For all who think we are a bunch of money driven pigs I want to ask you how much is too much based on my pediatric practice.
How much money would it take for you to take a young couple's most prized possession for them and tell them you are going to take care of their 4 week old boy, then go put little junior into a drug induced coma for his craniotomy.
How much would it take to get you to put a child to sleep for cardiac cath that has TOF/pulmonary atresia so they can evaluate her heart before having surgery.
How much would you charge to take a child from it's sobbing mother to go do a harvest on her baby because he's brain dead.
Yes we make good money, because we earn it. Just knowing how long I'm liable for each case in working pediatrics is enough to stress you out even for giving a little propofol to a healthy child in MRI. There is the reward of money but you have to love it to keep from burning out. For the students out there don't let any of the "nay-sayers" steal your dream...many are called, few are chosen.
Hey Platon
I come from socialized medicine (Canada). What your describing is not at all the case. The service cost is set by the exact same thing as it is here, supply and demand. I didnt make less $/hr as an RN there as i do here. It was the taxes that limited my income.
As for socialized medicine. Im willing to bet it will never happen in my lifetime in the USA. Why? Americans get upset when the gas prices hit 3$, we are all up in arms when ANY increase in tax is suggested and in fact, vote for lower taxes when the rest of the political platform is crap.
Here are the economics of socialized medicine in ONE line.
Canada + Socialized Medicine = 40% income tax, 15% sales tax & Gas prices in Canada $1.16/L 1 Gallon = 3.78 Liters. So, thats 4.38/gallon.
The US isnt willing to pay for socialized medicine. Everyone wants it, but noone actually wants to pay. So no, it wont happen.
As for the drop in income. Well, there are NO CRNAs or midlevels in Canada but for NPs and they ONLY started. Oddly, the MDAs are still making over 150-300K (the same as here BTW except where MDAs work with CRNAs and their income is greater).
I have alot of friends working as travel nurses or fulltime registry nurses making well over 80K
I dont think you have your facts straight on this one.
Unfortunately for docs and CRNAs, the USA is evetnually going to switch to socialized medicine. Its really only a matter of time. When that happens, and it WILL happen, some government bureaucrat is going to say "hmmmm... CRNAs make 150k per year ,and MDAs make 250k? Wow whe could save a hell of a lot of money by capping their incomes at, say, 80k"
Say what you will about 80k being too low, but what are CRNAs going to do? Are they going to switch fields? My response to that is switch fields to WHAT? No nursing job averages better than 80k. That will force CRNAs to take the governments low bid contracts.
My understanding is that lawsuits in anesthesiology are very rare compared to other fields. MDAs dont get sued that often, I suspect hte same is true of CRNAs. Liability is much higher in other fields, such as ob/gyn and neurosurgery.
I'm on here because I've been accepted to Jefferson's Fact Program for Nursing. I'm not a racist or pulling the race card (for what?) However you make some good points. I dont know Mike well enough to insinuate that he was intentionally slighting our culture. Thats an excellent point. Its true that I may have taken what he said out of context.Heres why: I listen to a lot of talk radio in NY. It seems that middle class America is blaming the NBA and the NFL for their financially woes. These sports just happened to be dominated by minorites. Obviously one has nothing to do with the other, but it dosent stop comments like "those people" and "they're nothing but thugs" or "they get away with murder." When they say "they" I know what THEY mean. I did overreact. However, I wasnt rude, and I felt I stated my opinion in a civil manner. The bottom line is I see humanity first and as a minority I'm well aware of the social strife that still exist in today's society. I apologize for acting in such an accusatory manner. I did enjoy the debate about hockey and its decreasing popularity though. LOL

It takes a good person to admit they overreacted. Thank you. Please try to ease into the group. It also has a lot of great people. Many have been put though a lot of disrespect for their chosen specialty though. This forum has tons of information and lots of help. I'd hate for you to be ostracized at the beginning.
Now Mike, you know I cant let that angry diatribe you just spewed slide. I'm 34 not 54. Because I'm using a proxy I couldnt edit the post so I left it. I didnt plan on posting anymore until our paths extemporaneous crossed. I apologize and you're right in health care not only will I be outnumbered racially, I'll also have to adjust to being told what to do by people a decade younger than I. So an attitude adjustment is in order. Working on it.
Ah
Well we all overreact sometimes. Not like im not as guilty as anyone else :)
Good luck at jefferson, is that the Thomas Jefferson U in Philly? Whats the FACT program exactly?
Good luck! (i love hockey Im Canadian )

Hey N/P I jumped the gun too!
The issue of people younger than you giving you orders is something ive been getting used to since the day i became an RN and it seems to get worse every year (enter the young residents )
Believe me, it gets easier to get past!

Yeah its located in Philly. If you hold a degree in anything else but nursing you're eligible. What's great is its one calendar year to a BSN. Also if you have higher than a 3.1 gpa undergrad then you're exempt from those wicked GMAT, GRE requirements. Thank Goodness, I took college seriously so I'm good with that. I hear Jefferson's CRNA program is going to be great with good job placment and tuition rembursement if you work at Jeff. I have a "hook up" in the ICU. I'm a baseball die hard. No hockey, just what I hear on talk radio. Oh and I HATE the NBA..those guys are way overpaid LOL!
hehehe
Yah i pretty much think all sports is overpaid! I am a baseball fan tho! As a Canadian from the east coast my team is default the BlueJays.
Cool about that program. I have seen a couple of posts about the Thomas Jeff. CRNA program seems its quite new. In anycase i dont know about any CRNA programs which are "Bad" per se so im sure it will be a great program.
We have a similar entrance thing here in AZ for Paramedics wanting to be RNs. With some pre reqs and a 3 month bridge they can enter the last year of the RN program (its an ADN though not a degree). Wish they had that when i was a medic... aw well.
Good luck with the program. One of the things about us older folks is that we are often very motivated and determined! Go us!
hehe.
we just got off on the wrong foot, while i am a cracker (tee hee), ive never had issues with anyone. Whens the program start?

The problem with that logic is the lazy, greedy american public thinks healthcare is a RIGHT, not a privilege. They believe they are entitled to free healthcare.
If everybody believed that NBA basketball was a right, then you'd see a lot more bitching about pro athletes salaries
