Hi everyone,
I know there's forums for Mount Sinai's ABSN program for the last couple of cohorts, but nothing for Summer 2021. Thought I'd start this one and see if anyone else has applied for the Summer 2021 start?
hey, hope everyone is doing well! I am applying for PSON but I'm a little discouraged given they really want experience and volunteer work. I don't know if anyone has gotten in with no volunteer work or medical jobs. I work as an aide for my grandmother and I'm a cs rep as well. Aiding my grandmother id say is some sort of experience since she is bedridden so I aide in everything. Has anyone been accepted in a similar situation?? My science prereqs GPA is not the best.
My stats are
Chemistry with Lab - B
Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab- B
Human Anatomy and Physiology II with Labs- B
Microbiology with Lab- B
Nutrition- A-
Human Growth and Development- A
Ethics- currently taking
General Psychology- A-
Statistics-A
Thank you!

Hi! No problem at all!So for the first semester if you complete all the co-reqs you only take 3 classes. There are no clinicals the first semester, we only have 4 labs to practice skills. I highly suggest finishing all pre and co-reqs pre-program it’ll save you money and time (if you have not, it’s going to be pretty impossible to work because you will have 4-5 classes). The classes are about 4-6 hours in length and you can have classes back to back. You also have a math competency exam that you will have to pass every single semester. if you fail the test, you have the opportunity to take it two more times, but if you cannot pass then you don’t continue in the program. They teach you the math first semester though so don’t worry! But if you can start learning or memorizing conversion factors and basic dose conversions (I can provide some examples if you are interested).
The professors are all really nice but all have different teaching styles. But all the teachers I feel are willing to help, some may not like the teaching style and some professors don’t like zoom to teach (students don’t like zoom either haha). I do like some teachers more than others. But I won’t exactly say who or what because I don’t want to give you an impression that a teacher is “bad” without you seeing if they suit your style of learning.
Also, just a random piece of information but for the tests: some of the teachers will review the test, but will not show you the questions that you got wrong or tell you which questions you got wrong. It is very frustrating but it is part of test integrity. I haven’t had a teacher yet that will show you your test. Most teachers if you review your test with them, they will go over basic concepts surrounding what you got wrong on the test itself.
This current semester we have 3 classes and 2 clinicals. So my current week now is 3 days class and then a Friday and a Sunday clinical (yes, there are weekend clinicals! - I prefer them ? no traffic). In about a week I will complete my first set of clinicals and then switch to a new clinical for the rest of the semester (this will likely happen for you during OB/Peds since half the semester has to be OB and the other Pediatrics).
In regards to working, I worked Full Time my first semester but I had only 3 classes because I did all of the co-requisites needed. This current semester I am only working part time. It is a little bit of a struggle because I lose out on study time however I don’t have a choice about not working. We have a lot of students in our cohort who have kids or they live on their own so they have to work. In short, if you need to work you can make it work. The program does advise against working. But if that’s not an option for you, you can manage a job, you will just need to manage your time very well and study in between. It’s overwhelming to be honest but I have been managing it okay! Gotta pay for those books and train rides haha!
To give you a better idea I’m going to write my schedule:
M- off
T- class from 9 to 3
W- off
R- Class from 9AM to 8 PM (Yupp I know— craziness)
F- clinicals 8 AM to 1 PM
Sa- off
Su- clinicals 8 AM to 4 PM
FYI: not everyone is going to have the same clinical schedule so the clinical hours would be the same but the days/times may be different.
Any way that you can forward me material for the math competency tests? I got accepted for Summer 2022. I am not the best at math and I want to learn conversions before going into the program. Email: [email protected]
I am taking ethics and developmental psych on portage now. I will sign up for patho and pharmacology in February and if you have any notes that’ll help me ill take that too LOL I don’t have much time before classes start. Do you think I can finish both patho and pharmacology classes in two months?
Hi Everyone, so I got my acceptance letter just yesterday and so excited. They asked to retake chem so that’s that. Is there any groups? I would love to be apart of it. I am nervous for the math competency. I can be reached at [email protected]
