Muslim nursing students

Nursing Students General Students

Have any Muslim nursing students had problems wearing a hijab to class or clinical. I am worried about being asked to take mine off for class.

I did't think of that. I am new to wearing a hijab and have yet to figure out all the different ways others put them on.

How did you cover your head before wearing the hijab?

My understanding from Muslim nurses at my hospital is that modest dress depends on the culture of the woman in question. Some wear long sleeves others don't , some wear head coverings others don't. Our Mennonite nurses have the same approach.

Are your views of "strict" observance based on culture rather than religion? I mean I know nurses of Bosnian and Turkish heritage who are quite observant and don't feel they are disrespecting their religion by dressing in modest attire and not wearing hijab. Some wear their hair in buns and a kerchief covering to comply with headcovering.

How does your Iman feel about you working in healthcare and caring for male patients? Is he influencing your dress code?

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PACU.

It isn't going to matter what the school says, she will have to abide by the clinical sites infection control rules. I am not trying to be difficult, but like I said, all of our Muslim staff wear the shirts to the elbow under their scrubs. You can wear a jacket as long as you are not performing patient care.

OP, before you apply to schools you should visit them and ask about their policies and the ones of the hospitals they do clinicals. I would hate to see you get to a place for clinicals and be td you can't work on the floor because you can't abide by the dress code.

I wore a ball cap or bandanna. I covered up way before I become Muslim. I am coming from a religious and not a cultural stand point. The Qur'an says women should cover all but hands and face. No one is influencing my dress code. I haven't been to an Islamic center in years.

I can only afford the 2 year tech school in my town. I have no idea who to talk to about it. Everywhere I have been in town I have seen nurses in long sleeves. I don't necessarily stay here after graduating school. If I go to school here for nursing.

Specializes in Pediatrics, Emergency, Trauma.

Why don't you talk to the school about it???

They would have more information about dress code and their requirements if that is the the school you plan on going to.

I don't know who to talk to. Every other time I had questions the school ran me around in circles, didn't answer my calls, never called back. I have found it isn't easy to talk to the school.

Then I would hesitate to go to that school. Is their a community college by you? And have you looked into financial aid?

I have looked into financial aid. No there isn't. My problem with community college is finding housing.

I know you said that you aren't really interested in nursing but that your family wants you to pursue it. Could it be you are just looking for excuses not to go into nursing? Just something to think about.

It's not excuses. I was upset when I said that. The nearest community college is 5 hours away if not more. Housing is to expensive for me to afford hence why I am living at home.

Are you just phoning the school? Or is there an academic advisor that you could call on? Maybe pop into the registrar office and ask face-to-face? If you know someone who goes to that school (not necessarily for nursing) maybe they could help you find the right persons with whom to speak.

I have gone in. I have asked others that attend school there. Even some of the professors, they weren't sure who to talk to. The registrars office has ran me around the most,
