MUSC Accelerated BSN Spring 2017

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm a pre-nursing student in Charleston, SC hoping to apply for Medical University of South Carolina's Accelerated BSN program for the spring of 2017.

I'm currently completing the pre-requisites at College of Charleston, which doesn't have it's own nursing program.

I'm going to be applying with around 75 hours including the 60 hours of pre-reqs, and expect to have a GPA of about 3.8.

I'm 19, and I'm planning to apply this summer at the end of my sophomore year, but I'm worried about my chances without a previous degree and some experience working in healthcare. I'll have a good number of hospital volunteer hours, but that's it.

Is there anyone who's currently in the program right now, or has a applied before? What do you think my chances of getting in with my expected GPA and just the pre-reqs are?

Thanks!

Kiki, I was wondering if you could share your stats about how many volunteer hours you had?

Also I would like to know if the volunteer hours have to be recent of can they be from another time.

No, you don't have to be CPR certified. However, if you are accepted then you will have to get it before classes. However, for our cohort some of the 4th semester students hosted a CPR class for a really cheap cost.

Hey Y'all, I have also applied for the '17 Spring class. I am beyond nervous as they are an "unforgiving" school when it comes to grades :( I have a 3.89 in pre-reqs, 3.95 in science pre-reqs, but a 2.79 cGPA. I really bombed college my first go-round 10 years ago. But I since joined the military and obviously turned things around for my self (graduated with my AAS from my last school with a 3.89 GPA). I have no medical experience except for 8 hours of shadowing, and I have almost 200 hours of volunteer work (not medically related). Do you know if it matters that the volunteer hours aren't related to medicine? I have 3 great references and from what I have been told a great essay. But, at this point, I am expecting to not get in as the cGPA is supposed to hold so much weight in the decision making. I am looking into trident as a back up just in case. I also just received an email stating that they are moving me from in-state, to out-of-state since I have only lived in Charleston for 15 months. I am having to petition to reverse it by providing loads of info. Not to mention my military spouse whom is stationed here. Anyone hear of people getting in with less experience/grades?

Hi everyone!

I graduated from MUSC's Accelerated BSN program this past May and will be starting the DNP this fall. I will say this, we have had loads of students who did NOT have a lick of hospital-type experience. We had people from all walks of life: military, older individuals, some who were LPNs, master graduates in other fields, EMTs, etc etc. Musc would prefer that you have experience (either volunteer or work related), but they like to see consistency. So your volunteer or work experience doesn't have to necessarily be health related. They generally want someone who can be the total package, which is why there isn't a perfect cookie cutter idea of what characteristics and experiences one should have.

Do your best on your applications, put your best foot forward and present yourself in the best light. Good luck to all. This is an exciting time!

Edited to add:

1) Admissions for the Spring are generally much more easier to get into than the Fall start.

2) For anyone who's close by MUSC and wants to keep track, here is the website to do that: https://mainweb-v.musc.edu/applicationstats/nrstatus.htm You can only view the chart if you are using one of MUSC's computers. You can go to the MUSC library during normal business hours (if you don't already work there and have a badge to get in after hours) and use the computers in the lobby to check. This kept me sane while waiting for official notification.

Thank you for your advice for all us hopeful applicants! I recognize your name from reading through a thread from a previous year, and it's encouraging to hear from someone who's been through the process and knows what it's like. And that link to view application stats will definitely be helpful!

No problem! Yes it's nice to see someone who's gone through it and survived lol. It will be a really quick 16 months. Get ready! If you have any more questions I will be happy to help.

Thanks for the info.

How long did it take for you to hear back once you applied.

I am having a really hard time completing the essay. It is so hard to write in 100 words or less. Does anyone have an suggestions on what to write about? Are they looking for your experience (even though you submit your resume and experience separately)? I just cannot think of how to begin.

Hello,

I'm also in the process of applying for Spring 2017. I applied for priority admission and am super nervous about the upcoming deadline, since I'm still waiting for 2 professors to complete their recommendations. All of my references are in California and email is my only communication with them since I'm already living in Charleston. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know if I can still apply for regular admission if I don't get my references turned in by the August 15 priority deadline? I'm really stressing out!

Here are my stats:

cGPA-- 3.78

Pre-req-- 3.93

Science-- 3.75

BA in Psychology from SDSU

no work experience, only volunteer work and prior military

Good luck to everyone!! It's an exciting and nerve-wracking time for sure.

Hi! I know how you feel! I'm also applying for priority admission, planning to submit my application tomorrow, but I have one recommendation still on its way from overseas and I'm really worried it won't get here on time.

I'm hoping that if it doesn't arrive on time, they will move it to the regular application group. I imagine if that's not the case, we could apply again, but as it would be a new application, we'd probably have to pay the application fee again, which isn't great :/

Good luck with yours! Hoping everything arrives on time for both of us

While looking over previous years posts for the a bsn program I came across some applicants talking about an admissions review. I assume that refers to meeting with an admissions specialist after not getting in. I'm sure there is some valuable information discussed during that meeting. Does anybody have any insight or advice in reference to the application process. The MUSC website is a great source of info but I wanted to check and see if anybody else had anything to add.

Thanks.
