So today was my 2nd lecture. It's weird how my whole mood changes the moment that pencil is on my notebook. (Yes I use pencil because I like to erase) My instructor is amazing.
What I find annoying is when the classmate start to get side track by asking questions. Some are really interesting but then it gets personal or it gets to be opinions or commentse than having questions. It starts to have this ripple effect and then all these hands go up and we get off track for a good 20 mins. I'm not saying they are stupid questions. I feel like some people should hold off their questions (or comments) at the end of class on their own time. Because I feel as if that 20 mins was taken away from me. Then I start to notice my instructor starts to talk super fast because she is trying to catch up with the time. In which it gets hard for me to take ntotes because she says it so fast.
Today I learned about Nursing diagnosis Assessment, diagnosis, plan of care, implementing, and evaluation (lol i can't believe I remember that tbh)
We had a case study and list examples of subjective and objective data
We also saw a video that showed us how we are suppose to talk to a patient that has anxiety/ stress. That was very interesting.

I can totally empathize with the "rabbit trail" annoyance. I've been known to metaphorically slam my head into a brick wall over lecture hijacking. I want to come to class. Then I want to go home. In between I'd like to cover ALL the material at a reasonable pace, and hearing about your cousin's aunt's dogs hysterectomy when we're talking about colitis kills me. But that's just me and my pet peeve.
And it's going to happen in any classroom setting, so I suggest finding a way to distract yourself :-)
And also yay for ADPIE! I remember being so bored in fundamentals and now I realize how absolutely important all of it is to our practice - not exciting to read or hear lectures over, but oh so important.

We haven't had an issue with that, yet. In one of my classes we were having a discussion that apparently was taking too long and she cut off the discussion. It's times like that when I wish they'd let us continue to voice our thoughts/opinions and let us go through the very detailed powerpoints on our own.

I can totally agree with the obnoxious questions. I understand that some people have questions and there are some very good ones brought up (that I am not brave enough to ask) but in the past week some of questions people said out loud make me wonder about their logic and quiet possibly their sanity.
Example: one girl today asked if the simulation people we use are clones of real people because our professors encourage us to treat like real patients.
We are only one week in so I can only imagine what sorts of things will be asked.

As far as trying to keep up with the instructor while she lectures, invest in a voice recorder. iPhones have that option built in but that seriously saved me many times!!

There is always someone who has to comment on everything the instructor said. There have been times I have been able to complete my homework during "rabbit hole" days. That is the one thing I am not looking forward to when we return.

I understand your frustration, I hate those questions too. That I why I always bring a book to class and whenever the sidetracking starts, I just continue on my own. It really helps.

Some conversation is good for learning and GREAT for people who really learn well that way, but not everyone does so there needs to be a balance. I personally come to class for information on the topic, not hours of the drama of everyone's personal lives or personal tutoring that could be done later. When things move to slow, I want to throw things and muzzle people. :-pBut that's also my own issue unless it gets to the point of neglecting the material we're supposed to cover, so I bite my tongue and numb my Brian with my ipad.

OMG - just wait - it gets even worse. When you get in to clinical/disease management... there is always someone who either has it, thinks she is getting it or has family members who have/had it - LOL.
Nursing instructors may not have much formal training in classroom management because the minimum requirement is an MSN - which probably did not include much (or any) education-related classes. Large schools & universities provide this training as part of their faculty development programs but it may be a hit-or-miss proposition. So be kind to your instructors. They are doing the best they can. More experienced faculty know when & how to cut off these extraneous discussions and get everyone "on task" once again.

YES! I am experiencing this too. This is my first semester of nursing school, and I think everyone is just so excited to learn as much as possible that they are getting ahead of themselves with all these questions that don't really pertain to the basic things we are learning. And it always seems to be the same person that starts the "red herring". Believe me, sometimes I wish that we could just restrain her hand, and go on with class! Don't get me wrong, I love when people ask VALUABLE questions that are really helpful to the lesson, but seriously! I feel like if people actually thought about their questions, and used some common sense before asking them it would save us all some time.
Wow thank goodness I wasn't the only that got annoyed by this! Feels good to know others can't stand it either. I wish my program allow us to use voice recording but they said no. You guys provided me with some really good tips to do during this "rabbit hole" time and I will bring in the text book next time and start reading on my own. And again it's not asking the questions that bother me its getting off track and wasting time that kills me! Whenever I have a question I have a separate handy dandy little notebook and I write it down on that. Then I either e-mail or ask in person during my own time.
My instructor is hands down amazing! And she takes time to answer all these questions, which shows me she wants everyone to understand :) she set the bar so high for the other instructors, I hope they are just as good or even better!
