Mount Sinai ABSN Summer 2021

Published

Hi everyone,

I know there's forums for Mount Sinai's ABSN program for the last couple of cohorts, but nothing for Summer 2021. Thought I'd start this one and see if anyone else has applied for the Summer 2021 start?

What address can we send official transcript to if its a paper copy?

Hi everyone!

I am one of the students currently in the PSON ABSN from the Summer 2020 cohort!

I used allnurses when I applied to nursing school and I was able to speak to a PSON student which really helped me get an overall idea of the program. I felt that it really helped me so I am hoping to help some of you!

If anyone has any questions please let me know!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted and good luck to those who are applying! ❤️

Hi everyone! I just received my acceptance letter for the Summer 2021 cohort! I’m considering accepting the offer, but the program seems to be a bit out of my budget. Do they offer financial aid or scholarships? I see it’s roughly 43k, but in my acceptance letter it didn’t mention anything about tuition/aid

Hi Amber!
The program itself has scholarships you can apply to or you can apply for scholarships and grants from external sources to apply to your tuition. In regards to grants, there are some throughout the year you can apply to, but not a significant amount in regards to a reduction of tuition to be honest. Usually about 1-3k.

You do get federal loans through FAFSA but since it is a second degree you will not get Financial Aid that does have to be repaid (loans only). If you already have FAFSA loans, that can also impact your financial aid because you are only allotted a certain number of years (I believe 4) of federal school loans. You can contact FAFSA to get more info to confirm this.

The tuition for PSON is currently about $56,620 for our cohort. I’m going to attach a screenshot of the breakdown so it’s a bit more expensive that 40k. But unless you can go to a SUNY or CUNY it’s going to be around $50k-100k+ price range.

I hope this helps! ❤️

This helps a TON thank you so much! Do you have any advice of where to look for scholarships? Also, can you just give a general idea of what a week looks like for you in regard to classes/clinicals/days on site vs. virtual? The Summer cohort follow a Summer, fall, Spring, Summer semester plan right? Just wanted to get a vague idea when graduation would be.

I have so many questions I’m so sorry for asking a ton! Thank you for being kind enough to reach out to all of us!

Hey everyone! Got accepted into the program on Feb 11th, very excited to start in the Summer.

Anyone know if there is a facebook group created for the Summer Cohort?

Hi! Don’t be sorry! I had a ton of questions too when I started!

I can only give you advice I didn’t follow because I haven’t gotten too many scholarships ?. But! There is a good book called the “big book of scholarships” and they have a ton of different ones to apply to! My advice is to apply to as many as you can. I have a folder of “scholarship essays” I just keep reusing when I apply to them to make it easier. But the more the merrier and any amount helps!

General idea of school right now is 90% online, 10% in person for clinicals. This may change if we can wrangle the pandemic! But all of the classes are online right now and we do our tests and quizzes through a lockdown browser with recorded test taking. We are lucky to have clinicals and labs. For the first semester we got to go to lab four times and now we go to clinicals once or twice a week depending on your rotation. I find online learning very frustrating and I’m not a personal fan of it, but the clinical experience we get in the hospitals makes up for everything! It isn’t the schools fault and most of the teachers prefer teaching in person than online, it’s just the way of the world right now ?

The Summer cohort you listed is correct! So if you start May 2021, you graduate August 2022! And let me tell you it really does fly! Us in the program are set to graduate December 2nd 2021 and we started mid August 2020. There are some breaks during the whole process (usually a month to a month and a half). Take advantage! Your brain will need it.

I think I answered all of them, but if I missed a question or you have more let me know!

You’re the BEST! How much do textbooks end up being per semester?

The book themselves can run quite expensive. We use something called Lippincott coursepoint. Unfortunately with this software you can’t avoid buying the textbooks or buy another textbook secondhand to replace it because we use virtual simulations and online quizzes to do the classwork. They are quite costly and I believe it was like $750 the first semester (total) and then this current semester was about $680. So I highly suggest if you are working now to start saving so that way when the books do come up you have some thing to cushion the blow.

also if you haven’t taken any or all of the pre-requisites I highly suggest taking them before you start the program. It is going to be an additional cost at first but I promise you it will save you a lot of money at the end. For the first semester you can take pathophysiology and pharmacology alongside the rest of the courses but they are very difficult and you’d be taking 5 classes a week and having to manage all the tests (which can result in three tests a week ). The school accepts most transfer credits for those classes but if you don’t have it yet I highly recommend Portage Learning which is an online website that you can just take the class at your own pace. Those classes are about $600 each for pathophysiology, ethics, pharmacology or other. You have to have your portage certificate before the semester starts. You cannot take portage classes while you are taking classes at PSON instead of theirs, it must be done prior. I had taken both pathophysiology and nutrition online. When the semester started I saved $5000 in tuition because I didn’t have to take those classes. So at first $600 seems like a lot but you consider $5000 you really do save yourself time, effort, and money. It is really important in this program to reduce your workload as much as possible because it’s a lot of information being thrown at you at a very fast rate which is something that comes along with being in an accelerated program!

Thank you so much for sharing! How long did it take you to complete Patho on Portage learning? Would you recommend taking both Pharm and Patho or just one ?

I’m taking Patho right now. It’s a long course it’s taking me a while but I’m also working full time so I don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to it. I’ve probably been taking it for 5 months but I’m sure you can get it done sooner if you have the time to dedicate to it

Yea, the syllabus recommends about 5 months but I don't have that long LOL. I'm not working at the moment so I can dedicate a lot of time to it. How long is one module? and do you know if we have to complete them before the April 2nd deadline or before the Summer semester starts?
