Hi everyone!
I'm a pre-nursing student in Charleston, SC hoping to apply for Medical University of South Carolina's Accelerated BSN program for the spring of 2017.
I'm currently completing the pre-requisites at College of Charleston, which doesn't have it's own nursing program.
I'm going to be applying with around 75 hours including the 60 hours of pre-reqs, and expect to have a GPA of about 3.8.
I'm 19, and I'm planning to apply this summer at the end of my sophomore year, but I'm worried about my chances without a previous degree and some experience working in healthcare. I'll have a good number of hospital volunteer hours, but that's it.
Is there anyone who's currently in the program right now, or has a applied before? What do you think my chances of getting in with my expected GPA and just the pre-reqs are?
Thanks!

Hi!
I'm also applying for Spring 2017 entry. I already have a BS in Business from Rutgers with a 3.3/3.4 undergrad GPA and I should have about a 3.6-3.7 in my prerequisites (still completing). I worked in sales/account management for a few years and decided it wasn't for me. I can't wait to get started!
I don't have many volunteer hours but I've been working full time for an oncologist's office at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan which has provided some great patient care experience. I'm nervous about getting in to my top choices (MUSC is one of them). I've ready through many of the forums and it's hard to tell exactly what they are looking for and why some people get accepted and others don't.
You have a great GPA and it sounds like you're from the area - from what I've heard they take preference to SC residents. Best of luck to you!
I have also read through the various threads related to the program and agree that there doesn't seem to be a clear indication of what gets people accepted/rejected.
It sounds like you've had some great work experience, and I wish you all the best with your applications and finishing up prerequisites!

Hi All! I'm applying for the Spring 2017 cohort! I'm super nervous, I'm taking the last of my pre-reqs now. I have both a Bachelors and Masters in Sociology, and have helped to design a healthcare curriculum and will be volunteering this summer in the Nutrition department of a local hospital. I'm switching careers, as the I've realized the corporate world isn't for me. I spent time in a NICU last summer, and knew immediately I needed to change my career path. I have about a 3.1 undergrad gpa and a 3.5 graduate gpa, science, I hope to have about a 3.2-3.4...I'm so nervous...

Hi all, I'm applying for spring 2017 as well! I am currently working on my LPN license, ill graduate in december. So far I have a 4.0 in my nursing classes so I'm hoping they'll take that into consideration.I have a 3.3 cumulative, around a 3.0 science, and probably a 3.3 per req (I'm waiting on another transcript before I know exact numbers).
My main concern is the essay!! and the wait time is killing me! 3 more months until applications!
Where is everyone from? Any out of staters? I'm live near Clemson, SC.

Hi, I am currently a 2nd-semester nursing student in the ABSN program at MUSC. I applied for the spring 2016 entry. I would say just from looking at your stats you have a good chance. The only other application components would be references and the short essay which shouldn't be very hard to accomplish.
I transferred from USC to MUSC without having had a degree, and I was one of the younger applicants of our cohort so I didn't have much experience (20 when I applied, 21 now). My cumulative gpa was a 3.6 and I didn't have a ton of service hours either. So all in all, I think you're in good shape. However, do note that every year is different and it really all depends on the competition in your applicant pool. With that being said, I've heard and understood that spring semester is usually easier to get into than fall! Good luck to you! :)
Hi, thank you so much for replying ! It's reassuring to hear from someone who's already in the program. My gpa is high enough to apply for priority consideration, and I've just been feeling nervous waiting for the application to open.
How much weight do you think they give to clinical/work experience when considering an application? I think I read on the website that grades are 75% of the decision, so hopefully it won't be too bad. I'm just young and haven't been in college long enough to be qualified for much else beyond volunteering, and I went to high school overseas so I didn't have a job then that I could add to my resume.
I heard from someone that they like for you to be CPR certified before applying. Do you know if that's at all legitimate? It's not like it would be difficult to do, but if I could save the $100 or so that the course would cost that's always a plus.
Thank you for your help!
That's great that you've done so well in your nursing classes! I'm really curious to see what kind of question they're going to ask for the essay too. Best of luck to you on the application and completing your LPN license!

I am also applying for the Spring 2017 class. I applied last year but was ultimately denied admission due to the fact I did not have any medical experience. My stats last year were a 3.4 cumulative, 3.25 science, and 3.8 prereq with no previous degree due to finishing up classes for my degree. My stats this year 3.42 cumulative, 3.75 science, and 3.89 prereq with my Associates in Science as well as my Associates in Arts. I also have been working full time as a medical scribe at a local hospital in Murrells Inlet, SC and will have about 6 months experience by July 1st. I will also have reference forms from some of the doctors I have worked with. I am hoping with the increase of GPAs as well as my experience and 2 new degrees that I will get in this time around! Fingers crossed!

All,
Its exciting to see the application period open. I am also applying for the for the accelerated BSN Spring 2017. I am currently finishing up my pre reqs at trident tech which is located in Charleston, SC. At time of application my GPA will be approx a 3.0. Compared to others on this board my GPA is lower, but I do have close to 8 years in a healthcare setting as an EMT. I guess time will tell. I am currently working on my essay. I wanted to see if anybody has any advice concerning the essay? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Best of luck.
