More attractive grads have better chances of getting hired?

Published

online there's this study that claims more attractive/pretty people are more likely to get hired for jobs and are generally more well liked and treated better. does anyone believe this is true? anybody works in the hr department know of any sitautions where nurses got hired because they were pretty/had a symmetrical face?

i've never been impressed by good looks...never.

rather, i'd be more inclined to respond well to a dorky, desperate salesperson...

all my life, i've tended to side with the underdog in life.

gawd, people are shallow, yes?

Yeah- I'm a sucker for an underdog as well.... The superficially pretty are fortunate, and some have the inner beauty to keep up with the 'shell'... but too much emphasis is put on things that just don't matter :)

Funny. I just bought a car this week. The finance guy was not attractive, but more like a John Candy type of guy-real nice, kinda funny. Didn't see one attractive female in the whole place but I understand your example. It's everywhere! :)

The husbands been in the automobile world for 14 years. It's all I have ever seen at all the dealerships we have been in. RV, Cars and I have talked to a few GM's and they said that is what they do on purpose. Not 100% but I would say it's been about what I have seen 95% of the time in the past 14 years.

Ha ha! I am really enjoying the funny and light hearted tone of this thread. I can tell you that Northwestern and Illinois Masonic have some of the hottest nurses. They are dim witted underpaid waitresses.I had to take the BKAT for my current job. It made the NCLEX seem like cake. Next time ill send them a photo

Off-topic here, but...

Dude, is there a single facility in Chicago that has nurses you respect? Geez, you rag on all of 'em.

It's not just nursing though. Some employers are biased towards certain names. There have been studies showing that "upper class" names on resumes help you get pushed through to interviews.

Im thinking about adding Esquire to the end of my name. :uhoh3::lol2:

I'm with you Leslie...I'm more interested in what's on the inside of a person, rather than the outer shell and I give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Salespeople, nurses, docs, etc...ALL people, eventually show you who they really are, despite their looks.

Yep, I can believe it, although I think it's sad really!

What is good looking to some is not attractive others.
*cha-ching!*

Money statement right there! :yeah:

Besides, if you're shallow enough to judge me by my 'superficial charecteristics' - you're the loser, not me. For I can guarantee that you've never met anyone like me... and you never shall.

Also - if I'm being selected for what I seem to be than what I am, do I really want to work there? What are the chances that my co-workers were also selected the same way?

Not saying that people can't be attractive AND smart [like me! ;)]. Just sayin' that it's not the whole picture :)

Not necessarily true:

Over the years, a series of studies have tried to measure how people perceive different names. Typically, a researcher would send two identical (and fake) résumés, one with a traditionally white name and the other with an immigrant or minority-sounding name, to potential employers. The "white" résumés have always gleaned more job interviews. Such studies are tantalizing but severely limited, since they offer no real-world follow-up or analysis beyond the résumé stunt.

The data show that, on average, a person with a distinctively black name--whether it is a woman named Imani or a man named DeShawn--does have a worse life outcome than a woman named Molly or a man named Jake. But it isn't the fault of his or her name. If two black boys, Jake Williams and DeShawn Williams, are born in the same neighborhood and into the same familial and economic circumstances, they would likely have similar life outcomes. But the kind of parents who name their son Jake don't tend to live in the same neighborhoods or share economic circumstances with the kind of parents who name their son DeShawn. And that's why, on average, a boy named Jake will tend to earn more money and get more education than a boy named DeShawn. DeShawn's name is an indicator--but not a cause--of his life path.

I think good looks get one only so far. Yes they open doors but then you have to have skills, personality and an ability to communicate. Being female and attractive while having perks has an equal disadvantage, you have to work harder to prove yourself and be taken seriously.
