MNA and Nurses Respond to the Killing of George Floyd by Police

As a nurse, what is your first reaction as you hear those words?

Updated:

We have all seen on the news the terrible scene that played out in the streets in Minnesota when George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black male, was arrested by the Minnesota Police for attempted forgery at a convenience store. The action was caught on video as George Floyd, handcuffed and pinned to the ground face down by an officer who pressed with his full weight with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. We watched and heard George Floyd crying out that he couldn't breathe. We heard him calling for "Mama". We watched as his body went limp with the officer still holding him down. This will be a scene I shall never forget.

The following are quotes from the Minnesota Nurses Association's response to this heinous crime.

Quote

As nurses, we see the horrific effects of racism in our hospitals and community every day. We cannot remain silent as yet another black man has died at the hands of police...

Quote

George Floyd's last words were "I can't breathe.” George Floyd died shortly after arriving at the hospital."

Nurses jump into action when they hear someone say "I can't breathe", instead of standing there watching them die. Their goal is to save lives, not kill people

Quote

In the case of George Floyd, Minneapolis Police took no care or life-saving measures. Instead, they left him pinned down to the ground until paramedics arrived. Police ignored the pleas of George Floyd and he died.

Nurses care for all patients, regardless of their gender, race, religion or other status. We expect the same from the police. Unfortunately, nurses continue to see the devastating effects of systematic racism and oppression targeting people of color in our communities. We demand justice for George Floyd and a stop to the unnecessary death of black men at the hands of those who should protect them.

As a nurse, or as a compassionate human, how has this horrific event affected you? We have seen protests (some peaceful and some that have erupted into riots), vandalism, looting, and more. What is going on in your community? What actions can nurses take?

Let us stand together and let our voices be heard. Post your comments below.

You are determined to make people racist. YOU are causing it by insisting that everyone is racist and they are not! It is a small minority- at least in the white population. Blacks seem a whole lot more racist than whites, with all their special organizations and finger pointing and rioting.  All this hostility serves to do is make people dislike you. Just be a nurse! What are you trying to achieve here? Why so much hate? If you come at the world with hate, the world will hate you back.

LOL

What a ridiculous concept.

Apparently, I've gone and made people racists.

If white supremacy isn't a problem why do the FBI and DHS think that is is a problem?

Yes! It is! And these are supposed to be professional people! Just wow.

Do you think that is professional to say "Blacks seem a whole lot more racist than whites, with all their special organizations and finger pointing and rioting."

Doesn't that seem like a racially biased point of view?

Any organization that is exclusive by race is racist.

You are a bully and a troll. Bye now.

Can you more specifically define "small minority"?

How is the existence of "special organizations" racist?  What "finger pointing" are you referring to?

Please. Just stop. Any organization based on race alone is racist. Finger pointing is accusing the whole of the other-than-black world as being racist against blacks. Can you specifically define the number of people who are racist? My only knowledge is in the numbers of people that I have met in my lifetime. And extrapolating from that I would say maybe 10%- a small minority- my sample size -might be considered racist not in action but in attitude. So stop poking me with a pin. I did not start this fire. I know it is fashionable to harass others online now. But please leave me out of it.

I'm not sure it's reasonable to insert yourself into a conversation, stir the pot, and they say "but please leave me out of it".

Racism is seeing a person or group of people as inferior based solely on their race.  Groups that promote the idea that nobody is inferior based solely on their race is by definition, not racist.  I certainly don't argue that there are people who associate with these groups hold biases against others based on race, including blacks who are biased against whites, but I'm not clear what organizations you are claiming hold these views as part of their organizations platform.

I don't agree that if 10% of the population is racist that it's a minor problem.  The proportion of the population that are pedophiles is well under 1%, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be a major concern.  It's a significant problem if 1 out 10 police officers see other races as being inferior, same if it's 1/10 employers, teachers, doctors, nurses, etc.

As an example, lethal force was used appropriately in the recent case of Ma'Khia Bryant, she was actively stabbing people and showed no signs of stopping when confronted by officers threatening lethal force, the next appropriate step is lethal force.

True, but that hasn't stopped the Dem liberal MSM from blaming the cop

What policies are those?

This argument seems like saying it's hospitals that cause illness and disease, I mean hospitals are full of sick people after all.

You are so right. I wish there was a way to just delete our posts if we want to withdraw from heated debates. I promised I would stay out of this. It made me want to leave this site completely. But I got those updates in the email and got drawn in. I was wrong. I got angry. I said things I should not have. I did learn you can block people. Had I only known that before I would not have made such a fool of myself. I truly would like to just delete every post on this topic and go back to my happy allnurses life. Words are like bullets, once they hit their mark you cannot put them back in the gun. But if any moderator wants to go through and delete everything I said, feel free. This is not what I signed up for this site for. I just wanted to share with other nurses.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. There are people on here who are totally full of bologna who enjoy gaslighting. We all say things we regret at times bc we are all human. (And if people don't then I guess they are not human LOL). Please do continue to share your many years of experience with other nurses, I know they appreciate it!
