I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.

first born and daughter and dysfunctional family growing up :) yes father was alcoholic and mom was deathly ill and died young. one never knows - interesting opinion lol.
Hi KristyBRN and everyone. Wanted you to know your friend was right on the money. I am a first born RN and my father was an alcoholic, also my best friend is also a first born RN whose father was an alcoholic. So there may be some truth in that stuff. My son is also a third born RN, he just followed mothers footsteps. thanks holtgirl;)
2nd born but 1st female but i might as well be considered as the first born in the family..our firstborn drinks a looot, did not even finish school, no job, with 2 kids but no wife..in other words, no sense of responsibility...my 2 younger sibs are nurses too..my parents are not alcoholics..they're not even social drinkers....

If I recall they stated nursing was a thankless job...and their was some need by the person to have validation of their worth in their lives. I don't know about that-but I feel pretty good when I get home. Recently had this discussion with a few younger girls at work and two of three I spoke with fit the criteria.

Yup, 1st born, dysfunctional family. Mother died when I was 14 and I've been a caregive since I was 9. Father not alcoholic, but unavailable emotionally.
