Mount Saint Mary's University (ABSN Summer 2018)

Published

Hello Everyone,

I have recently applied for the MSMU's Summer 2018 ABSN Program at the Doheny Campus, and I would be delighted to know if anyone else applied!

I am scheduled to take the Math Exam on the 16th of December!

I thought this thread would be a great way to keep each other updated throughout the process. Anyone is more than welcome to share on this post--whether it'd be about the application process, experiences, and future goals!

With that in mind, I sincerely wish you all the best of luck!

Hi futurenurse2017. Congratulations! you are 2 months away.

Can you pls tell us whats the schedule like the first few months? Do you have to be in school Monday to Friday and clinicals on weekends? Thank you.

Hi all,

I am currently in the ABSN program, I graduate in May. Congratulations on your acceptance!

I was concerned with the pass rate when I applied as well but the school has made a lot of adjustments in order to get you a lot of practice with NCLEX style questions. Last we heard the ABSN pass rate was about 85%. I know this is lower than I would like, but I know that I will be doing NCLEX prep myself prior to taking the exam on top of what they provide.

The program is tough and fast paced but if you are organized and dedicated you can do it. Each cohort passes down a lot of information to help the next. My cohort started with 26 people and have 19 from the original class, so it is not something to take lightly. Each rotation is 8 weeks so you do not have time to get behind. The first semester is the hardest because you are trying to get into a pattern of everything but each rotation has its difficult moments.

If you have any questions just ask :)

I suggest the group me instead of facebook because there is going to be a lot of information thrown at you guys and a group me chat allows everyone to share info quickly and it is easy to use.

Umm let me think back that far lol.... for most semesters you will have class two days a week and clinicals either 2 or 3 days a week. The first rotation we were M-F (2 class days, 3 clinical days of 6 hours). BUT everything is always changing. We did have clinicals on weekends during certain rotation. You have to be flexible with everything. The biggest piece of advise I can give you is to roll with the punches...things are going to change often and its better to keep a positive outlook rather than fuss over something you cannot change.

We had made suggestions along the way so hopefully your year will be the best one yet :)

Thanks futurenurse.2017 for all your info! You're invited to my new group 'ABSN

I made a GroupMe and linked it below.

Summer 2018 Cohort' on GroupMe. Click here to join: GroupMe

We could always make both? Facebook to start and a groupme later? At work I use gmail, google messenger, and drive for sharing files. If everyone has a gmail or doesn't mind making one, messenger allows us to make different topics and groups that we can later search through our gmails. And drive let's us share docs that autosave as we edit, it's really helpful in working team projects.

In response to what the class schedule looks like, I'm a bit of an anxious planner, so I combined info from the info session PowerPoint and the academic calendars on MSMU and got the following, may not be 100% but I think it's close:

Graduation 5/6/2019

Hi FutureNurse.2017! Yes, congrats on almost graduating! I'm sure it's super exciting. How soon do those graduating plan on taking the NCLEX? How prepared do you feel right now to take it/pass it?

AND thank you so much for chiming in! I was asked about adversity during my interview and I now know why with you two cents.

I hope that the Summer 2018 Cohort agrees on group me or google messenger because I do not have a Facebook. I deactivated my FB almost a decade ago. Hope everyone is on board by now && hoping to hear from the rest of those accepted and planning on Summer 2018 Cohort soon :)

RNby2019! Thank you for compiling that! I am anxious, too... I keep looking at the MSMU admit website searching for updates and still frantically looking out for an email with further details about the upcoming schedule. I rather know sooner than later to have ample time to plan ahead. I spoke to the Admissions department and they notified me that we should expect an email at the end of March, which is so far away, but is understandable since the second wave of acceptances should have their deposits in by then.

It definitely puts everything into perspective because I was thinking that's such a short list... but the reality of the matter is that it will be a short list with it being a one year accelerated program. I look forward to working with you! Again, thank you for compiling that :D

I made a GroupMe and posted the link here but it won't post until allnurses checks it for spam. And thank you rnby2019 for the schedule! Helps to see it all together.

@RNby2019 That is an incredible combination of our future schedule. Definitely helpful and something to reference for now. I received my official letter in the mail today so now I can finally say I'm accepted too! Now waiting for more info on when to retake the math test and books we'll need to purchase.

These next few weeks are going to fly!!

I received my letter in the mail also so now I officially feel accepted to the program! Can't believe we're starting in 2 months and excited to meet all of you! :)

Is anyone planning on moving to LA or commuting from nearby cities? I am trying to figure out how far to commute without dying in LA traffic haha.

Hi RNby2019!

Just so you know, holidays are not guaranteed. I started last may and we had no holidays off except thanksgiving Thursday & Friday (I had clinical Saturday) & We had 3 weeks off for Christmas and maybe July 4th (I don't remember). We did not get any breaks or other holidays...the campus is closed yes but you will be here :)

Our class will be taking NCLEX between July- August most likely. The timing depends on the BRN...you will learn all about this through the program. I know that I still have a lot of review to do but yes I feel prepared in what I need to do to be ready by the time I take the test.

We did a group me for fast communication and a class google drive to share information. If you do not have a google account/ google drive...make one. We used this often for group collaboration.

Glad I can help...I wish someone had prepared me more :)

@FutureNurse.2017 thank you so much for all your help! This really gives us an outlook of how the program is going to be.

Can I ask where most the clinical rotations are? Are they mostly in LA county? And how far is your commute to the school and hospitals? I would like an idea of where to move to since I should be figuring this out ASAP!
