Have any Muslim nursing students had problems wearing a hijab to class or clinical. I am worried about being asked to take mine off for class.

Then definitely find out from other Muslim nurses what they did to overcome the challenges. I work at a University with a medical school, PA program etc..... lot's of Muslim's here who wear their clothing or a modified version so it can be done.

I know it can be done.

I'm muslim and cover and wear hijab when I go to work. I'll tell you what I wear and why and then let you make the decision on what you want to wear!

First I wear a modified hijab so it can't be pulled off. I work a variety of units and some patients may be drunk , others mentally unstable, babies, etc, all may and have tried to tug at my hijab, but the way I have it , it's more difficult for them. I wear a white scarf tied in the back with the ends tucked under and a turtleneck. It keeps my hair covered and a good part of my neck.

Next I wear a regular scrub top with a long sleeve turtle neck or t-shirt under. I used to wear baggy scrub pant because , as a muslim I was taught a woman is not supposed to show the shape of potentially appealing parts like the thighs, chest, behind. Fairly recently inshallah I discovered a uniform store onlince called uniform advantage which sells ankle-length skirts for cheap.

They're easy to move in, durable, comfortable and come In may colours.

And last I wear regular gym shoes or running shoes.

Hope this helps.

I will add that sometimes you have to push your sleeves up so they don't get in the way with some tasks. I don't like doing that but I think Allah understands, and as soon as the task is finished my arms are washed and the sleeves come back down :)

You will be a good nurse, wear your hijab proud. Ignore the naysayers and people who try to discourage you. I have worn hijab since I could walk (we believe in starting early) and have found jobs and even people who not only understand but appreciate the way I dress.

Allah will provide if you take the steps forward he will guide the way :)

I want to be a nurse saying I didn't was my way of coping with the fact I might not happen.

Well, if I wanted to be a ballet dancer but refused to wear toe shoes, I would have to decide whether that was a stopper for me, because it would certainly be a stopper for performance of the duties of a member of the corps de ballet. Likewise, if wearing sleeves that permit safe infection control measures is something you won't do, then that's a stopper for being a nurse. Your choice. Just because you want something doesn't mean you can have it. Perhaps Allah has something else in mind for you.

asalaamu alaikum wr wb and hey all!

well I am now officially a Nurse...no longer a Nursing Student...I graduated this summer. I also work as a PCT on a acute and specialized unit. I cover and covered in NS and I cover at work and will continue to cover once I work as a RN...

I will enshaAllah read this entire thread later or sometime this weekend and will reply as needed but I can say covering is really *not* a big deal...esp as a Nurse. The good thing about Nursing is its a female friendly profession and there is a LOT of diversity amongst Nurses! There are other Muslim nurses who cover as well as a few orthodox/hasidic jewish nurses in my hospital who wear long scrub skirts and kerchifs along with some orthodox Jewish male nurses who wear the hat and some really strict Christian Nurses who wear skirts as well.

Sure Ive had many odd comments and questions but its also very educating and most people really do not care! One upside is a skeezy patient may be skeezy to every other Nurse who walks in his room but you! LOL...

I go for the Jersey shaylahs...hijab-ista has the BEST and most comfy ones and you can use a steth with it...and scrubs...just buy a size larger, get the baggy style and nip a thin shirt under. not a huge thing...

You know, there will be patients who don't want a fat nurse, a male nurse, a tattooed nurse, a nurse with a certain skin color, etc. as you can see above, others have succeeded before you. You have every right to be a nurse. Intelligent people will see you and you can't fix those who will judge you only on your religion or a hijab. Most places I've worked have allowed long sleeves, at least in some patient care areas. You decide if you will be a good nurse, it is not determined by others. Remember, not all nursing occurs in the hospital!

School, as others have mentioned, may be the challenge.
