Our schools are closed tomorrow. We had over 1/2 of the students in the school district out today...the local doctors called the school administrator yesterday and asked them to close schools for the rest of the week. They refused to do so today, but even more schools called in, so now they don't have a lot of choice. Our hospital and nursing homes are both on "lockdown"...no visitors (unless the patients are nest death and ONE parent can stay with a child), no unnecessary personnel (students, orientees, minimal housekeeping, dietary, and office staff). The grocery stores are putting bottles of alcohol bases hand wash, Kleenex and trash bags all over...post office is HANDING postal patrons their mail instead of having them go to their PO boxes (after asking them to use the handwash)...cops and fire/rescue are wearing masks on EVERY contact with the community...the three doctor's clinics in town are requiring masks for all patients, hospital ER is requiring masks for all patients who are able to tolerate them...doctor's offices all put out public notices with their recommendations for flu care...sigh...anyone want to work for me tonight? LOL...still love my job. :-)

I heard that it's in full bloom in Texas, but it hasn't hit PA hard yet.

Up here in Ontario Canada we still have the entire ED wearing masks, ever since the SARS outbreak. The word is that they will continue to enforce indefinately. Security guards are there to "help out" anyone who doesn't like this idea. Hopefully it will help to contain any flu epidemic in our area.
Take care!

The flu bug has not hit Western Pa hard yet but believe it is here. I know from hard experience. Don't believe those maps that show no flu in Pa. They run a week or two behind. Interestingly enough, Bethel Park which had a bad outbreak last year is one of the first place in Allegheny County to have cases. I don't know if this is strickly coincidence or is there is connection. For those that are interested, yes I had flu shot. However, mine seems to be a milder case that is passing quickly.
Good for you, Oramar.
As for me, any flu shot makes me sick. So I can't afford to get it because I have COPD, and I get pneumonia like it's going out of style. And yes, I did have the pneumonia vaccine. So I do the next best thing. I stay home most of the time, and only go out when I have to.

My ICU is full of it and complications of it. My DH is still recovering from it...he felt like he wanted to die and actually came home from work (which he has done maybe twice in 25 yrs) He layed around in bed for days also very unlike him. When the flu symptoms started abating (aching, fever, feeling crappy) then the URI starts, and with a nasty cough that hangs on for weeks....
Ya'll stay well...so far I haven't picked it up from him, thank God.

The flu is very bad in Texas? My DH and little boy just left for Texas this morning for the holiday. I read that some schools were closed here in central Arkansas this week because of the flu.

I have several friends very ill right now with this flu. My sister in NW Ohio has been sick all week with it. I am considering getting my flu shot now.

We're in the Nebraska Panhandle. We're seeing tons of flu in the ER. Monday night, 5 of the 25 patients we saw from 1700 to 2200 had something other than the flu. Tuesday night was a little better, but we're still seeing lots fo flu symptoms. The one local radio station is doing announcements about what symptoms are, what to do about them, etc. Also, the doctors are strongly encouraging people to try symptomatic care at home before coming to the clinic or ER. The one local pharmacy had to get a supply of Tamilfu and amantadine shipped overnight because they are so overwhelmed with prescriptions for it. Lots of sick people still running around...hope everyone is better by Monday so the kids can go back to school! :)
Frances,
No flu shot?
Alergic to eggs
If not then a half or quarter shot then followup with same in 2weeks works for most asthmatics and I did do this one year for a leukemia soon to transplant patient about 5 years ago.
He is still alive and had the bone transplant and is back to working in EMS.
