Most RN's first borns?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everybody,

I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.

So, how many first borns are out there?

first born, no etoh

hmm.. I am first born daughter of an alcoholic father!

He is recovered now though.

I am also the caregiver of everyone.. I am the one saying.. don't eat that, don't smoke that.. don't do that.

First born female but second born in the family. My older brother is a doctor (does that count?) but my father never drank. So that blows that theory.

Just to add to the statistics, my mother, also a nurse was the second born daughter of a father that did drink, but I don't think was an alcoholic and my first born child, a daught of twin girls is a nurse and her father never drank either...

Specializes in Abdominal Transplant.

First born of twins with alcoholic father. I also have an aunt (last of 10 kids, though) going to nursing school, and her father was also an alcoholic. But she had kids with an alcoholic, so I suppose the same caregiver aspect aplies. Actually, I have a cousin who is first born of two alcoholics (poor girl) also going to school for nursing. Interesting theory.. It makes sense on different levels. First, as already mentioned, the caregiver aspect. But also the fact that alcoholics tend to not have money (for their families, anyway), so it's economic to go for an in demand, well paying, but also short program like an ASN. It applies to me, at any rate. :twocents:

1st born.

NO alcoholic relatives what so ever.

First born, alcoholic father. So I guess I fit.

Specializes in LTC/Rehab, Med Surg, Home Care.

Sorry, I'm the baby of the family :-) Mother was the youngest daughter, large age gap between her and youngest brother, father was the youngest, but sibling died before he was born so he was an only child
