Montefiore School of Nursing Fall 2015/Kaplan Exam

Published

There doesn't seem to be anyone else on AN who is applying to MSON for the fall term but I'll update just in case anyone else is searching (fruitlessly) for some info. I took the Kaplan Admissions Test/Entrance Exam/KAT Test on Friday so I'm just going to share some info and advice that will hopefully be helpful to whoever comes across it, not just those applying to Montefiore. If you are applying to Montefiore School of Nursing it works like this:

1. You send in all of your application materials along with a $40 money order. You will receive a checklist of any missing application materials about a week later if there is anything missing from your file.

2.If you meet the requirements they send you an invitation to take the KAT test. The invitation I got was by email, they may have sent something by mail but I haven't checked. The invitation comes with a list of dates and times of which you will pick three ordered from your first to third choice. They will confirm with you which date and time you are scheduled for. I got my first choice which was Friday April 24th.

3.In the invitation email you will have received attachments with the suggested study guide, which is Kaplan's guide for Nursing School Entrance Exams. I did not purchase it and it seems that a majority of those who did found it to be useless. See below for info on the test which I got a composite score of 85 on. The school will begin sending out decision letters on May 11th.

The test consisted of 91 questions total for a total of 165 minutes.

There are 4 sections:

Reading-22 questions/45 minutes

Math-21 questions/45 minutes

Writing-21 questions/45 minutes

Science-20 questions/30 minutes

I took my test on a computer using sign in info provided by the proctor. There is a calculator button that you can press if you need a calc. You can go back to previous questions within a section but not back to previous sections. I was the first to finsih, I'd say it took me about an hour to finish and I got my results immediately and will be receiving a copy in the mail.

I only studied for the science section because it's agreed that it's the most difficult. I studied using Khan Academy because it consisted only of A&P questions. I studied every system that my invitation letter said would be included. That did NOT help. I honestly don't think that there is any real way to study for most of the questions that are on this test's science question apart from those on the cardiovascular system. I got 90s in every section except for the science section, go figure, I got a 60 there. Dismal, I know. I honestly cannot offer any advice as to how to study for this part of the exam because of the nature of the questions.

Congrats! I took the teas but what I can tell you is to make sure you take a&p 1 and 2 before you start nursing 1! Nursing school is another world of thinking! Best of luck and study study study!!!! Also make sure to get A's and B's in your pre reqs!

thank you!!! did you go to montefiore nursing ?

Yes I'm currently in nursing 2!

I am a Nursing 1 student and I love it! The program is hard like any other nursing program and you have to get used to the exam style and just the experience as a whole. Getting in seemed like an insurmountable challenge but now that I'm in I realize that making it through will be the real

test. It's so worth it though. I wish you the best and I hope you rock

it when you get in

good luck!! you'll do great!! i really hope i get in!!!

Hi all,

So i have been reading through all the posts and I am so nervous. My test date is October 30, 2015. I am currently an LPN at Montefiore taking A&P2 with lab and Chemistry, I have most of my pre reqs and a GPA of 3.79. My brain is about to explode. I feel the most pressure because I was told that MSON takes the top 35. I have been studying the Kaplan book but I am kind of worried because of the posts I have read. Congrats to all that have gotten in. Wish me luck.

Good Luck!!!! I feel the same way but at least you have a bit of a nursing background so I'm sure you'll do great!! I have my test this Friday and I am freaking out also. I am taking A&P1 now my professor is absolutely horrible so I have been stressing that as well. I am a complete mess lol hope we both get in and start in Jan!! =)

Thank you nicolep303, that means a lot. Well according to these posts Kahn Academy has been helpful. I registered and it is quite helpful. You will do just fine. Yes hopefully we will be able to start in Jan. Strive for a 75 and better and you will be ok.

Hi guys,

I'm scheduled to take the Kat this Saturday and I'm lost on what to prepare for, I understand we got the outline but I'm so nervous

I can tell you that you definitely need to know your basic A&P extremely well. Know the system functions and the functions of specific parts. Math is well..math so is writing and comprehension...either you have a grasp of grammar and spelling or you don't. I focused on science...it was the only thing o studied for. I had one of if not the highest KAT scores for my cohort with scores in the 90s in every section except science which was a 60 because it's just hard and some questions were actual nursing material.

Thank you. I've went back to all my A&P material it is so much to cover with only 30 questions on the exam is what has me nervous. Far as math did you find it difficult?

No it was just the same old stuff you find on standardized tests: algebra, trig, word problems. The only thing I was worried about was science and it is just plain hard.
