue a career in nursing because i've always wanted to become a nurse. I wish both of you guys the best in your studies and in the workplace. Good luck, future RN's!

Good luck to you too! Keep us updated! It sounds like you should definitely have something to work into your essay.

Today is my first day as a nursing student! SOOOOO excited!!!! :dancgrp:

For you National University San Diego Students.

I read on a post that NU students have no extern sites available for NU students? Is this true??

Overall, how are your experiences at NU??

I'm a NU student in Fresno, just started a couple of weeks ago. Are you talking about clinical sites?
