When you applied for the very first time, did you already had your license? How many applications did you fill out? I have applied for so many positions since August and have not heard anything? Do you have experience in healthcare? Thanks. :confused:

The October 10th orientation will be a hospital orientation called New Beginnings. I believe you will then be told when and where to report for the Nursing orientation.

JoeNurse2b, yes, I already had my license at the time I applied. I applied for 3 positions, which is what they recommend to do online, and I got a position for a completely different floor then what I applied for. However, in this day and age, I took what ever I could get. I am a new grad so no, I did not have any experience in healthcare but I was an honors student, had an externship as well as a preceptorship in the PICU so those all looked well on my resume. When I talked to the nurse recruiter, she said that there were a lot of new openings but they have soooooo many applications that it is hard for them to reply to everyone. I think that you should network as much as you can and have someone recommend you if possible.

NurseFairy, thank you! And all that I really know is that it is a two week orientation period with the preceptorship afterwards but I was just wondering what goes on during those two weeks and how can I prepare for it. Do you work at Mount Sinai? And if so, how do you like it?

Hi nycRN89,

I work at Mt. Sinai in Queens as a per diem RN on the ICU stepdown unit. Because I'm a per diem with experience, our orientations will be totally different. I wish I could be more help to you about that.

But I will say that I really like the organization as a whole. They really seem to be extremely well run, which is not common in this geographic area as far as hospitals go!

NurseFairy, how long was your hospital orientation before you started on the unit, and when you started orientation on your home, were they flexible the scheduling so that it did not interfere with your cuurrent job. Thank you in advance.

My hospital orientation was 4 hours at the Manhattan campus then 4 hours at the Queens campus all on one day. My per diem RN orientation was 6 hours at the Queens campus. My first day on the unit is tomorrow, but yes, my nurse manager was very flexible about scheduling my days. I don't have a current job, this is my only job, but I must work around my husbands schedule (he's also an RN) so that we don't have to put my daughter into daycare.

Omg, you are lucky to get a job in Mt. Sinai as a new grad! Are you BSN?

I'm a new grad from Jersey and just got hired, but I would like to get my NY license later. And I plan to pursue my BSN online while working. Mt. Sinai is one of my ideal places to work in the city. Is it true that they will consider new grads with associates just as long as you are currently enrolled in a BSN program? Cause I figure I'm probably gonna get my NY license anyway before I actually finish my BSN program. Plus my mom has a friend at Mt. Sinai who is a NP there. I think she also has a friend who works in the Neuro ICU. You think knowing people who can recommend me will help?

thanks NurseFairy! I have heard great things about Mount Sinai and I'm hoping it all works out smoothly when I start.

aikz, yes, I graduated with my BSN and I do know for sure that Mount Sinai will not hire ASN who are not matriculated into a BSN program and who will graduate within the year (I asked my nurse manager to see if my brother who is an Associate degree nurse could also get an interview but nope..) They are looking to renew their Magnet status, that is why they prefer BSN. They also discussed how accommodating they are with people who are going back to school, scheduling their shifts around their classes so that's great. Also having those connects can be very helpful. Just ask them to speak to their managers and see if any openings are available when you do have your NY license.
