Hi everyone,
I know there's forums for Mount Sinai's ABSN program for the last couple of cohorts, but nothing for Summer 2021. Thought I'd start this one and see if anyone else has applied for the Summer 2021 start?

LOL thanks a lot! I'll definitely ask

Patho took about two months but I really went through it every single day as much as I could. You have to wait two days between tests so I used that time to get through material and tried to take 1-2 tests a week.
I highly recommend taking both of them. It will save you money and sanity. It’s better to only take 3 classes the first semester so you can get your feet wet and focus on the material.

I am one of the students currently in the PSON ABSN from the Summer 2020 cohort!
I used allnurses when I applied to nursing school and I was able to speak to a PSON student which really helped me get an overall idea of the program. I felt that it really helped me so I am hoping to help some of you!
If anyone has any questions please let me know!
Congrats to everyone who has been accepted and good luck to those who are applying! ❤️
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Would you mind telling us what a typical week looks like for you in terms of classes/clinicals. What has your experience been like with the professors? Are they high quality teacher? Lastly, do you think it would be possible to balance part-time work during this program?

Hi! No problem at all!
So for the first semester if you complete all the co-reqs you only take 3 classes. There are no clinicals the first semester, we only have 4 labs to practice skills. I highly suggest finishing all pre and co-reqs pre-program it’ll save you money and time (if you have not, it’s going to be pretty impossible to work because you will have 4-5 classes). The classes are about 4-6 hours in length and you can have classes back to back. You also have a math competency exam that you will have to pass every single semester. if you fail the test, you have the opportunity to take it two more times, but if you cannot pass then you don’t continue in the program. They teach you the math first semester though so don’t worry! But if you can start learning or memorizing conversion factors and basic dose conversions (I can provide some examples if you are interested).
The professors are all really nice but all have different teaching styles. But all the teachers I feel are willing to help, some may not like the teaching style and some professors don’t like zoom to teach (students don’t like zoom either haha). I do like some teachers more than others. But I won’t exactly say who or what because I don’t want to give you an impression that a teacher is “bad” without you seeing if they suit your style of learning.
Also, just a random piece of information but for the tests: some of the teachers will review the test, but will not show you the questions that you got wrong or tell you which questions you got wrong. It is very frustrating but it is part of test integrity. I haven’t had a teacher yet that will show you your test. Most teachers if you review your test with them, they will go over basic concepts surrounding what you got wrong on the test itself.
This current semester we have 3 classes and 2 clinicals. So my current week now is 3 days class and then a Friday and a Sunday clinical (yes, there are weekend clinicals! - I prefer them ? no traffic). In about a week I will complete my first set of clinicals and then switch to a new clinical for the rest of the semester (this will likely happen for you during OB/Peds since half the semester has to be OB and the other Pediatrics).
In regards to working, I worked Full Time my first semester but I had only 3 classes because I did all of the co-requisites needed. This current semester I am only working part time. It is a little bit of a struggle because I lose out on study time however I don’t have a choice about not working. We have a lot of students in our cohort who have kids or they live on their own so they have to work. In short, if you need to work you can make it work. The program does advise against working. But if that’s not an option for you, you can manage a job, you will just need to manage your time very well and study in between. It’s overwhelming to be honest but I have been managing it okay! Gotta pay for those books and train rides haha!
To give you a better idea I’m going to write my schedule:
M- off
T- class from 9 to 3
W- off
R- Class from 9AM to 8 PM (Yupp I know— craziness)
F- clinicals 8 AM to 1 PM
Sa- off
Su- clinicals 8 AM to 4 PM
FYI: not everyone is going to have the same clinical schedule so the clinical hours would be the same but the days/times may be different.

You’re amazing! Thank you for the info.
I also wanted to ask about health insurance. Is it provided by the school?

Hi! No problem! Unfortunately, we do not get health insurance through the school ? we do have access to employee health services so they can do your physical for school if needed. You can also get any required vaccines and your flu shot through them (which is mandatory) for free as well.
