Montefiore School of Nursing Fall 2015/Kaplan Exam

Published

There doesn't seem to be anyone else on AN who is applying to MSON for the fall term but I'll update just in case anyone else is searching (fruitlessly) for some info. I took the Kaplan Admissions Test/Entrance Exam/KAT Test on Friday so I'm just going to share some info and advice that will hopefully be helpful to whoever comes across it, not just those applying to Montefiore. If you are applying to Montefiore School of Nursing it works like this:

1. You send in all of your application materials along with a $40 money order. You will receive a checklist of any missing application materials about a week later if there is anything missing from your file.

2.If you meet the requirements they send you an invitation to take the KAT test. The invitation I got was by email, they may have sent something by mail but I haven't checked. The invitation comes with a list of dates and times of which you will pick three ordered from your first to third choice. They will confirm with you which date and time you are scheduled for. I got my first choice which was Friday April 24th.

3.In the invitation email you will have received attachments with the suggested study guide, which is Kaplan's guide for Nursing School Entrance Exams. I did not purchase it and it seems that a majority of those who did found it to be useless. See below for info on the test which I got a composite score of 85 on. The school will begin sending out decision letters on May 11th.

The test consisted of 91 questions total for a total of 165 minutes.

There are 4 sections:

Reading-22 questions/45 minutes

Math-21 questions/45 minutes

Writing-21 questions/45 minutes

Science-20 questions/30 minutes

I took my test on a computer using sign in info provided by the proctor. There is a calculator button that you can press if you need a calc. You can go back to previous questions within a section but not back to previous sections. I was the first to finsih, I'd say it took me about an hour to finish and I got my results immediately and will be receiving a copy in the mail.

I only studied for the science section because it's agreed that it's the most difficult. I studied using Khan Academy because it consisted only of A&P questions. I studied every system that my invitation letter said would be included. That did NOT help. I honestly don't think that there is any real way to study for most of the questions that are on this test's science question apart from those on the cardiovascular system. I got 90s in every section except for the science section, go figure, I got a 60 there. Dismal, I know. I honestly cannot offer any advice as to how to study for this part of the exam because of the nature of the questions.

Good morning Ldy76,

Can you tell me how it feels to be heading to N3?

Hey Harrob48, aren't u a MSON student?

Keep hope alive according to their online GPA calc my prereq GPA is a 3.0 and I have a c- in micro so it's not a definite yes for me either. We just have to hope for the best

Your C- in micro will not matter as long as your overall GPA is still above the minimum. You would just have to retake the course. I have been accepted to MSON for the fall but I may not be accepting the seat because I was also accepted at CNR. I saw that you will be earning your bachelor's degree, congrats on that!!! You may want to look into second degree nursing programs like at CNR. Once you have a bachelor's degree in another area, they have a special "accelerated" program for you to apply to. I have a friend who is in it so maybe you should explore that option.

Hi. Everything that u need to purchase for nsg1 will come w ur admissions packet.

When you order your uniform the scrub top and the scrub jacket will have the school patch. You can buy any ciel blue scrub pants you like.

Hey do you know if we can use older edition books...

Hi rudybrklyn!

congrats on your acceptance! I just finished N1. I would highly suggest not buying older editions of any nursing books. Although the information is practically the same, a lot of students struggled in my class that had older editions. For example, some students had older dosage calculations textbooks and were unable to follow homeworks and classworks. Also, you will need codes that are on each textbook on the inside cover. You will need all of these books for all four semesters so it is definitely worth the investment.

The he books we used for Nursing one were:

taylors fundamentas of nursing eighth edition

dosage calculation by grey

medical surgical nursing by brunner and suddarth 13th edition

fundamentals of nursing lab companion by Lynn

Thank you soo much how did you find N1 any pointers? Tips? 1 down 3 to go :)

Hi All!

I know this thread is a bit old now but congrats to everyone who is staring in the fall! I just graduated from monte and would be more than happy to answer any questions! I know there isn't much info out there regarding the school. It is a great school and I can honestly say I was completely prepared not only for the NCLEX but for my first job! Good luck and study hard!

Hi RN.J,

Any advice for nsg 3 & 4 students currently in Monte?

Tough question haha! When I went through there were problems with the N3 and N4 instructors Halfway through N4 our instructor left, and the N3 instructor took a "leave of absence" (which I think resulted in her actually leaving altogether) leaving the dean and N2 instructor to teach the remainder of those classes. As far as my experience went for 3, I taught myself most of the material- but I learned A LOT. N4 was difficult because the instructor was not very intentional with her exams and seemed to be pulling questions out of no where. That being said though the material for 4 was not very challenging and they added a leadership component as well that was a grade booster.

Even if the instructors did not end up changing, you have all the study skills and dedication to get though the last two semesters after getting through N2 haha.

Most importantly, now is the time to start networking at clinical. I noticed that a simple pop into the unit managers office of the assigned unit or pullout to say thank you won huge brownie points and started conversations about where I wanted to work and so forth!

Good luck! you will be graduating in no time!
